Youth Leading in STEM (YLS) is an ANU-sponsored organisation that aims to empower and support students from rural and low-SES backgrounds that are interested in pursuing tertiary studies in STEM. YLS runs an annual three-day residential camp that provides young students in Year 9 and 10 the opportunity to explore STEM.
YLS is currently recruiting youth mentors for the residential camp which allows university students to have a significant impact on the lives of students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The mentoring program requires mentors to attend the camp where they are expected to support and encourage their mentees to pursue tertiary studies in STEM as well as help students implement a community science project at their school over the course of 6 months. Some successful projects that have been implemented in the past include an astronomy night and a STEM club. The YLS residential camp runs from Wednesday 23rd June to Friday 25th June 2021 at the Australian National University.
