Mid Back Pain and Osteopathy

The thoracic spine, the part of the spine that starts just below the neck to half-way down the back, is often a neglected part of the body, which is surprising considering that it is as prone to stiffness as other parts of the spine, but not so surprising since it is a difficult area of the body to stretch.

A stiff thoracic spine can cause pain between the shoulder blades but can also cause excess loading of the lumbar spine, the neck and shoulders, which in turn can lead to pain in these areas as well as headaches.

Like so many other modern-day problems resulting from work, people who spend hours either in the car or sitting poorly in front of computer screens are particularly prone to thoracic stiffness, and the attendant problems this can cause. On a more general level, since the thoracic spine provides much of the rotation and extension of the spine required for athletes, anyone that plays sport is likely to find their movement restricted and performance limited by stiffness in this part of the spine. Injuries in other parts of the body may well follow as a result.

Our Osteopaths will take a thorough history and provide a physical exam. After the assessment, we will develop a plan to correct the underlying problems. Upon examination it is very common to find a lower back problem, or in some cases, a lower neck problem that has helped caused the mid back pain.
Conservative treatments Osteopaths may use are:
• Mobilisation and manipulation to help relieve pain and improve function.
• Massage to help reduce muscle tension and pain and improve blood flow.
• Dry needling promotes healing and pain relief.
• Patient education on correct posture, chair and workplace ergonomics.
• Exercise prescription to stretch and strengthen the muscles of your back, shoulders, and stomach to help increase your flexibility, strength, and balance. Your Osteo may teach you an exercise program so you can do it at home.
• Rehabilitation is very important to prevent the pain from becoming chronic. Many patients are relieved from their mid back pain after a few visits and some patients benefit in maintaining Osteopathy care regularly because it keeps their bodies in optimum condition.
Osteopaths are a key healthcare professional to reduce mid back pain. If you are suffering from pain or know someone with pain, seek help early, the longer delay in starting the treatment, the longer time it takes to recover.
Maybe start by trying this Lying Rotation Stretch
1. Lie on your side on the floor with the knee bent to ninety degrees.
2. Place the arms out in front of you with the palms facing each other.
3. Slowly slide the top hand over the bottom arm toward your chest and across to the shoulder. Allow the trunk to rotate and slowly extend the arm from the shoulder and then the elbow, reaching out with the fingertips and turning the head to look down the line of the arm.
4. Make sure the pelvis and hips are still pointing forward.
5. Reverse this sequence and finish by sliding the palm of the top hand beyond the bottom hand. Repeat slowly and continuously six times then roll over and repeat on the other side.

If you or anyone you know can relate to this post, feel free to book a session with one of our qualified osteopaths :)

Did you know that Osteopaths are trained to assist with soft tissue injuries?
Here's some information to help you better understand how to tackle these tricky injuries and get you back to doing the things you love!
Soft tissue injury is an injury to any of the soft tissues of the body. The most common soft tissues injured are muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These injuries often occur during sports and exercise activities, but sometimes simple everyday activities can cause an injury.
Sprains, strains, and contusions, as well as tendinitis and bursitis, are common soft-tissue injuries. Even with appropriate treatment, these injuries may require a prolonged amount of time to heal.
Soft-tissue injuries fall into two basic categories: acute injuries and overuse injuries.
• Acute injuries are caused by sudden trauma, such as a fall, twist, or blow to the body. Examples of acute injury include sprains, strains, and contusions.
• Overuse injuries occur gradually over time, when an athletic or other activity is repeated so often, areas of the body do not have enough time to heal between occurrences. Tendinitis and bursitis are common soft-tissue overuse injuries.
Treatment will vary depending upon the needs and demands of your injury. Osteopaths will conduct an evaluation which would involve getting your medical history, prior level of activity, mechanism of injury, and your goals for post-recovery. Our osteopathic physical examination will include an assessment of range-of-motion, depending on the nature of the injury, strength, and biomechanics.
Treatment Modalities may include:
• Ice
• Heat
• Joint mobilisation
• Massage
• Trigger Point Therapy
• Dry Needling
• Supportive Taping & Strapping
• Exercise prescription
o Specific Stretching Exercises
o Strengthening Exercises: Localised and Global (eg Core Stability and Adjacent Muscle Groups)
o Proprioceptive Retraining
o Biomechanics Correction
o Function or Sports-Specific Rehabilitation
Soft tissue injury is painful and Osteopathy intervention can play a role in supporting your recovery. It is important to rest the part and give it time to heal but ultimately it is best to get moving as soon as possible to help build resilience in the tissues. Athletes are often reluctant to rest and continue to train despite pain and injury, this can in some cases delay recovery and it is always best to seek advice from a licensed health professional to help reintegrate activity in a graded way.

If you or someone you know might need some support managing any of these conditions, feel free to books consult with one of our experienced team.

So what exactly is osteopathy?

Here at Coffs Coast Osteopathy, we are pretty used to explaining what we do as osteopaths and even though we have been helping people in pain for a long time here on the mid-north coast, I thought I would write a short post to clarify what exactly osteopathy is and address some common misconceptions about our profession.

In Australia osteopaths are university qualified, government registered allied health professionals. We undertake extensive training in anatomy, physiology as well as general health care diagnosis. Osteopaths are trained to provide thorough musculoskeletal and nervous system assessments and can work with you to help you understand and manage your aches and pains.

So what does all that mean In practice?

Osteopaths use hands-on techniques such as massage, stretching, and joint manipulation to help treat a huge variety of issues such as back, neck, and shoulder pain, sports injuries, headaches, and nerve sensitivities such as sciatica. We treat people of all ages and focus on treating the bones, muscles and tissues of the body that support and control movements.

Beyond hands-on techniques, as osteopaths, we can recommend evidence-based clinical exercises and ongoing support such as postural and ergonomic advice to help keep you doing the things you love. Osteopaths treat and think holistically and will often look at how many different factors in your life such as diet and stress may be contributing to your pain or injury rehabilitation and can provide education to work with you to manage your health and wellbeing.

Still not sure what we do exactly? Here’s a quick video that gives a little history of where osteopathy has come from and how we can help!

So there you go, that's a quick summary of what osteopathy is and if you think we might be able to work with you here at Coffs Coast osteopathy feel free to book a consultation with one of our experienced team here https://coffscoastosteopathy.com.au/bookings/

Wondering what your first visit will be like? Here’s a short video to explain that further :)
