Today is the 31st anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander flag, which was presented on 29 May 1992 at the sixth Torres Strait Cultural Festival.
The flag was designed by Bernard Namok and was the winning entry in a design competition. The green panels represent the land, the blue represents the sea and the black lines represent the people of the Torres Strait. The centre of the flag also features a white dhari, a dancerβs headdress, representing Torres Strait Islander culture.

The late Anangu elder, Uncle Bob Randall, told of the story of his old father in the NT who ran in front of a tractor crying out desperately in his language, "Stop, stop! That is my brother you are killing!"
The tractor was mowing down trees on his beloved Country.
The potential to love trees like family is within. It is not just a potential to unlock within, the most natural human perceives Trees as family....
Trees all over the world
are being bulldozed right now.
The Ironbark tree in this photo was one of them.
It grew to selflessly give life to all,
from the Leard State Forest and was destroyed. Allowed by government to be handed over to a coal mining company to get to the fossil fuel deep below. A forest that was a state forest.
A forest that belonged to the children of the future.
May all who care look diligently at where we are investing and spending our money. May all who care help create the cultural change on Earth where our daily spending behaviour is one of the deepest respect to Nature.
Daily behaviour which instinctively supports the Wheel-of-Life,
not the Wheel-of Death. Sustaining a future for all of our children and grandchildren.
(Photo taken in the Leard State Forest before the forest was killed by Whitehaven Coal.)

Thank you for recognition of our Indigenous Connections & Culture.
Great news that the Aboriginal Flag will permanently fly on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The Aboriginal flag was designed and created by artist Harold Thomas, a Luritja man from central Australia and a member of the Stolen Generations. The flag has become a symbol of Aboriginal Australia and holds special legal and political status worldwide.
The design consists of a coloured rectangle divided in half horizontally. With a circle in the centre.
The red in the lower half stands for the earth and the colour of ochre, which has ceremonial significance.
The circle of yellow in the centre of the flag represents the sun.
The top half of the flag is black to symbolise Aboriginal people.
The designer Harold Thomas says the colours of the flag represent the Aboriginal people of Australia and their spiritual connection to the land.
Many sources say the first raising of the Aboriginal flag was on 12 July 1971 but AIATSIS has edited their resources saying the flag was first raised on 9 July in 1971 at a land rights rally in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga, Adelaide, on then-National Aborigines Day. It has become an enduring symbol of Aboriginal strength, representing Aboriginal people and their ongoing spiritual connection to the land.
Please share.

Yandaarra Aboriginal Advisory Committee (YAAC) for Coffs Harbour City Council looking Deadly on top of Yarrila Place the new Council building.
Coffs Harbour City Council's Yandaarra Aboriginal Advisory Committee members went on a hardhat tour of Yarrila Place, our community's new cultural and civic space currently under construction.
"Yarrila" is a Gumbaynggirr word meaning to illuminate or to brighten. The community consultation/engagement process undertaken for the building name showed a very clear desire by the Coffs community to use a Gumbaynggirr word for the new space.
