CHOKING:
On June 2 I received a call from a mum that did a course with me 3 weeks ago.

She said that earlier in the day her child choked badly and he couldn't breathe at all. She said that had she not done the Save-A-Child baby/ toddler first-aid course with me, she is certain he would not have survived.

As horrendous as this situation was, it again shows the importance of child-specific training, as kids are treated differently to adults.

PRIVATE baby/ toddler first-aid course:
- You choose the date, time and place.
- SMALL groups (size depends on location).

PUBLIC baby/ toddler first-aid course:

CHOKING - A free talk that helps save lives.

Every parent should know how to treat a choking child, but many mums and dads have adult-based first-aid knowledge and don't know much about child-specific first aid procedures. This is important, as little ones are treated differently to adults.

Steve, a medical lecturer and former ambulance officer, has delivered over 3000 FREE talks to playgroups, mums groups, child health centres and schools over the last 29 years.

In this exceptionally popular interactive session, Steve will go over the 5 major points on choking that every parent should know, with all procedures carefully demonstrated and explained.

In my first aid courses, I discuss automatic defibrillators, as they are now an integral part of the resuscitation process, particularly with so many now being available in the community.

These amazing machines literally save lives each and every day and it’s always of concern to me that many of those I teach are still not aware of them and how easy they are to use.

I often see them in the community centres in which I hold public courses, in shopping centres, schools and even sometimes in the park when walking the dog!

It was interesting seeing this one over the weekend when I popped in to buy a coffee at McDonald’s. It was displayed so prominently right by the front counter that anybody placing an order would easily have been aware of it’s presence, which is exactly what we need, as this is what gets people talking, which creates more awareness!

Do you regularly notice defibs in your local community? Would you be confident to use one if you had to?

Burns and scalds!
I’ve been running baby/toddler first aid courses for nearly 30 years. I’m very passionate about my work, as I have seen the difference that proper knowledge can make in a medical emergency.

One of the topics that I always make a big fuss about in every course I teach is burns and scalds.

Not only are these one of the most common of all the childhood medical emergencies, but they are responsible for an unbelievable amount of pain and suffering, that often goes on for years, not months.

What concerns me most is the fact that water boils at 100° but a small child will suffer a severe burn, requiring painful surgery, in less than a second when the water temperature hits 55°! What this means is that even a “cool” cup of tea or coffee can change a child’s life.
I stress this to all those I teach. It’s not just boiling water that poses a threat!

Do yourself and your children a favour. Jump onto Google right now, touch the “images” button and type in something such as “scald on child”. Look at the pictures.

And keep all hot (and even "not-so-hot") drinks away from children!

This is really good info for parents worried about food allergies.

If you have a food allergy you may be worried about giving your baby food (starting solids) 👶It's a big step moving from only feeding breastmilk or formula, but one you must take at around 6 months, not before 4 months, when the baby is ready.

Parents and carers managing food allergies themselves or in another child (not the baby) may feel anxious and fearful, rather than excited, however, it is important not to delay the introduction of foods even though you feel anxious. Regularly serving the common allergy-causing foods (twice a week) before the baby turns one helps reduce the risk of developing food allergy. If your baby does have an allergic reaction to a food, stop giving the baby that food and make an appointment to see your GP. If your baby has any signs of anaphylaxis, call Triple Zero for an ambulance.

About 20% of babies will still develop a food allergy but the majority will not.

If you don’t have a medic Alert or similar, please make a point of getting one sooner rather than later. A product like this speaks for you when you cannot speak for yourself, and can literally mean the difference between life and death in an emergency.

Whether you have asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, any other medical condition or any form of severe allergy, it is absolutely essential that you own a medical alert or similar product!
