✨ARTIST FEATURE ✨
Fremantle, you’ll be familiar with Todd Millias! Artist and manager down at the port city, Todd is an avid drawer and illustrator wearing many creative hats.

🎨What’s your history, Todd?
I cut my teeth as a freelance Illustrator and went on to be a Traditional Animator and Animation Director. Simultaneously to this, I taught Graphic Design / Film & TV and Multimedia at TAFE before becoming a corporate Technical Writer. I now enjoy drawing and writing for myself (sans-brief) and of course managing Jackson's Fremantle with my team.

🎨 What's your favourite medium?
Pencils are king in my domain and a close second pen and ink. I love my Copics and soft pastels and once in a while dabble in watercolours.

🎨 What's your favourite subject matter to dabble in?
Anatomy, pose and expression have always been my area of discipline and mastering the human and animal form my passion.

🎨Who are some of your favourite artists?
This is an ever-changing group of influences but the artists that will forever keep me inspired are Frank Frazetta, Jean Giraud Moebius and Ralph Steadman.

🎨 What’s some advice you would give to other emerging artists and creatives out there?
Stop thinking! Just do it! Over thinking kills all artistic endeavor's and I've seen it freeze too many talented and brilliant artist's in their tracks. It is, however, a discipline and a little each day or week is all that is needed.

While you’re out enjoying the winter sun in Freo, have a blast checking out the illustration wall (done by the firecracker staff) and get Todd’s recommendations on all your drawing needs. Thanks Todd!

Soft pastels are a drawing material that consist of powdered pigment and a binder to hold it together. Pressed into cylinders, pebbles or pans of colour, they can lay down rich colour for drawing.

Soft pastels are a great accessible medium – it can be directly laid down and doesn’t require any prep. They're great for mapping out sketches and filling in large areas of colour quickly without having to do much prep.

Smudge for that atmospheric effect, apply a wash and build up layers, or use directly in expressive strokes. As always with dry loose mediums, make sure to seal your work when finishing!

Have you used soft pastels before? Who are your favourite pastel artists?

✨ ARTIST FEATURE: Say hi to Sam Ellis! ✨

If you're down in the beautiful South-West, you may have run into Sam, our manager and mixed media dabbler at our Bunbury store. Sam loves to try out all different art forms and styles, playing and experimenting with many mediums.

🎨What’s the best part about working with Jacksons?
The best part would have to be the AMAZING artists & artworks I get to see, being created with products Jacksons supplies and the extensive knowledge I have had the opportunity to gain during my time with the company - from products through to many different techniques and art styles.

🎨What’s your favourite medium?
My favourite is oils - I love the buttery consistency for the bendability and texture. Most of all that the colour that comes out of the tube is how the colour dries on the canvas - this makes colour mixing and matching much easier.

🎨What’s your favourite subject matter?
Landscapes, flora and fauna. Exploring colour!

🎨Who’s your favourite artist?
My favourite artist always changes. There are way too many to choose just one. When i embarked on my art journey 14 yrs ago I was firstly inspired by Georgia O'Keefe. But I have recently discovered Elizabeth Blair Barber whose exhibition I visited in May 2024 at Donnelly River Mill. I have a very personal family connection to the mill village and it is one of those places that remains a part of your being forever. This has reinspired my desire to capture the country we live on.

Whether you're a local or on the road trip, and need some suggestions on what to try out next, pop into our Bunbury store and ask Sam - she'll have some favourites for you!

✨ARTIST FEATURE: Meet Wanda Comrie! ✨

Wanda Comrie is an Australian contemporary fine artist based in Busselton, WA. Using local flora and domestic scenes as her subject matter, she renders the beauty and complexity of the mundane in a bold and vibrant palette.

What’s your current favourite product at Jacksons?
Such quality products, Moleskin watercolour books are my fave for fun, sketchy watercolours. I love that my work doesn't bleed through and the paper texture is just right.

Favourite pigment to use?
Paynes grey is always on my palette, so versatile and handy to dirty up other colours - but boring…
A tad more exciting: Cadmium Scarlett - a magic colour that I rarely use on its own, but in mixes, it sings.
(we know, Wanda – it’s hard to choose one!)

