Today is International Midwives Day, a day to thank and celebrate midwives for their enormous contribution working in partnership with women and their families on their life-changing journey to parenthood and beyond!

ANMAC recognises the significant impact that all midwives make to the health of our community through the provision of sustainable models of care to women and their families.

Midwives play a pivotal role in reducing the effects of climate change by the empowering women to make decisions that benefit themselves, their families and our planet.

ANMAC assessors will be live on Wednesday 1st May to answer any questions you have regarding the skills assessment process. Please note we cannot answer visa or immigration related questions.

ANMAC expresses our sadness at the passing of Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue AC CBE DSG, who died on 4 February 2024 at 91. She leaves an immense legacy as a trailblazer and advocate for improving Indigenous rights in Australia.

Through her leadership and initiatives, and as the first trainee Aboriginal nurse in South Australia, she fought for the rights of Indigenous Australians, ensuring their voices were heard and issues raised.

Her vision and determination were pivotal in shaping policies that aimed to close the gap in health, education, and employment outcomes for Indigenous people. Dr. O'Donoghue’s compassion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice will be remembered as an inspiration to all who strive for a more inclusive and equitable society in Australia and beyond. Her contributions will continue to make a lasting impact for generations to come.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) are joining forces to gather feedback on the nurse practitioner regulatory framework.

ANMAC cordially invites you to take part in the review of the nurse practitioner accreditation standards.

To contribute, simply review the consultation paper and fill out the online survey, which you can find at www.anmac.org.au. Let your voice be heard!

In fact, according to research from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), it's estimated that prostate cancer will account for 28% of cancers diagnosed in males this year.

ANMAC seeks to walk alongside all First Nations peoples and particularly First Nations Nurses and Midwives and to stand together and lend our voice for meaningful and effective, systemic change.

Today is day and we’d like to check in with all the healthcare professionals and students.

By the very nature of their profession, nurses and midwives are exceptionally good at identifying and attending to the needs of others. But so often this comes at the cost of their own self-care – they are exposed to high emotional, psychological, cognitive and physical demands.

At the very top of the list is compassion fatigue but they also have to manage:

📌staffing levels & shift work
📌policy changes & models of care
📌engaging and managing patients’ families
📌sensitivity for culturally diverse women
📌guiding partners into parenthood
📌trauma care – anxiety, grief, loss and depression (for patients, families as well as themselves)
📌remote community practice management and work.

It’s also the next generation of healthcare professionals who need a personal healthcare plan to help them recognise and mange:

👉 study stress
👉 working to support themselves
👉 facing the challenges of a new career

Regardless of your situation, know that you are not alone. There are so many people and organisations that are - whether it’s a peer support group to celebrate a truly brilliant day or a care line to listen.
