1 Day Painting Workshops with renowned multi award winning artist David Giles.
“To create paintings you love, all you have to do, is learn to accept yourself, learn to accept your voice, learn to accept your individual expression. This means letting go of judgement about yourself and your art. When you do this and allow your deepest inner child out to play, she will delight you with paintings that you love because they have come from your deepest inner self. Easier said than done, but with a little guidance you can begin this journey to heal and accept yourself through expressing yourself creatively from your inner child.
Want to embark on such a journey ? Join me for one of my workshops. Experience the joy of painting from your heart!

PALIMPSEST PAINTINGS
:painting in layers to create a sense of mystery, secrets and complexity
Palimpsest is a re-editing process in which the existing layers of objects or traces are covered or removed, partially or completely.
Most often refers to ancient manuscripts but can be applied to paintings that are layered with previous layers partially covered.
In this course we will use markmaking and colour field techniques to create palimpsest paintings that create a sense of mystery, of something hidden or lurking beneath the surface.
By working in a palimpsest process you can create a sense of complexity and layering and hopefully feel free to be experimental, free and spontaneous in your approach to each layer of painting.
By working in layers it becomes easier for the you to work freely with less fear and anxiety knowing that the current layer will be partially covered so you can feel less attached to the immediate outcome as you progress with each painting.
In the workshop we will work on several layers on two canvases. So you can work on each while the the other is drying. (Bring a hairdryer if you wish to speed up drying)
You will need to provide your own canvases as well as paints and brushes. I can bring good quality canvases for you or you can bring your own. Recommend 75x75cm or larger but up to you entirely. We provide easels tables palettes and jars.

Term 3, 2024 course contents
Palimpsest: painting in layers to create a sense of mystery, secrets and complexity
Each session we will work on several layers (at least two but could be more) which may or may not be resolved that session. If not resolved you can continue the following week. Hopefully however, you will have several finished paintings by the end of the term.
You will need to provide your own canvases as well as paints and brushes. We sell good quality canvases at the studio or you can bring your own. We provide easels tables palettes and jars.
All participants can join the Freedom School Social Site private page where you can view a weekly on line “demo” by David Giles of the palimpsest painting process - of creating a painting with multiple layers.
Each “demo” will include several videos - one of each layer. You can also share your work and seek feedback on the social site.
Each session will commence with a short “live” demo by David Giles and conclude with a supportive and encouraging show and tell.
All participants can also exhibit in the end of term Freedom School Art Awards Exhibition with total prize pool value of more than $9500.
I have been teaching painting as a “creative therapy process” for nearly 30 years with more than a thousand people participating in my programs over that time.
Whilst many have gone on to become multi award winning artists my main goal has always been to help people use creative processes to connect with their inner creative self and learn to become more free, authentic and fulfilled in their lives.
As well as running my own private programs I have trained and worked for many years as an arts worker/mentor in the mental health field, working in various “creative therapy” processes based on positive psychology and transpersonal approaches.
In this course I bring all this experience together, along with my success as a multi award winning exhibiting artist, to support you to use art to connect more deeply with your inner self, feel the bliss of pure creativity, and learn, through painting, to open your heart, let go and embrace the divine within, embrace the mystical, the wonderful and the enigmatic, “Inner Creative Self’.
I hope you will join me on this journey of self - discovery.
As an artist I have won 20 art awards and commendations and held more than 50 solo exhibitions. I have shown in New York, Paris, Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and throughout regional WA. I have completed residencies and/or retreats in Bali, Esperance, Margaret River, Rockingham, Beverley, Nannup and Myalup and been the recipient of several grants from ArtsWA. I have published numerous books about my arts practice and featured in several art magazines, art books and film documentaries including by the ABC. I regularly donate paintings for charity auctions and exhibitions.
As an art teacher I have taught at Challenger TAFE, Claremont School of Art, Hakea Prison, Armadale Society of Artists, Roleystone Neighbourhood Centre as well as my own art school. I have taught more than a thousand people with many going on to become multi award winning artists.
As a gallerist I currently represent 50 artists at my two galleries including ten artists in residence at Studio 11.
I have a depth of experience in other arts roles including Director of the Victoria Park Centre for the Arts, Arts Officer for City of Rockingham and City of Stirling and arts and culture consultant for the City of Fremantle and City of Albany.
I have also been curator of more than a hundred exhibitions including numerous art awards for the City of Bayswater and Town of Victoria Park and the “Noongar Artists” exhibition for the City of Fremantle.
I am very proud of the work I have done as an arts worker in the disability and mental field working for DADDA WA and NEAMI National, with historically significant exhibition outcomes at Heathcote Gallery and the Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery.
