R U OK? A Simple Question, Every Day.

Today we recognise the importance of R U OK? Day, a national day of action reminding us all to check in with those around us. This year’s theme highlights that life happens every day, and so should the question, “Are you OK?”

With 72% of Australians reporting higher levels of distress, it’s more crucial than ever to look out for one another—not just today, but all year round. Asking “Are you OK?” can make a significant difference, helping people feel more connected, supported, and cared for.

Let’s not wait for a special day to ask the question. Check in with the people in your life regularly. A simple conversation can make all the difference.

This week is Speech Pathology Week and we wanted to highlight the essential role of speech pathologists, particularly within our services at Royal Rehab LifeWorks. Our dedicated team is committed to supporting and enhancing communication for all individuals.

Communication takes many forms—spoken, signed, digital, or written. It’s more than just words; it bridges gaps, fosters understanding, and builds meaningful connections. Everyone communicates differently, and our goal is to help each person express themselves in their unique way.

In Australia, approximately 1.2 million people have communication support needs. Our speech pathologists are here to ensure that every voice is heard, and every message is conveyed.

Let’s celebrate the incredible work of our speech pathologists and the impact they make every day.

National Pain Week is Australia’s annual event dedicated to raising awareness about chronic pain. It takes place during the last week of July each year, and in 2024, it will run from July 22nd to July 28th. With 3.6 million Australians living with chronic pain, Royal Rehab LifeWorks Brisbane acknowledges the challenges they face and the barriers they encounter. Chronic pain often leads to a cycle of stigma, isolation, and mental health challenges.

Let us break this cycle and advocate for all Australians living with chronic pain to receive Triple AAA standards of care: Awareness, Accessibility, and Affordability.

At Royal Rehab LifeWorks Brisbane, our specialised occupational therapy, exercise physiology, and positive behaviour support teams provide comprehensive care and education to those who need support.

Let's empower those with chronic pain to break free from silence and fear. Together, we can transform lives and build a supportive community.

This month, we are proud to recognise NAIDOC Week – a time to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week not only highlights the rich heritage of Australia’s First Nations people, but also serves as a reminder of their ongoing contributions to society. This year, the theme is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’ – which is about the celebrating the endurance and resilience of Indigenous people and culture.

At Royal Rehab LifeWorks, we acknowledge the importance of cultural diversity and inclusivity. This NAIDOC Week, we encourage everyone to take part in events and activities that promote understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures. It’s a time to learn, reflect, and celebrate the stories and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Let’s join together to honour NAIDOC Week and continue our commitment to reconciliation, equality, and unity – within the Royal Rehab Group and beyond.

We are excited to introduce exercise physiology services at Royal Rehab LifeWorks Brisbane in July!

Exercise physiology uses physical activity and exercise to improve your overall health and wellbeing, reduce pain, and help you function better after an injury, illness, or surgery. It is important for rehabilitation, assisting with regaining strength and function, increasing flexibility, increasing cardiovascular fitness and energy levels and reducing the likelihood of falls.

Our exercise physiologists create personalised exercise plans to help meet individual goals in health and wellbeing.

We are now taking bookings for exercise physiology in Brisbane. To make a referral, call 1800 966 209 or complete the referral form on our website.

Today is Global MND Awareness Day, an opportunity to raise awareness and understanding of MND and the impact on those living with MND, their caregivers and communities.

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive degenerative disease. It affects the nerves causing muscle weakness and paralysis.

Every day, 2 Australians are diagnosed with MND, and every day 2 Australians die from MND.

In 90-95% of cases of MND, the cause is unknown. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is 2 to 3 years.

We use today to raise awareness of MND and to recognise and honour those living with MND, their caregivers, communities and healthcare professionals that support them.
