So.. what happened to art remedy?
For those of you interested, I thought Iād give a little update on what Iāve been up to. At the end of last year, I finished my Bachelor of Psychology and decided to pursue a personal dream of sailing around the world.
In February, I joined my friends in Malaysia to help them fix up their boat. The intention was to spend 3 weeks fixing the boat up, then hit the water for Indonesia. Little did we know 3 weeks would turn into 4 months.
After months in a boatyard and an uncertain launch date, the crew decided to split for a much needed two week break.
My friend and I wound up on the beautiful island of Tioman, where we made good friends, one of which managed an abandoned resort which has sort of become a second home.
Afterwards, I decided to continue with my travels and found myself in Sri Lanka completing my yoga teacher training and then driving a tuk tuk cross country from the coast to the mountains.
Now Iām back on Tioman Island, this time with more friends from the boat. Our new launch date is in a week and we will be heading to Sumatra to see the orangutangs (which I learnt about in during a behavioural and learning psychology course in my second year of uni); but alas, with boat life, who knows!
All in all, it feels full circle to be back in Tioman, and looking back, the past few months have been a beautiful detour from the original plan to take.
Iāve learnt a lot, grown a lot, and been inspired in many ways by many people Iāve come across.
Iāve been playing with the idea of someday creating an art retreat of my own (and I canāt help but feel bubbly inside when I do), but for now, my heart is still with the high seas š¤
are your definitions of success sabotaging your own happiness? I wonder what would happen if we all reassessed what success meant to us, particularly given the current state of our planet, and an environment in which we are taught more is better.

Are pottery classes really just about making cups?
I truly believe the answer to that question is no.
Art is not only a fun way for children to express themselves, but it is also a beautiful tool we can use to facilitate healthy child development.
Pottery teaches children that whilst they may not be in charge of much at this stage of life, with clay they can be the creator and commander of something. This process empowers children to know they are competent and capable of making change, instilling the belief system āI can do it!ā
Throughout our workshops our kids also get to know Bradley, a special octopus whoās magic only works if we Care, Share and Respect one another.
He has three eyes which watch the room and he offers our students three guiding choices in moments where they may be straying from his magic principles.
If a child is able to get through our workshops without needing more than 3 of his guiding choices, his magic hat opens and he gifts them a treasure he has collected on his adventures.
This is a positive take on the whole 3 warnings system, one that rather than threatens a child to make the right decision, empowers them to.
This is a simple concept you can implement at home to help your child manage their behaviour in a positive way. For more information on how, head to www.artremedy.com.au
Throughout the ages of approximately 5-11 children are developing unconscious belief systems about their capabilities.
We are very excited to now be working with schools to help children develop their self-confidence and competency by providing them with the opportunity to acquire new skills and master increasingly complex tasks.

Art allows your thoughts to come forth via a different route
The left and right hemispheres of the brain specialise in verbal and visual function, combining the use of both integrates the brain.
Words from a beautiful 8 year old client of mine, (we were having a conversation about dealing with loss and what happens to people when they die): āyou know what I believe, I believe for you thereās a you in the sky, for me thereās a me in the sky and for everyone else they have a them in the sky.ā
What a beautiful way to put it, it is a true privilege to learn from children and the magical way they see this life.

Beautiiifulll art at the Tarnanthi Exhibit.
I particularly loved this painting by Kaylene Whiskey. It is done on an old SA tourist attraction sign and illustrates the kungkarangkalpa tjukurpa ~ seven sisters creation story.
the painting illustrates Kungka kunpu ~ strong women, and how they support each other and love to have fun together.
I canāt even explain why I love it so much, but Iāll try.
1. How Wonder Woman shouts out Dolly Parton and her coat of many colours - one of my favourite songs with such an important message
2. I love when worlds collide, combining traditional indigenous knowledge with pop culture, old and new etc. itās a reminder we arenāt all so different after all
3. The disco ball, cat woman in funky boots, and flag one piece . Itās just so full of fun. sometimes we just need a reminder that lifeās actually meant to be fun!
A question Iāve been really liking lately is ~ Are you making yourself miserable on the pursuit of happiness?
100% just recommend going to check out the exhibit yourself if youāre looking for something to do in Adelaideš
Meet Bradley, a special member of the Art Remedy team.
Bradley is an octopus who offers three guiding choices to help our less settled kids stay on track during our sessions. If our kids can make it through the session without needing his help more than three times, he lets them pick a treasure out of his head he has collected on his adventures.
Iāve used him in clinic with my kids who struggle to sit still and stay on task, and it has been amazing seeing the transformation exercising their own willpower and ability to make a choice has had.Ā
The good news is that this is something parents can easily recreate at home. So.. what do you need? Whilst children can most definitely come in for sessions with me to create their very own creature that helps them make their decisions, if this concept is something you would like to recreate at home, it does not have to require a kiln.
You could use a teddy bear who sits on top of a box which holds special treasures instead.
Treasures donāt have to be big things, I use shells or crystals I have collected, sometimes stickers or special gel pens. You can even suggest to your child that they can hold the teddy to help themselves hear what decision their heart wants to make.
I think youāll be surprised to see that with a little patience, kids are very capable of naturally making the right choices. They donāt have to be made to feel inadequate or unacceptable to do so. They can be empowered to!
Another day at Art Remedy: working on centring clay so our little ones can learn how to centre themselves.
Today we worked finding our inner centre. Connecting to our senses by potting with our eyes closed and using visualisation techniques to find our centre line and grounding earth star.
While potting, the shape of the clay reflects any internal imbalance our little clients may be experiencing when focus strays. This helps them understand how their internal emotions may be influencing their actions in a visual way.
Ruled by the right hemisphere of the brain it is often challenging for little ones not to be controlled by their impulses.
At times our client wanted to stray from the task, however, with gentle guidance she was able to stay focused on creating a centred form! This was an empowering experience for her, as she learnt she was able to remain in charge to accomplish her goal of creating her very own cup (she was so proud of it!), and did not have to be a slave to her immediate impulses.
Feeling very grateful to do what I do š
today at art remedy: charms and beads in the making, drying in a crystal grid for some magical worry beads to help our little client.
Why is art remedy great for kids who struggle with low self-esteem and bullying?
when children get the opportunity to work with clay, they are the creator and commander of it. it is an empowering process as they learn to be the master of something, rather than the slave. It may also be the only time in their lives where they get to be completely IN CHARGE and there is nothing wrong with that. This process, in turn helps a child develop their sense of self efficacy and self esteem.
Good news! We have expanded our availability, appointments are now available Thursdays-Sundays.