Who’s one of your favourite artists?
Contemporary - love Adams’ very Australian use of colour. His banksias are to die for. I love a bit of quirk and Lucy is so very clever with all forms, from still life through to animals and landscapes.

What’s some advice you would give to other emerging creatives?
Practice, practice, practice, just keep going. I don’t see myself as terribly talented, but through persistence and much, much practice I’ve built a well regarded art practice and sell work worldwide.

We’re so lucky to have Wanda at our Busselton store, sharing her knowledge and expertise with the South West arts community! Next time you see her in store, give her a wave and have a friendly chat

FAT OVER LEAN 🎨
When oil painting, a general rule of thumb is to paint ‘fat over lean’, where thinned paints are applied as the first layers, before going over with fatter paints that contain more oil.
So what is a ‘lean’ paint and what is a ‘fat’ paint?
When using oil paints, you’ll generally need to use something an additive to change the workability of the paint body.

Let’s break it down further!

Mediums are a liquid that can be mixed into your paint to achieve a variety of effects in your painting; whether you want the brush strokes to be emphasized or reduced, alter drying times, or make the paint smoother to work with.
Linseed oil is an example of a medium that can make the paint smoother to work with whereas alkyd mediums (a synthetic mix of oil resin and alcohol) can make your paint layer dry faster. Mediums tend to contain oil, hence making them your ‘fat’ paint.

On the other hand, solvents are used to break down the oil paint, making it thinner and more of a wash – this is your ‘lean’ paint.

Solvent can also be used to clean down your brushes and palettes. Turpentine and odorless mineral spirits are examples of solvents. They can give off harsh fumes and though there are many solvents that are designed to be less toxic, always use these in a well ventilated area.

Pop into Jacksons to have a chat with one of our friendly staff about what mediums and solvents you can use for your next foray into oil painting!

Dean from Carnaby's Crusaders brought along feathered friends Jedda and Mr White, all the way from Bindoon to Jacksons Mandurah for a special life drawing workshop, led by artist Fiona Rafferty (www.fionarafferty.com).

Participants got to observe the birds close up and personal, working on observational sketches and watercolour paintings.

⭐️ Brilliant news – thanks to Fiona Rafferty and all participants, this workshop raised enough donated funds to cover the build, installation and monitoring of a nest for the Carnaby’s! A blast from the past!
Schmincke brings nostalgia into the present with their Retro line. Stamped with the historical owl print, this line revives the compositions of the vintage HORADAM watercolour sets.

These sets come in a variety of sizes, with metal cases and travel boxes containing tubes and pans. A luxury set is also available, which comes in a walnut-stained wooden box with a porcelain palette and a limited edition da Vinci brush, along with the paints.

As a special highlight, Schmincke have also reissued Cochineal Red - an aristocratic deep shade of red prized in history for its wonderful depth. The original Cochineal Red is a transparent rich red that is obtained from cochineal scale insects and was an important colour for watercolour paintings.

Immerse yourself in the charm of yesteryear with these beautiful sets and colours – available in-store at Balcatta, Cannington, Fremantle and Subiaco, and online.

You may not have heard of water and oil being best friends, but the magic exists with water soluble oil paints.

Winsor & Newton’s Artisan Water Mixable Oils are designed to look and perform just like your buttery traditional oils. A modification to the linseed and safflower oils used in the paint means that it allows water to bind with the oil and emulsify into a stable solution.

This allows you to dilute and thin the oil paint with water, cutting down on exposure to harsh chemicals and solvents like turpentine which is used in traditional oil painting. They’re great for workspaces with little ventilation, such as enclosed studios and classrooms.

These water mixable oils can also still be used with mediums, solvents and varnishes in case you need to alter the finish or viscosity. Not to worry - there’s no compromise to colour saturation, consistency and opacity! 🖌

Clean is easy with water alongside your favourite brush cleaner.

Have a go at your next artwork using these wonderfully convenient oil paints!🎨

For those that have been long time lovers of Sennelier’s oil sticks, there has been an exciting revamp on this classic product.

Now encased in a modern and bold packaging, the new formula has an improved feel. With an extra-fine consistency, these sticks have a smoother and creamier application.

How do you use oil sticks?
