Something you should know about trauma.
It can be tricky….
It can be in hiding for years.
While it’s in hiding, it can gather strength, it can join forces with other trauma while it lurks around waiting……
What is it waiting for? Just a trigger, any old trigger really.
A stressful situation, an agitation, a surprise, a birthday a comment, a setback, nothing specific sometimes.
Or it might be that you’ve felt something gathering momentum inside you, an unsettling feeling, not quite right..
Then it shows up, no warning, uninvited, often there seems to be no reason either.
How does it show up?
It’s a bottomless list.
Some of the common ways: anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, mood swings, headaches, chronic fatigue, detachment, sleep problems, far too many to list here.
And how do we cope, what can we do to mitigate these symptoms.
The answer lies within our body.
Trauma is stored energy within our body that needs resolving and discharging. Through the breath and connecting with our physical body the process can begin.

Breathwork and the trigger…..
Tonight I was fortunate to listen to a presentation by an ex policeman, Paul Litherland. The subject was teenagers and social media. He is a very skilled presenter and shared many practical skills to navigate our children’s safety on line….
I came home feeling heavy, sad, slightly distressed and with the potential to react in a non constructive manner.
Luckily for me- and my teenage son- I chose to pause….. I closed my eyes, breathed into my body and noticed my throat and chest were tight. I kept my awareness on my breath and my throat and then the tears came. What I actually felt was helpless. Sad and helpless that I might not be able to protect my son from poor decisions he may make or poor decisions of others that may affect him.
Staying tuned into my breath, I was able to regulate myself and feel a sense of calm.
Now I am ready to have a different, more constructive conversation with my son- albeit, a potentially uncomfortable one…

The chemistry of our body, and the hormones we are creating, when we are in a state of stress or anxiety is a completely different body chemistry to when we are in a state of calm and relaxation.
This change is an unconscious body reaction governed by our Nervous system.
In Somatics we use awareness, our breath and sometimes body moment to be able to create change in our body chemistry to produce the hormones of health, wellness and healing.
Stress hormones of Adrenalin, Cortisol and Norepinephrine are great when we are ‘getting chased by the tiger’ (so to speak) but these are not the hormones we want running through our body for wellness.
We can learn to regulate our nervous system to allow our body to create hormones like Dopamine, Oxytocin, Seratonin and Endorphins. These hormones help our body heal, reduce inflammation and can regulate our mood.
These principles are a strong focus in Vicki’s counselling and kinesiology sessions.
