Looking after Turtles – our culture, our future
Looking after Turtles – our culture, our future Concerns have been raised by NT Ranger groups about the unsustainable use of marine turtles. Such behaviours include the decimation of turtle rookeries by unsustainable egg collection, removing nesting turtles directly from the beach, shooting nesting turtles and hunting too many turtles in foraging grounds. Some of the Indigenous Traditional Knowledge and connection that coastal Aboriginal people have with turtles is reportedly being lost between generations which is considered to also impact marine turtle populations and therefore future cultural use. This documentary, Looking after Turtles – our culture, our future documents several Coastal Indigenous Ranger Groups of the Northern Territory talking about the cultural significance of the Sea Turtle and what must be done to preserve their environment. This project is supported by the Territory Natural Resource Management through funding from the Australian Government's National Landcare Programme, the Northern Territory Government and Sea Turtle Foundation.

#tnrmconf16 gets off to a flying start! As part of a field trip to Northern Territory Wildlife Park participants spent an inspiring morning getting a firsthand look at the innovative and engaging art at the park. They were treated to an insightful tour from the park's artistic curator Jasmine Jan. It was a great opportunity to see how this Darwin organisation has used art and community engagement to spread awareness of critical NRM issues.

Parkinsonia 'Di-Bak' trials
Hayfield Station, in the northern Barkly region of the Northern Territory, recently hosted some trials of a new biological herbicide called Di-Bak. Developed by BioHerbicides Australia. Di-Bak contains three native fungi that are injected into the stem of the woody weed, Parkinsonia eventually killing it. Barkly Landcare are running the trials along with Peter Riikonen of BioHerbicides Australia. Triple P Contracting director Gordon Jackson and staff member, Elvis Green also learned how to use the tools. Check out the video to see how they all got on... Please join us in congratulating Tom Ahfat, the newest graduate from our Indigenous traineeship program. Two years ago Tom had a goal to complete his traineeship with TNRM. He has now fulfilled that and completed a Conservation Land Management qualification. Because of his hard work Tom has been offered employment as a ranger with the Indigenous Land Corporation's Fish River Station, where he trained. Fish River Station is 180,000ha in size and runs along the banks of the Daly River, 200km south of Darwin. When the Daly River region floods each year, the only form of transport is a helicopter. Throughout his traineeship Tom has seen the country in different ways, from floods to the slow drying out. He has been involved in fire, weed and feral animal management, including flora and fauna surveys. Being a ranger also means looking after the homestead infrastructure including 4WDs and quads, upgrading access roads, mending and building fencing and helping to cook meals each evening after a long day’s work. TNRM has watched Tom grow into his role and apply himself every day. His family at Daly River are very proud of his achievements so far, his growing confidence, and his commitment to keep applying his acquired skills and knowledge. Well done Tom! Many thanks go to the Indigenous Land Corporation for partnering with TNRM and helping to ensure the success of Tom's traineeship. TNRM digital storytelling workshop
We hosted our first digital story telling workshop today in Alice Springs to help people doing NRM activities learn how to create and share videos of their great work. Check out our first attempt, which we shot and edited using only a mobile phone this afternoon. We're just beginners but are keen to show what we've learned so far! Let us know what you think, would love to hear your comments or see your videos.

Rhys Arnott, Heytesbury Cattle Companies Rangeland Manager recently sent through this video to us. It shows part of Mona Billabong on VRD station in the middle of the wet season. Mona Billabong is part of a network of Territory Conservation Agreement (TCA) sites that are located throughout the NT. This site is largely excluded from grazing and is subject to intensive weed and feral animal management. The overall goal for Mona Billabong is to improve its ecological value, creating increased habitat for the regions threatened species and also additional farm gate benefits that are the result of better stock control around watering points. For more information on our TCA program visit: http://www.territorynrm.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/TNRM_TCA_Brochure_WebReady.pdf

Great to see some of the Larrakia rangers at TNRM office in Darwin today. They had some fun and also acquired some basics QGIS skills. The rangers want to make their own maps displaying information that’s important to them in managing country. Today they created some maps of the Tree Point area, using satellite images and topographic layers with points, polygons and lines. Looking forward to the next trip to Tree Point from where they will begin to build their map data.
