4. ๆ
ๆฒ - Benevolence
A practitioner of the Shaolin Arts respects life in every form. Every life is sacred. Thereby valuing life leads to respect for fellow human beings, respect for fellow human beings is necessary to have a harmonic Community.
A Tang Soo Do Club student is encouraged to practice a reverence for all life, promote and engage in community events as well as being mindful of our actions including protecting our greater natural environment. ๐ฒ๐ณ
This selfie was taken by our student Phoebe during our first training beach camp on South Durras NSW. ๐ โ๏ธ
3. ่ฌ่ - Modesty
A practitioner of the Shaolin Arts is characterised by modesty. Bragging is unfamiliar. Being respectful towards others and especially the teachers. All we do, derived from the purity of our heart.
Modesty enable us to never overestimate ourselves and to never underestimate our surroundings.
The third of four virtues to be expected of Shaolin Arts studentโs. It is important not to forget these traditional virtues whether during martial arts training or in our daily lives.
This photo is from one of our first social events which was a black mountain hike followed by a bbq at ANU. Weโre looking to plan multiple social events each semester by the club this year and collaborating with other ANU Clubs.
2. ่ชๅถ - Self Control
Self control is considered of the upmost importance when learning and practising martial arts, as it is a fundamental virtue along the path of mastery.
A warrior doesnโt act according to emotions, they are the master of their own emotions ๐ฅ๐ฅ
How do you practice self control throughout your day? ๐ฅ๐ฅ
1. ็บชๅพ Discipline
Only with strict discipline towards ourselves may we reach our highest potential. We continue to practice self regulation especially when we donโt feel like it. ๐ฅ๐ฅ
Discipline is one of the four virtues to be expected - 14 Virtues of Shaolin.
Meet Clarence, now one of our senior students in class and will easily kick your head or butt. Through his training with us - Clarence has cultivated his discipline each week - put in maximum effort until collapse multiple times - Clarence has quit smoking and drinking which is absolutely amazing and we are very proud to have helped him along the way. Experiencing personalised training Clarence has braved practicing Naihanji kata in the ocean while risking hypothermia on a cold winterโs day and on a tree log in the south durras national park practicing his balance karate kid style. Clarence is a massive Tekken fan - shoutout to Tekken 8 coming out soon.
Come train us and with Clarence at the Tang Soo Do Club at ANU Sport in 2024. ๐ฅ๐ฅ
To get in contact with us - message our page and weโll help provide you will all the info to help get you on to the dojo mats. ๐๐ we reopen Tuesday night 30th of Jan.
The 14 Virtues of Shaolin ๅฐๆๆญฆๅพท
The Shaolin WuDe (virtues of martial arts) is the basic framework and basis for the further learning and personal development in the Shaolin Arts. These virtues are the foundation for most of the traditional martial arts and their creeds. The Shaolin Temple expects their students to learn the WuDe and to work on becoming a better human being everyday and bring value to this world. ๐
The Great Bodhidharma - the founder and first patriarch of Zen Buddhism - gave his disciplines in Shaolin Temple - the virtues of martial arts ๅฐๆๆญฆๅพท almost 1500 years ago.
Our Head Instructor continues to learn the Shaolin Arts via the Shaolin Temple Europe 12 month course - with monthly live sessions with Master Shi Heng Yi - including traditional meditation and qigong ๆฐๅ techniques. ๐ฅ๐ฅ
The martial arts of Shaolin are deeply rooted in Buddhist ethics and morality. Shaolin is primarily concerned with the cultivation of human nature and therefore supports the emphasis in becoming aware of the responsibility that every individual has for their actions, our society and our environment. ๐ณ
We at the Tang Soo Do Club, strongly believe that the cultivation and pursuit of martial arts can spread joy and inner peace in your heart. That give people the inner strength to face lifeโs daily challenges and provide a lifelong spirit of learning. ๐๐

Wisdom Wednesday Post ๐ฅ๐ฅ
โDo not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise; seek what they soughtโ - Matsuo Basho
Create your own path, youโre on your own journey though we can seek what the great philosophers who ever lived sought and pursed.
What worked for someone then may not work now, times change and therefore we must change as well. ๐ ๐
If discipline is one example, how are you practising discipline in your life ๐ฅ๐ฅ
For our martial arts journey, we are seeking the pursuit of physical, mental and spiritual strength and development.

Last year we had Kancho Reece teach a Kobudo class in September. ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
No class on Friday 22nd of September. Classes resume as normal next week.
Weโre looking for a guest instructor to teach a class in November ๐ฅ๐ฅ
Wisdom Wednesday post ๐ฅ๐ฅ
โWe have two lives, and the second begins when we realise we only have oneโ - Confucius
Death teaches us about life. How do you want to live your life, what kind of person do you want to be? ๐ฅ๐ฅ
Register your interest and sign up for our third annual Beach Training Camp held on the first weekend of December.
Great opportunity to get away for the weekend. Weโve booked another house overlooking the ocean.
Great views and ocean breeze while we train ๐

Wisdom Wednesday ๐ฅ๐ฅ
โDo not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.โ - Buddha
Practising martial arts is one avenue that allows one to be in the moment. Our problems often lie in the past or the future. Having a method to ground yourself and be in the moment is imperative for oneโs overall health and well-being.
Specifically- Kata/Hyung/TaoLu (Forms) have multiple tiered layers that benefit the practitioner one way being an opportunity to concentrate the mind on the present moment and being cognisant of each breath and movement.
Wisdom Wednesdays -
โInner strength can overcome anything that occurs outside.โ - Patanjali
Martial Arts training can uniquely build inner strength through persistence, dedication and overcoming physical/mental barriers.
Inner strength is often overlooked in a world focused on exterior appearances.
Nevertheless, physical and mental fortitude is essential for living a healthy and fulfilling life.
Each Wednesday we will publish a short wisdom post.
Well done to students who contested for their grade last night at our first promotional rank testing of the year. Students demonstrated great spirit, resilience and respect. ๐๐
โBe grateful even for hardship, setbacks and bad people. Dealing with such obstacles is an essential part of training in the Art of Peace.โ
- Morihei Ueshiba
โThe purpose of training is to tighten up the slack, toughen the body and polish the spirit.โ
- Morihei Ueshiba (Father of Aikido)
Was great to visit Sensei Turnbullโs ANU Aikido class, learnt some valuable principles regarding qi and letting your opponent go where they want to go. Quite the complimentary opposite to our karate style. Was nice having a visitor try our class as well.
Three more weeks til our grading. Weekly classes will continue until December ๐ฅ๐ฅ
Empower your body, mind and spirit.
Open to 3 new enrolments this month of July
Our first grading/rank promotional test of the year is set for July the 25th during our Tuesday session.
Students are progressing well ๐ฅ๐ฅ
Photos from our last couple weeks of training.
The martial arts journey includes fighting your inner demons and yourself against weakness, temptations, a bombardment of dopamine hits from our phones and videos games. To live a life of discipline or to live a life of regret. Enjoy each moment rather than being contained and restricted. Hit the daily grind to become better than you were yesterday.
โMotivation is crap, motivation comes and goes. When youโre driven, whatever is in front of you will get destroyedโ - David Goggins
Itโs never too late to start training, life is a continuous learning process. Our exclusive classes are designed and continually refined for working professionals, university students and university graduates ๐
