Chronic CF lung infections appear to ‘exhaust’ immune system

Researchers have found that people with cystic fibrosis (CF) may have impaired immune systems due to persistent lung infections and inflammation. 🦠 TruCulture, a new noninvasive test, revealed that CF patients produce fewer immune signaling proteins compared to healthy individuals, showing potential immune exhaustion.

While the test couldn't predict lung function changes after antibiotics, it might help track disease progression. 🌱 This highlights the ongoing challenges CF patients face in managing their health.

Cystic Fibrosis ACT was proud to attend PharmAus24, where the theme Accelerating Patient Access to New Medicines highlighted the urgent need for HTA reforms to ensure faster, more equitable access to essential treatments. It was an incredible opportunity to advocate for the cystic fibrosis community and be part of the broader push for a stronger PBS.

Please note an important update from Cystic Fibrosis Australia regarding the availability of Creon 10,000. If you encounter any issues accessing your medication, we recommend contacting the Viatris Customer Care Line at 1800 274 276 or emailing [email protected] for support.

As the Peak National Body representing people living with cystic fibrosis across Australia, we have been informed by Viatris, the manufacturer of Creon, that there will be a temporary shortage of Creon (10,000) in pharmacies nationwide. The shortage is expected to last until the end of October 2024, and while shipments will continue to be received during this period, availability may be limited and could vary between pharmacies.

We kindly ask that you avoid panic buying or stockpiling medication, as this can exacerbate shortages and impact others in the community who also rely on Creon (10,000) for their treatment.

We understand the critical role Creon plays in managing cystic fibrosis, and we want to ensure that you are aware of this situation so that you can make appropriate preparations. If you experience any difficulties obtaining your medication, or if you have any concerns, we encourage you to reach out directly to the Viatris Customer Care Line at 1800 274 276 or email [email protected] for assistance.

We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to advocate for our community to ensure that access to vital medications is maintained. If you have any questions or need further information, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

CFTR correctors found to boost potassium flow in CF lung cells

A study found that CFTR correctors, like elexacaftor in Trikafta, improve lung function by enhancing potassium flow through the BKCa protein channel, aiding lung hydration. However, BKCa activation also affects blood vessels and nerve cells, potentially causing side effects such as high blood pressure and mental fogginess.
