The tropical garden at Cairns City Backpackers is never short of a splash of colour. We'd love you to come and enjoy it.
Sorry to farewell Dominic and Emma, who have returned to England after making Cairns City Backpackers their home at various times in 2020, 2021 and 2022. They arrived in Australia just as Covid hit in 2020, but it didn’t spoil their stay Downunder. They fell in love with Cairns and hope to return in the future and Dom decided Fitzroy Island was the perfect place to propose to his future wife.
Four months ago, this lovely young couple from Bundaberg rocked up at Cairns City Backpackers as part of their trip around Australia. Bri and Lachie joined our small team of helpers, which also includes retired builder and painter Bob, and were an absolute pleasure to have here. This week we farewelled them as they head for the Northern Territory. If you are happy to work in exchange for accommodation, contact Roz or Marco at the hostel on (07) 4051 6160.
This was by the far the nicest hostel we have stayed in. It felt like a nice family holiday house. We will be back again in the future. Hopefully next year when it's cooler. Thank you for a great and comfortable stay. Highly recommend it for couples and families passing through. – S.G.
Normally there are around 150,000 working holidaymakers in Australia at any one time, according to Backpacker and Youth Tourism Advisory Panel committee member Silke Kerwick.
"We're currently down to 38,000." The Youth Hostel Association, which operated 70 properties across Australia at the start of the pandemic, says that has now dropped to 55. At Cairns City Backpackers, we are open for business and happy to once again hear the chatter of international backpackers who have arrived recently from Western Australia, New South Wales, Tasmania, the Northern Territory, south east Queensland, Victoria (before the lockdown) and New Zealand. They include travellers from Vanuatu, Ireland, Chile, Argentina, UK, USA, Belgium, France, Brazil, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Zimbabwe, Germany, China, Canada, Netherlands, Malaysia, Colombia, Japan, Pakistan, Singapore, Lithuania, Poland and India. We also have a lot of Aussies taking advantage of the warmer weather in Far North Queensland and right now, there is no better place to be.

We recently farewelled a member of our hostel team, Navod, from Sri Lanka. Marooned during COVID-19, he took refuge at Cairns City Backpackers and also visited Mission Beach. After a road trip to Melbourne, he is now safely back in Sri Lanka.
Research reveals the Far North tops the list of holiday spots in autumn and winter, replacing overseas destinations. And you don’t have to go far to find a chilled Balinese-style hostel with lovely gardens, a pool and free parking only 500m from Cairns Central . . . Cairns City Backpackers.
Canadian chef Dave and Indonesian adventurer Rammy arrived at our hostel after five months at Musgrave Station in Cape York. We were lucky to have them join our cleaning and night watch crew before setting off on a new adventure — living on an island in the Whitsundays. Their parting gift was pancakes with lashings of whipped cream, tropical fruit and Canadian maple syrup. Thanks guys.
A team effort today as Marco, Rosalind and Pascale removed decades of dirt and grime from the purple passage at Cairns City Backpackers in preparation for painting. Previous colour schemes were revealed and it seems someone forgot to paint behind the front door. Perhaps they ran out of paint. Soon to be replaced by a light colour that will be easier on the eye.
Happy birthday to our manager, Marco, who keeps Cairns City Backpackers running so smoothly and is currently helping to refurbish the hostel. Many happy returns.
Our hostel cat, Pickles, has a knack for finding cool, breezy spots in summer, cosy warm spots in winter and high perches for keeping an eye on the place all year around.
We’re pretty pleased with our latest room reno, giving a tired and drab room a fresh new look with window seat, shower recess and dining nook. A great effort by manager Marco Furlan, resident HelpEx Johan Weintre, tiler Lou Codotto, chippie Aron Littlemore, sparkie Tom House and painter Lui Tuoto.
Traces of 1990s artwork disappear as our manager, Marco, gives the passages a crisp new look.
Pancakes for breakfast today thanks to guests Dave and Rammi. Dave, a chef from Canada, topped the pancakes (his own mix) with fresh tropical fruits, whipped cream and Canadian maple syrup. They were light, fluffy, delish.
Beautiful sunset tonight from the rooftop verandah at Cairns City Backpackers.
Another milestone reached at Cairns City Backpackers today after our manager, Marco, finished the latest room in our refurbishment project. Many thanks Marco for a great job.
