Mapping the ‘K-’ flow via K-Influencers in global social media pop cultures
Curtin University of Technology, WA
Closing date: 25 August 2023
This PhD project will examine the K-influencer ecology in the Asia Pacific region, by investigating the flow of ‘K-‘ capital (acronym of Korean culture) in social media pop cultures. The project aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the interactions, tensions, and symbiotic relationships between Influencers, industries, governments, and technological bodies within the broader social media landscape.
This PhD project will be conducted at the Influencer Ethnography Research Lab (IERLab), led by Professor Crystal Abidin as Director and Dr Jin Lee as a Research Fellow and core team member. The IERLab consists of an interdisciplinary and international team of social scientists dedicated to examining the socio-cultural influence of Influencers. The project will align with the ethos of the IERLab by employing a localized, contextualized, and multilingual approach, with a specific focus on prioritizing Internet research from the Asia Pacific region and Global South.
For further information, and for any queries, please contact IERLab Director and Project Primary Supervisor Professor Crystal Abidin at [email protected] well ahead of the August 25 2023 application due date.

Youth sociality in the era of visual social media: intersectional feminist approaches
Curtin University of Technology, WA
Closing date: 25 August 2023
As part of the Centre for Culture and Technology (CCAT) programs of research on Digital Intimacies and Digital Disability, this project is concerned with explorations of youth sociality, communication, and representation on digital platforms, particularly around vectors of gender and disability.
This project will scope an area for investigation around these vectors in relation to youth experiences in the era of visual social media. The candidate may choose to focus on, for instance, queer/feminist/crip activist communities and online content production, new pressures and opportunities around body image and body diversity in relation to visual social media platforms, or digital and image-based forms of abuse, harassment, and violence in relation to such. We are particularly interested in qualitative sociological and cultural studies research methods for providing rich accounts of young people’s experience of growing up with the widespread normalization of visual social media platforms.
Click here for more information, including application instructions/guidelines, and please direct all enquiries to the Project lead, Dr Amy Dobson.
