Hypo Awareness: Key to optimising T1D Management
โก https://acbrd.org.au/2024/08/06/can-awareness-of-hypo-symptoms-be-increased-through-brief-structured-education/
Did you know that 25-40% of adults with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) may not recognise early warning signs like hunger and shakiness? This can increase their risk of severe hypos by 60%. The HypoCOMPaSS study aimed to address this by providing brief education, adjusting insulin doses, and optimizing monitoring methods. As a result, adults with T1D were better at recognising hypos and had fewer severe symptoms over 24 weeks, while optimising their blood glucose levels.
Recent analysis by Sรธholm et al., (2023) revealed that 97% of participants initially had an average of 10 different hypo symptoms. Over time, they learned to notice early warning signs, reframe their perception of symptoms, and detect and treat hypos early.
These findings highlight the importance of psychosocial education alongside the medical treatments and technologies for adults with T1D. Increasing awareness of hypo symptoms, and seeing them as useful, is key to avoiding severe hypos.
