One hundred percent of donations go directly to supporting students in need โ and gifts above $2 are fully tax-deductible. For many students, studying at the University of Canberra represents a bright future, an opportunity to change their life for the better and achieve their dreams. Unfortunately for some, the added financial strain can cause those dreams to shatter and become unachievable.
The Student Empowerment Fund was introduced in 2020 for students who were experiencing sudden financial hardship due to the impact of COVID-19. It consists of a one-off bursary to contribute towards immediate, short-term needs including basic living and medical costs.
As rent prices, fuel prices and grocery prices continue to rise to new extremes, so does the number of students who need support. The Student Empowerment Fund exists to provide students with immediate financial support when they need it most, enabling them to continue their studies.
Last year the Student Empowerment Fund supported ๐ญ๐ณ๐ฏ ๐๐๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ with accommodation, loan devices, grocery and food vouchers, medical support and/or placement related support, with a further ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฌ ๐๐๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ receiving an end-of-year food hamper from the UCX Food Pantry.

Congratulations to UC Emeritus Professor Elivio Bonollo AM who was recognised in this year's King's Birthday Honours alongside eight UC alumni ๐
Always striving to reach his personal best and treating everyone he meets with empathy, respect and compassion โ thatโs the approach that has led to both personal and professional fulfillment , said UC Emeritus Professor Elivio Bonollo AM, as he reflected on his appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia in this yearโs Kingโs Birthday Honours last week.
โThese are challenging and difficult attributes to develop continuously โ and probably difficult to fully or even partly achieve โ but they can be very rewarding, and lead to happiness and good relationships in life,โ he said.

At 18, Dan hit a crossroads in his life. Hard.
He had been part of an elite NRL teamโs youth pathway for four years, but a stint in hospital gave him time to ponder where his life was headed.
At the end of his school years, lying in hospital after a corrective heart operation, he had a dream pathway into potential fame and fortune as a senior NRL player โ but also a gnawing recognition that he yearned to explore other pathways. Following an online undergraduate Psychology degree, Dan decided to complete his Honours at UC and is now undertaking a PhD in Clinical Psychology.
โI want to work with people to make research practical in a clinical setting, and in particular, I want to work with the Indigenous population.
โIndigenous Australians are 2.5 times more likely to die of su***de than non-Indigenous Australians and closing that gap, and addressing the mental health crisis in the Indigenous community, are things Iโm very passionate about.โ

You never know where or when you're going to bump into a fellow UC Alum ๐ฅฐ
Where's the furthest you've run into someone from UC? ๐
โจ Once upon a time there were two people who belonged to the UC community.
One was a former student and the other a current lecturer in UC's Faculty of Health.
One day, they both had a plane to catch, so they made their way to Jakarta Airport. Out of pure randomness, the two bumped into each other and chatted for hours without previously knowing one another.
This is just another example of how far and wide our community has spread. ๐

Lest We Forget.
Anzac Day is a national day of commemoration and remembrance when we mark the landings at Gallipoli in 1915. We also commemorate all Australians who have served and died.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
