For those coffee connoisseurs C***a Coffee will be offering their cafe-quality Espress range of coffee, as well as hot and cold refreshments including hot chocolate, chai, homemade lemonade, and iced tea. Look for C***a Coffee's retro sky blue and white caravan located in the Food Court.

100 years of the Towong Cup.

1924 was the first year in which the feature race was called the Towong Cup. The race, over a distance of 1 ¼ miles (2000 m) was won by locally owned Thoroughbred Tom Burke, who also won the Cup in 1925 and 1926.

Tom Burke was bred and raced by William (Billy) Lowden, whose sister, Mary, was Mrs John Pierce (Snr.) Billy Lowden raced horses at Towong every year of his life from age 17 until he died in 1926. His obituary described him as being “passionately fond of horses”, especially Tom Burke, which was “probably the best horse he ever owned.”
Billy Lowden died suddenly after preparing Tom Burke for a race in Albury in 1926. He was “one of the most highly esteemed residents of the Upper Murray.” (Wodonga and Towong Sentinel, 9 April 1926)

Tom Burke was by John Pierce’s champion sire, Costello, from Billy’s mare, Exult.
After the death of his owner, Tom Burke was transferred to George Murrell’s stables in Melbourne where he continued to win flat races, hurdle races, and a steeplechase.
