What a milestone weekend for Busselton Junior Squash at the Squash WA State Junior Titles! After competing in the individuals event Saturday/Sunday 5 of our kids were selected to represent the “Country Zone” In the teams event.
Leo, Lucy & Oscar would all compete alongside one another in the under 11s category. Along with Eleanor Jones they had a narrow win Saturday morning against the North Zone. A narrow loss against the South zone later that day, followed by a narrow loss to the Central zone Sunday morning who would go on to win the division! 2nd 🥈 place for our kids in their very first state title team event!
17 year old Morgan Baxter only returned to the club 10 days ago after a 4 year hiatus! What better way to get moving again but to enter a 4 day state title run 😂. Incredibly Morgan would go on to win a couple of matches and take some games off others who had no idea where he came from or what was going to come next! Welcome back Morgan!
The special shoutout is last but not least to 11 year old Evie Callegari! Prior to Monday Evie was a spectator for her younger brother Oscar! But when the central zone needed an under 13 girl last minute she jumped in! Evie improved throughout the weekend and has now caught the squash bug! Thanks to Lisa Christou and the team for making her feel welcome!

South West Masters 2024!
A huge thankyou to all players and spectators for supporting this event and making it such a wonderful weekend. 💙
Amazing Busselton success with three divisions taken out over the weekend plus a local member in Div 1.
60 Players from the southwest and Perth competed in the 38th SW Squash Masters, in Busselton at the Sebel Resort’s 2 courts, which started Fri afternoon thru to Sunday. It was wonderful to have 20 new players in the tournament plus many long serving players. The Tournament was played in 3 Divisions with ages from 35 to early 80s This is the biggest master’s Squash event outside of Perth and one of the longest running. Busselton had 16 players over all 5 divisions all on a round robin basis. This competition started in Busselton in 1987 with only 25 players.
The coveted Div 1 shield went to a count back after 2 teams ended up with equal games and had to be separated by points, after no team went though the weekend undefeated. It was taken out by team,” Top Guns” which included a Busselton player Dave Windsor along with Perth top level players Greg Laurence and David Beattie with 2nd going to team “Stacked” made up of Courtney Diggins , Sam Wendt and Leon Holmes. Many of the Div 1 matches were of extremely high standards, long rallies, superb vollies, amazing power and incredible touch and at times what seemed impossible retrievals to keep the rallies going. When the 2 teams played each other in the last match of the weekend the result was a very close 5 games to 4 with Greg defeating Courtney 3/0 in the last match of the tournament, in a thoroughly entertaining match which had the huge crowd amazed at their magnificent racket skills.
Division 2 was taken out by the undefeated Busselton team “Busso Badgers” made up of Ryan Callegari, Warren Oliver, and Dave Nelson with both Ryan and Dave going thru the tournament undefeated, in fact Ryan only lost 1 game for the whole weekend. 2nd place went to Team “Gys, Greg,Wes” with Gys also from Busselton .
Div 3 was won by team “Busso on the Hunt” made up of local players Jane Hunt, Emma Handreck, and Christine Harris, and 2nd position going to team “the Price is Right” made up of Perth players Bob Price and Prue O’Neil along with Katanning’s Jim Hine. Both Jane and Emma went thru undefeated.
Div 4 was taken out by Busso Scroungers made up of locals Rowan Anderson, Matt Suriani and Kelly Ferguson with both the team and every player going thru the weekend undefeated and scored 8 points more than 2nd placed 3peat the defending champs from Perth made up of Pat Barker, Nikki McCullough and Di Cook.
Div 5 was won by the Perth Team L*D with team members Louise Jamieson, Sally Perren and Deb Shahar who completed and were undefeated during the tournament. 2nd place was taken by “No Time to be Reston” made up of Kater Martin, Christine Reston and Linda McBrierty.
Sat night saw 53 people socialise at Tonic by the Bay in which we recognised 13 players who have entered the tournament 10 or more times, with Warren Oliver, Linda McBrierty, Chris Champ, George Reid, Bob Price, Prue O’neil, Ed Jennings and Kelvin Carmichael all having played more than 20 times since the tournament started back in 1987. Over the past 35 years 610 players have played at least once in the tournament.
Thank you to our sponsors Tonic by the Bay, Sebel Resort, Hillzeez, Summer Star Tourist Parks, Retravision, Sportspower, Busselton Discount Drug Store, Moon Haven, The Parlour Hair Company, Vasse Lawns
