I’d frame this if I could!… accidental art😊.. and a bunch of “custom bronze and brass doggies and a possible partial explanation for the demise of the Thylacine?..
Casting those little bees for my bee rings!😊.. They’re a custom brass…
I love the cheerfulness in the colour!👀 (it has a little silver in it to lighten and brighten 😏)..😄 Bee-Bop-a-Lula❗️
I call it Conjouring .. because, from mind stuff, earth, water, fire and air..and by waving my hands about..(a fair bit), this little Tassie Tiger brooch came into existence 😊 … (I teach this sorcery!.. see my website for details. brucepringle.com)
When I woke up this morning.. none of these existed…
The bronze Phoenix pendant is unsigned..(no makers mark) .. because it’s an impression, taken from the stopper of my favourite Whiskey.. It’s not for sale but I reckon the distillery owes me at least that😀

Time is a river flowing through us as we stand still in wonder.. and here we are still, a little collective, thriving in the same spot since 1995..
Ideas have the power to transform lives and culture by collegiality… Under the umbrella of the Salamanca Arts Centre, like the works of our hands, we endure! Visit our Lightbox Exhibition, on the street, beside the entrance to that fabulous institution, our home of the last 29 years, the Hobart Salamanca arts centre.
HAMMERED, PIERCED, BENT & PICKLED : 29 YEARS OF HAMMER AND HAND | MAR 20 - APR 28 | LIGHTBOX
A peek at the many ways metal can be transformed when clever hands are let loose with hammers (and other tools).
Hammer and Hand is an icon of Salamanca; a metal worker's collective which has been supporting emerging jewellers and blacksmiths, many straight from art school or TAFE, since its conception in 1995. Having seen 50 or so members over the years, it continues to be a crucible of intriguing, beautifully conceived and constructed, locally hand made objects, to wear, use or simply enjoy in your space.

This is “ grrRALPH‼️” …He wonders if he’ll ever find out “Who’s a good boy then?”… He’s a bit of a mongrel really, ‘cause I mistakenly added a BIG lump of silver to the bronze alloy I was melting for the sand casting..🙄 Give your jacket a little attitude this winter!
!
❗️HERE BE WONDERS❗️ Sparkling gems from far off lands, set in metals precious and sought..Emissaries from ancient and brighter times, frozen in molten bronze. Creatures of the fire, ember sprites and shaman dancers, riders of the wild beasts, wilder than their steeds..all wrought from elemental matter and gossamer dreams .. the bewildering stories from futures past.. mind stuff made manifest, to tease the memory and make whole the soul.
Treat yourselves to mystery revealed. Step inside Hammer and Hand and find the real thing.

“LAMENT” I am Exhibiting this new series of 6 small bronze sculptures over the long weekend, 26th, 27th and 28th January, in the Hammer&Hand Metal Collective Studio Gallery, 10 Station St Bangalow, NSW, between 9.30 am and 3.30pm .. .. before they go to the Hobart, lutruwita /Tasmania Hammer&Hand Gallery in the Salamanca Arts Centre. These pieces are a response to the lack of lamentation in the general global population, to the probable imminent demise of our civilisation, from the effects of global warming and the venal lack of the political will to act, by those in power and those with the platform and reach to do so, to raise the alarm. Also a sad inditement of the Fifth Estate and their culpable bosses.
Visit Hammer&Hand, if you can and take a look at them .. this weekend, here in the Northern Rivers.
LAMENT bronze hight 70mm hardwood plinth.

So !…
Why metal ?! ….
This strange clay, capable of spanning great rivers and sewing the finest silk… This clay that underpins our civilisation, promotes and undermines our nobility. Makes possible our Cyber-transcendence and wreaks destruction on our natural world. This crucible of greed and benefactor of science !?
What is it ?
Beautiful and noble ! Silver and Gold ! So hard wrest and punishingly earned! Cunningly transformative of moral and ethic! Queen and King of metals, soft and pure, radiant and worshipped….
And Copper ! Princess royal ! Alloyed to art. Electric spirit of communication !
Generator of energy !
Then Iron !
This Prince of Metals. Fierce and vastly powerful, the means “by which all modern civilisation stands. This long age of iron….this as yet unfinished business… and the Blacksmith ? That Alchemist ! ?
“ By whose HAMMER AND HAND all arts do stand” ?
Who makes the tools for all Arts to flourish and all Wars to propagate.
Tool-maker ! Signal to the human cause.
So this all… the legacy that brings Me to Art ?
Where I gently attempt to describe myself to me,
tongue in cheek, rather than clenched of jaw ?
Where I make sense of the senseless and selfless the self ?
Where meaning is wrought from elemental clay to make feet for
The flood.
A Buddhist view, the plight of the Thylacine, the art of the ancients, the human condition, conceptual identity, Facebook, Google, connectivity, the transience of everything and Tea ! These are what inform my work.
I am beholden to Metal, it is my music and my sustenance. I describe the world with it and in return it has offered me an identity. I am a Metal-smith for this short and incandescent life and then I will leave it and this wrought self, happily transforming to subtler muse.

Miniature Bronzes..Sculptures.. (about 115mm heigh)
WITNESS I’m making a start on a new series of works around the theme, Witness.. This, the first, is a silver brooch..two headed, Woman and Man, Human and animal, Impartial.. and looking forward and backward. The master made in copper, formed and fabricated and wax-filled.. then cast in greensand.
Tassie Devil.. A sad story-pin.. Spare a thought for these feisty little critters… They’ve had a hard time of it over the last nearly forty years.. Scientists and conservationists have worked tirelessly to find a vaccine for Devil Facial Tumour Disease and to preserve their population by breeding in captivity and rewilding to safer environments.. Such tough little creatures yet so vulnerable.
Somewhere deep in the impenetrable bush, in steep valleys, obscured by mists, it is my hope that a few surviving Thylacine dwell and raise their young..
A recurring theme in my reasoned imagination, is the idea that quantum like superposition exists and a hand that holds is also one that releases. This Story Pin is about the colonial hand.. wielding the axe.. might also, in the present time, hide and obscure the whereabouts of the Tassie Tiger… jumbo-jumbo, sure.. but maybe?..
The fabricated silver brooches that I made years ago, speak to the effect of the indigenous hand and the colonial, on our custodianship of our environment.
Silver and bronze with a stainless steel pin.
This Story-pin is about bushfires, loss, the tragedy of so many native creatures killed, trauma, and resilience. The little house my children were born in , in the ‘80s was lost to the 2019 bushfires on the mid-north coast of NSW, that ravaged so many Australian communities that summer. Be safe, everyone.
