The Liveable Income Guarantee - The Missing Link in Social Security? 19/09/2022

I figured this might interest some members. On tomorrow.

The Liveable Income Guarantee – The Missing Link in Social Security?

A webinar organised by the Australian Basic Income Lab and the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Sydney on Tuesday September 20.

Social security took a back seat in a Federal election dominated by the cost of living more broadly, climate change and integrity in politics. As a consequence, the Australian Greens proposal for a Liveable Income Guarantee of $88 per day largely flew beneath the radar of mainstream policy debate and public discussion. The proposal merits further attention in a context ongoing health and environmental crises, and the persistent effects of poverty, inequality and insecurity. After Australia’s natural experiment with a quasi-basic income during COVID-19 ended, we have returned to a situation where large numbers of Australians live well below the poverty line while being required to meet onerous and ineffective mutual obligation conditions. Please join Australian Greens Social Services spokesperson Senator Janet Rice, social security expert Prof Gaby Ramia, and economist and Liveable Income Guarantee co-originator Prof John Quiggin to debate the merits of a Liveable Income Guarantee for Australia.

Speakers:

Senator Janet Rice, Australian Greens Senator for Victoria

Prof Gaby Ramia, University of Sydney

Prof John Quiggin, University of Queensland

Moderator:

Dr Troy Henderson (Co-Director, Australian Basic Income Lab, University of Sydney)

Time/Date: 12:15pm-1:30pm, Tuesday September 20

Venue: Online (Zoom Webinar)
