Happy first birthday GRC Canberra 🥳

To all our members, mentors, coaches and most of all to the amazing puppers 🐾

Thank you for making our first year so wonderful. We've thoroughly enjoyed watching everyone learning from eachother and growing together and feel so very lucky to be a part of this awesome community ❤

Today’s training started with some line drills on direct and indirect rewards. Then we moved onto some spring pole. We haven’t done a lot of Spring Pole work as a club, and none that actually looks somewhat like a trial, so this was a first.

27/09/2020

A big weekend of training for our GRC Canberra members. On Saturday we did a run through of the SR test at a different location. It was windy and cold AF, but was great for us to see what areas we needed to work on. Some of our members hadn’t seen the SR test before and did super well!

20/09/2020

SATURDAY TRAINING

We did a fun exercise at training yesterday where we worked in groups and someone from the group would call out a position (or number of positions) the dog had to perform and then what distraction or different location they had to add in.

This helped test the dogs commitment and understanding of the position and put them under some pressure while performing it.

All our dogs are at different levels so for some just doing anything in proximity to that many dogs was amazing, while others could be tested with unintended cues that we may give off.

We had twelve members at training and didn’t get to film them all, but they all loved the challenges that we set for each other.

Then we finished off with some drive sports.

It may have snowed on us, but our GRC Canberra crew had an awesome time training this morning.

So many great achievements! Reactive dogs working in close proximity to others, dogs building great play games and some maxing out the slat mill.

Awesome work team!!

Koa | Fetching Dogs

One of our friends over at Prime Canine Sports Club has this lovely little guy in foster care at the moment. We’re told he’s a super little GRC prospect for anyone looking for their next dog.

GRC Canberra Training Day

A great day to be back to training with the GRC Canberra crew! Our books are closed but we were able to welcome one new member who did super well and welcome a few who hadn’t made it to an official training session yet.

So many breakthroughs with behaviour around other dogs and enjoying trying out some of the drive sports.

Best fun!

This is a great post by TATE Animal Training Enterprises 👍

We should all be about celebrating our dog's genetic gifts and helping them become well rounded, happy and appropriately fulfilled 🐶

If your Labrador likes running around with random things in his mouth, he's a good dog. If your Jack Russell loves to chase small animals she's a good girl. If your cattledog likes nipping the heels of any fast moving creature that’s a fine example of its class. If your husky pulls like a draft horse while connected to a harness, SENSATIONAL!!
If your German shepherd guards your property with great vigilance, give that dog a bone 🦴 .... or do you have a Beagle that ignores you when it catches a whiff of something novel on the ground? Well that's just lovely!

Before dogs became family pets, they were selectively bred for a plethora of different jobs and purposes; Retrieve ducks, round up livestock, bail up lions, guard properties and pull sleds.

The behaviours mentioned above shouldn’t just be written off as ‘behavioural’ issues, they should be celebrated as genetic gifts.
Instead of trying to suppress your dogs natural desires or instincts, consider embracing these traits and harnessing them into positive outlets.

It’s the reason we acquired a Belgian Malinois for bite work, Springer Spaniels for scent work and an Aussie Shepherd for trick work.

Find an appropriate hobby that gives your dog a positive genetic outlet and makes them feel GOOD about themselves as well as addressing that ‘problem’ behaviour.

Today was the first official training session back for our GRC Canberra club members, the cold and rain wasn’t going to stop us!

We had a few dogs who hadn’t been able to come prior to COVID so we worked on lots of activities to get them working around the other dogs and having fun!

So good to be back!

We have a new club logo!!!

This weekend GRC Canberra were so pleased to host Jas Whiting from Prime Canine for a two day seminar. We went through some theory and fundamentals on day one, and got to see the dogs working.

Day two was all about the drive sports, with many of the dogs working on spring pole or building their play game.

You can see just how happy both the owners and the dogs are - the best fun!!

No rest for the wicked! ;)

We are still planning our usual club practice day next weekend (15th or 16th) and will publish an event with specifics soon.

Planning is also underway for the forward calendar and we'll pop something up shortly so that you can get dates locked away in your diaries.

Why Middle? — GRC Dogsports

Why middle?

GRC Dogsports founder Jay Jack has written an excellent piece outlining why middle should be your favourite position. 😄

Read it here: https://www.grcdogsports.com/blog/2020/2/14/why-middle

grcdogsports.com I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to actually write this article. I’ve been on a personal campaign to raise awareness of Middle Position for years. I have traveled all over the world advocating for it. And I just thought… Oh… Let me just link to an article about why I use it so much....

Miku honey... you actually need to move 😅

The SR test provides such a great framework for people who are just getting back into training after a break or perhaps who are new to dog training all together! When you break it down it's clear what skills the team needs to focus on. Look at the great teamwork being shown at club practice this morning ❤️🙌 GRC is for everyone!

GRC Canberra Training

The weather hasn’t been kind to us the past two months in Canberra with bushfires, hailstorms, smoke haze and 44 degree days calling a halt to our training. A few of us got together today for a make up session and test out a few of the sections of the SR test. Good doggos!

If you're wondering about where to start with training, this is must read.

grcdogsports.com Obviously the FIRST step is registering your dog with GRC. But…. Once that’s out of the way…. The next question I get is…. Where do I start with training? 29/01/2020

Hey team!

We are conscious that this weekend is again not looking great as far as weather and fire conditions go.

At this stage, club practice is still on for Sunday afternoon but we are monitoring things and will let you know as soon as anything changes.

We apologise in advance if we do have to cancel but our highest priority is the safety and wellbeing of all of you and there will be many more days of training once this is all over.

Please take care over the coming days.
