Today and every day, we celebrate the achievements, strength, and resilience of women worldwide.
ANMAC has an exciting opportunity; why not join us in making a difference in Nursing and Midwifery across Australia?
ANMAC expresses our sadness at the passing of Dr Lowitja OโDonoghue AC CBE DSG, who died on 4 February 2024 at 91. She leaves an immense legacy as a trailblazer and advocate for improving Indigenous rights in Australia.
Through her leadership and initiatives, and as the first trainee Aboriginal nurse in South Australia, she fought for the rights of Indigenous Australians, ensuring their voices were heard and issues raised.
Her vision and determination were pivotal in shaping policies that aimed to close the gap in health, education, and employment outcomes for Indigenous people. Dr. O'Donoghueโs compassion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice will be remembered as an inspiration to all who strive for a more inclusive and equitable society in Australia and beyond. Her contributions will continue to make a lasting impact for generations to come.

Itโs the month of the Mo.
Prostate cancer โ itโs the number one cancer affecting Australian men.
In fact, according to research from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), it's estimated that prostate cancer will account for 28% of cancers diagnosed in males this year.
Over the last 20 years, participation in Movember has skyrocketed - from 30 to over 7million. These moustaches have funded some more than 1,300 menโs health projects around the world and some of the 21st centuryโs most significant breakthroughs in the management of advanced prostate cancer.

๐บ Honouring Our Heroes: ANMAC remember Vivian Bullwinkel
At ANMAC, we believe in recognising and paying tribute to the exceptional contributions of nurses and midwives throughout history. Yesterday, ANMAC staff visited the remarkable sculpture of Vivian Bullwinkel at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Bullwinkel's legacy is etched in the history of nursing and her dedication continues to inspire nurses and midwives around the world.
During our visit, accompanied by Group Captain Kath Stein GAICD, FACN, we reflected on the profound impact Bullwinkel has had on nursing and midwifery in Australia and beyond. Her story is proof of the power of nursing to change lives and make a lasting difference.
ANMAC seeks to walk alongside all First Nations peoples and particularly First Nations Nurses and Midwives and to stand together and lend our voice for meaningful and effective, systemic change.
Today is day and weโd like to check in with all the healthcare professionals and students.
By the very nature of their profession, nurses and midwives are exceptionally good at identifying and attending to the needs of others. But so often this comes at the cost of their own self-care โ they are exposed to high emotional, psychological, cognitive and physical demands.
At the very top of the list is compassion fatigue but they also have to manage:
๐staffing levels & shift work
๐policy changes & models of care
๐engaging and managing patientsโ families
๐sensitivity for culturally diverse women
๐guiding partners into parenthood
๐trauma care โ anxiety, grief, loss and depression (for patients, families as well as themselves)
๐remote community practice management and work.
Itโs also the next generation of healthcare professionals who need a personal healthcare plan to help them recognise and mange:
๐ study stress
๐ working to support themselves
๐ facing the challenges of a new career
Regardless of your situation, know that you are not alone. There are so many people and organisations that are - whether itโs a peer support group to celebrate a truly brilliant day or a care line to listen.
Nurse & Midwife Support is a national support service for nurses, midwives and students. If you'd like confidential support, call 1800 667 877.
Weโd like to thank Mark Aitken from for recording this podcast and Anne and Sonya for sharing their experience and knowledge.
Why not take a โself-careโ morning walk to listen, or some time out to read the transcript.๐
Your mental health matters Thank you to all who listened to our first podcast. Your feedback has been positive and useful so we decided to make another podcast. This podcast is about mental health.
Exciting day at ANMAC!!! Today, we're bringing the board and staff together for a strategic planning day! ๐
Collaboration between our dedicated team and board members is essential as we chart our course for the future. Together, we'll shape a roadmap that ensures ANMAC's continued success in advancing our mission and serving our community.
Stay tuned for updates as we work hand in hand to set our course for the next chapter of excellence in healthcare accreditation ๐ช
