New Australian Bureau of Agricultural & Resource Economics & Sciences (ABARES) report: Cost of established pest animals and w**ds to Australian agricultural producers
Key findings:
💠Established vertebrate pest animals and w**ds are estimated to cost Australian agricultural producers at least 5.3 billion annually.
💠W**ds are contributing 82% of this total.
💠Management expenditure - time and effort to address pests and w**ds - contributed 72% of the total cost.
The findings show why the work of the Centre and our partners is critical in addressing the impact of invasive plants and animals across Australia.

Invasive species review The NSW Premier has requested the Commission to review the priority risks and impacts of invasive species in NSW, including the effectiveness of current management strategies.
What are invasive species?
🌏All around the world, alarming numbers of unique species of birds and animals are
disappearing. A significant driver of these extinctions is the introduction of new animals into countries where they haven’t previously existed — sometimes it happens by accident; sometimes it’s deliberate. These animals are known as invasive species.

📢Draft updated threat abatement plan for predation by feral cats.
Last week, on Threatened Species Day, we witnessed the federal government taking a crucial step by releasing a draft Threat Abatement Plan for Feral Cats for public consultation. The threat posed by feral cats to our unique wildlife cannot be understated, contributing to the decline of beloved species like the Bilby and Bandicoot.
🔸 Over 1.5 billion native mammals, birds, reptiles, and frogs are killed annually
🔸 200+ nationally listed threatened species are at risk
🔸 Implicated in 28 mammal extinctions

We're spotlighting w**dy problems this World Environmental Health Day 🌿 Under the Australian W**ds Strategy, 32 W**ds of National Significance have been identified by Australian governments based on their invasiveness, potential for spread and environmental, social and economic impacts. 🌱African Boxthorn
Originally from South Africa, African Boxthorn is a W**d of National Significance. This spiny shrub can grow up to 5m tall and wide, spreading quickly via seeds.
🌱Asparagus Fern
Originating from South Africa, the Asparagus Fern has become a serious environmental w**d. This common garden plant easily re-establishes when discarded as garden waste and is spread by birds, which disperse viable seeds up to several kilometers away!
🌱Alligator W**d
Hailing from South America, Alligator W**d is an aquatic herb that has become a significant concern. It forms large, dense mats in cool to warm temperate, sub-tropical, and tropical areas, obstructing waterways, impeding flows, and limiting light and oxygen.

🌏 Australia's Call to Action to Prevent Biodiversity Loss
The recent landmark report warns of an alarming trend: the costs incurred due to invasive alien species have been quadrupled every decade since 1970. It is imperative that Australia amplifies its efforts in biosecurity to prevent further economic and environmental damage.
The focus must shift towards preventing the introduction and establishment of new alien species and diseases, not just those posing a risk to agriculture but also those threatening nature. These include the Giant African land snail (pictured), avian influenza, and new tramp ants, among others.
