Meet Lily - Events Officer 🌻🎉

Hi! My name’s Lily and I’m AMSA Rural Health’s 2024 Social Rep.

I am really invested in learning more about rural health and giving others the opportunity to learn too, and hope to run some events that allow for this to happen!

These are just a few pictures from my rural expeditions so far, and I hope to be able to share many more with you over the year!

Meet Lois - ARCSSS Project Officer 🌻🌾

Hi, I’m Lois. I’m from Albury-Wodonga and I’m super excited to be part of AMSA Rural Health.

I’ve always been passionate about the disparities in rural & remote areas especially in the field of sexual and reproductive health.

I would love to improve awareness and access to credible research in rural health.

Meet Kiana - Sponsorship Officer! 🌾🤠

I grew up as an active member of a rural community in a small town called Mundubbera in the North Burnett region of Queensland.

From a young age I have been interested in health and have recognised the disparities facing rural communities. After I graduate, I plan to return to small communities and help reduce some of these health disparities the best I can.

I’m passionate about helping those with no rural experience to understand the rural healthcare system and how it may differ to what they are used to, and to realise the opportunities that rural health has to offer.

Meet Mads - Publication Officer! 🌻🤠

Hello all! My name is Mads, and I’m your AMSA Rural Publications officer for 2024!

I’m currently heading into my second year of medical school at the University of Sydney, and will be completing my entire four years of the degree in Dubbo NSW. I spent most of my childhood in Mildura VIC, and growing up in a regional town allowed me an insight into the differences in resources and healthcare we face as opposed to the big cities. I wanted to do my part, so here I am!

I’m not quite sure what sort of doctor I’d like to end up as, to be honest. So many fields are interesting to me. Oncology, gynaecology, public health? Something else entirely? Who knows! I’m just vibing, and there’s plenty of time to figure that stuff out, right? ... Right? Guys?

Meet Seamus - Project Officer! 🌻🚜

Hi, I’m Seamus, and It’s my pleasure and privilege to be a project officer for AMSA Rural in 2024! I’m a current MD1 at Notre Dame Fremantle. I grew up in Mullewa (WA), which means ‘place of fog’ in the language of the Wajarri Yamatji people.

I’m passionate about access to quality mental health services for people from rural and isolated areas, and have worked as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in various inpatient facilities. I look forward to working with my fellow project officers and AMSA rural to continue to improve the outcomes of people outside our Metro areas.

Meet Dom - Vice Rural Chair! 🌾🚜

Hello, I’m Dom and I’m AMSA Rural’s Vice Chair Internal for 2024! I’m a Sydney born metro student who has come to medicine from Physiotherapy. I was fortunate to have many positive childhood experiences on my Grandads property in the Illawarra (Kangaroo Valley). This exposure to rural life and rural communities developed my love for the country. I love the lifestyle that country life offers and hope to mix that with my surfing to one day practice as a GP, potentially on the Regional South Coast.

I came to Medicine motivated to extend my scope of practice from Physiotherapy, with the intention to deliver more holistic patient care in rural communities. My career aspirations are to be a Rural Generalist – I’m excited to see where this journey takes me!

Photos from AMSA Rural Health's post 25/01/2024

Meet Kate - Rural Vice Chair! 🌻🚜

G’day, My name is Kate and I’m your AMSA Rural Vice Chair for 2024.

A little bit about me, I am originally from Port Macquarie on NSW’s Mid North Coast and I’m currently in my second year studying Medicine at the University of Notre Dame. I come from a background of GP management and GP recruitment and relationship management before starting my medical studies.

I’ve got a keen interest in pursuing rural generalism and general practice moving forward and strongly believe in focusing healthcare towards our regional and remote communities. Rural healthcare is a passion of mine and I feel delighted that I will be able to work with and alongside so many likeminded students within the AMSA Rural community.

About Us

AMSA’s Rural Health Committee was founded in 2016 by Dr Skye Kinder and Dr Sophie Alpen, medical students who had been working within AMSA to advocate for rural health and sought a stronger platform to bring together students with a rural passion.

The committee now consists of volunteers from across the country, who collaborate on a wide range of initiatives both within and outside of AMSA to advocate on behalf of medical students and rural communities, inspire interest in rural health through publications and events, and educate students about the opportunities rural practice has to offer.
