Hosted at Stratford Dolphins Football Club, Barron River Foodfest presents an array of food trucks and local restaurants offering a diverse and delectable selection of $10 “Tropical Tapas” plates.

The evening will be filled with fantastic live music featuring popular local band, The Brazilians and the energetic tunes of Eddie Skiba Music.

From 8-11 August, Australia’s top chefs and hospitality talent will head to Far North Queensland for Taste Port Douglas. 🌴🍤🍹

Now in its eighth iteration, this event is a favourite for foodies across Australia, delivering four days of culinary excellence, and this year is set to be its biggest and best festival yet! For the first time ever, the program of highly-anticipated dining experiences will span across both its home port of Port Douglas and the FNQ capital, Cairns.

Attracting an all-star line up of chefs from across the nation, on the menu this year will be a smorgasbord of delicious events, expert masterclasses and tropical parties, backdropped by the reefs and rainforests of tropical Far North Queensland.

Local hotspots will welcome a series of chef-led events, including the sell-out long sea-side luncheons, ‘A Night of Fire’ at Flames of the Forest, the hottest ticket in town, as well as new and exciting event additions that will cater to all ages.

Our esteemed editor, as MC, charmed the crowd, providing a platform for the talented team of chefs to talk about their contributions to the very special menu collaboration.

For those of you who don't know him already, this is Adam Craven-Sands. Restaurateur, ‘Japan-o-phile’ and occasional tour leader, this guy seriously knows his stuff. On May 1st he will be hosting an evening of Japanese sake and paired food in his own Cairns restaurant Yama Zaru Izakaya 山猿居酒屋. He is a fluent Japanese speaker and veteran of over 70 visits to the land of the rising sun; this will be an evening not to be missed. Not only does Adam's knowledge of Japanese food and wine borders on the encyclopaedic, but his droll observations never fail to delight. Reservations are essential, numbers limited, don't miss it.

We live in a food region so diverse as to boggle the mind. It was amazing to visit Rainforest Heart over the Easter break. More amazing is that this small, but prodigious producer goes beyond just making outstanding and unique products of their own, they also supply a network of restaurants and manufacturers. Measurable by the kilo or occasionally by the tonne, this boutique producer sends tropical FNQ rainforest bush fruits and condiments to garner menus and recipes across the country and beyond.
Each item is a tribute not only to the hard work of the team, but also a flavourful ambassador for this region. BTW the Herbert River Cherry Vinegar (pictured) is so tasty and unique it defies normal description. I can only advise you to try it for yourself. - David, Editor FNQ Food Magazine

Happy hospo anniversary to this outstanding duo, who 18 years ago took over La Fettuccina Restaurant. 18 years is an achievement beyond all but a few FNQ restaurants have managed. Let alone the 38 years that La Fettuccina Restaurant has in total. Congratulations to both Johnny and Andrea, this is a feat for which they can be held directly responsible. There is one reason that “La Fett” has lasted this long… It’s very good!

Saturday marked the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the foundation of Ochre Restaurant in Cairns. 🥳🥂

Although their story started with Red Ochre in Shield Street before moving to the now more familiar venue on the inlet, the drive and consistency of Ochre as pioneers of native ingredients and mod oz fusion is known not just to the residents of Cairns but to visitors from all corners of the globe who have come here for the dining experience.

This marvellous milestone is a fantastic opportunity for Craig Squire and Carley Elsum to boast about their achievements as they become one of the rare members of the three decade club which are dotted around Far North Queensland. A great evening was had by all, and the diversity of attendees from politicos to hospos, former employees, and other well known names in the industry illustrate the fondness that has been developed over this time for such an iconic restaurant.

Happy 30th Anniversary today and our congratulations again on your incredible success. 💫👏

Taste of the Tropics Episode One: TROPPO KITCHEN

Follow acclaimed chef Nick Holloway on an adventure across Far North Queensland, where he seeks out ingredients for a tropical feast. On his journey, he will meet the locals and hear their diverse stories, which showcase the vibrant taste, culture, and people of the region, before creating a dish with the produce he has gathered.

To start, Nick visits his old friend Ricky Lee. Ricky runs a stall selling produce in the iconic “Rusty’s Market”. Ricky invites Nick to visit his small farm in the suburbs of South Cairns to share his story about his family’s journey from Laos to Tropical North Queensland and to share his passion for community and the produce he provides for locals. Nick then meets Marco, a mango farmer from Mareeba. He has been Nick’s personal mango supplier for the last 16 years. Marco is a bona fide North Queensland farmer, with deep connections to the area.

Finally, Nick meets First Nations woman Cheryl Turpin who operates a native foods test farm in Watsonville. Combining her traditional knowledge passed on from her grandmother, a shared vision with her father and scientific knowledge from her horticulture qualifications, Cheryl has a passion project: to develop an Aboriginal led, sustainable food industry on Country.
