‘Kids into Sport’ is about every young person in Tuggeranong having the chance to play sport 🏀🎾🏈

This community project by the Rotary Club of Tuggeranong and The Vikings Group is intended to ensure that cost is no barrier to playing sport in Tuggeranong. It delivers funding for sports fees, uniforms and equipment to those who need it most.

‘Kids into Sport’ considers applications for funding for anyone aged 6-18, living in Tuggeranong, wanting to play for a local sports team and attending school.

Last week, Laura and I were delighted to meet the team from the Vikings, hear more about ‘Kids into Sport’ and share some of our work championing grassroots community sport in the ACT Legislative Assembly.

Back in April 2021 I moved a motion in the Assembly honouring the commitments the ACT Greens made to grassroots community sport, calling on the ACT Government to, among other things, ‘Tackle barriers to participation in sport for Canberrans facing disadvantage’.

While we wait for the ACT Government to progress that work, I’m delighted that community organisations are stepping up, filling the void and making sure that kids in Tuggeranong don’t miss out on the physical, social and emotional benefits of grassroots community sport.

Kids into Sport works with local Tuggeranong sports clubs, schools, communities, and welfare organisations to ensure cost is no barrier for our kids to join a sports team.

🏀 How Kids into Sport works 🏐

👉 Sports organisations, schools and other support organisation become approved 'Referring Partners'
👉 Participants who need support to play are identified and apply through a Referring Partner
👉 Applications are assessed by the voluntary Kids into Sport Committee
👉 Funding for approved Participants goes direct to the sport to cover fees, uniform and equipment
👉 Kids into Sport checks in to ensure that the Participant is well supported to play their chosen sport
