Congratulations to our newest Graduate Lawyer Olivia who was admitted today at the ACT Supreme Court! Her admission was moved by our wonderful Senior Lawyer Nicola.

Bring a lawyer is a duty, not a job. At the Centre we have duties to the women we serve, to the profession, to the Court, and to ourselves to be the best lawyers we can be.

We are so lucky to have Olivia joining our team of amazing lawyers at the Centre. Noteably, Liv is perhaps our first family lawyer who is also a professional muay thai boxer! Congratulations Liv! 🥂🍾🎈🎉

Migrant workers are disproportionately impacted by wage theft in employment.

The Migrant Justice Institute has recently released their report 'All work, no pay' on why the small claim's jurisdiction is not helping unrepresented migrant workers to recover wage theft.

One of the key recommendations of this report were that legal services like ours receive more funding to ensure migrants and vulnerable workers are able to pursue underpayment claims.

If you need help understanding what you should be being paid, and what you should do if you are being underpaid, or if you are concerned about how this may impact your migration/visa status Contact the Centre to speak with our Employment, or Migration teams.

To contact the Centre call 02 6257 4377 or make a request for assistance https://wlc.org.au/get-help/request-for-legal-assistance/

Last night our CEO Elena Rosenman spoke on ABC's 7:30 about the chronic underfunding of the legal assistance sector.

Each week Women's Legal Services across Australia turn away at least 1000 women who approach our services for assistance because we do not have the funding, or the staff to assist.

You can listen to her powerful commentary on this issue: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/XeaxevPZ9N3rT6u9/

If you would like to support the work of our Centre you can donate https://wlc.org.au/donate/ or you can write to your local Member about this issue.

Courts 'can do more' for sexual assault complainants: Chief Justice 29/05/2024

Erin Priestly, Head of the Sexual Violence Legal Service at the Centre spoke to the Canberra Times about the ways the rights of complainants can be better protected in criminal proceedings related to sexual violence.

"We have observed judges to give significant leeway to the accused party to undertake cross-examination rather than to step in to ensure these protections are enforced..."

Ms Priestly said the service supported the introduction of a specialised sexual assault court list, and its goals of reducing delays and achieving earlier resolutions.

"A specialised list is just one step in building faith in the criminal justice system. It alone will not achieve this, however, and it is just one change amongst many that are needed," the lawyer said.

"Such a list will only be successful where everyone involved - the judicial officers, the prosecutors, and defence solicitors - have adequate training on trauma responses to sexual violence and consider the design of processes to ameliorate these."