redefining trauma. āwhy are animals in the wild though threatened routinely, rarely traumatised?ā
ā£Dr Peter A. Levine normalises the symptoms of trauma, stating that people are often traumatised by seemingly ordinary experiences.
the body holds memories without words; it holds feelings, emotions and reflexes of a moment.
But just like the tiger, we have an instinctual capacity to heal through a heightened awareness of our bodily sensations.
Blind folded pottery is a therapeutic intervention used at art remedy to help our clients manage their anxiety and process confronting emotions.
Sometimes, our minds can continue on so much it feels completely overwhelming and all we want is an off button.
By focusing solely on what it is you feel between your finger tips, and learning to channel your internal tension into the clay, blind folded pottery shows us how to practice conscious awareness.
Through this process, we learn to say yes to feeling our big scary emotions, and afterwards, those same emotions no longer appear so big and so scary.
An important part of making a pothead is what we do with it after it has been made.
This is my inner brat Britney. Sheās a facet of my inner child/teenager. Creating her allowed me to acknowledge the judgement I had been placing on myself and better understand this part of me by getting to know HeR story.
The story of someone who despite the pretty pearls around her neck and her very pink rose-tinted world, felt her planet to be a bit cruel still for taking from her what she loved most.
The art remedy however, did not end there. But continues on daily through the process of potting her up with a plant.
In caring for her so she grows, I learn daily to exercise my patience, and the process of checking what she may need, be it eggshells in her soil, or watering, reminds me to be tender with this part of me rather than to shut her out as soon as she āflares upā.
Through kinesiology we will be able to discover not only who it is you need to make, but what we need to do with them after, so you can learn be in deeper harmony with yourself.
You may have to pot your pot up with a plant, or smash it or gift it etcā¦.,whatever it is, your body will tell us because it WaNTs to heal, it may just need a bit of guidance.
making a pothead at Art Remedy, part 1
We all have our inner freaks, parts of ourselves we may be rejecting, that are so longing to be seen. At Art Remedy you may be guided through the healing process of using clay to embrace yourself on a deeper level (albeit shameful, embarrassing/ānerdyā) and shine the light of awareness on a perhaps hidden facet of you.
These are two of my personal freaks, Gladys, the librarian with a closet gambling addiction, and Kurtis, the mamas boy with bad breath and a good heart.
Much of our work at Art Remedy is based on the ancient Chinese wisdom of the five elements, still commonly used in Chinese medicine today to heal bodily ailments.
The five elements reflect the flow of energy, believed in ancient times to be controlled by the planets in our solar system (hence why in Chinese the planets are named after the elements).
This is a simplified version of the chart but amongst many other things, each element corresponds to different emotions.
You see, the idea here is that just like joy, grief and anger are just as meaningful and meant to be emotions. There is nothing wrong with you feeling them. And there is no need to rush from one feeling to the next, after all it is cyclical. The problems however, occur when we get stuck in any of these phases.
A secret to overcoming emotional blockages is looking at the å
cycle. å
in Chinese means to overcome. So for example, metal cuts wood, and water puts out fire, they āovercomeā it.
The same applies for the emotions associated. For example, a person overcome with and feeling unable to move out of anger or resentment, may need some grief or sorrow.
Perhaps they have not allowed themselves to feel such feelings. And the deep hurt they may be denying needs to be expressed for wood to be in harmony. When in harmony, wood may manifest instead as assertiveness and decisiveness.
Thereās a whole lot more to share in regards to the five elements, but I hope this was a nice introduction to those who arenāt familiar with it. Like the post and comment if youād like me to touch more on the five elements in the future. Or even feel free to send me a scenario of someone stuck in a certain emotion and we can deduce together what emotion they may need for balance.
Kinesiology helps us get to the root of a problem by providing us with an insight into subconscious thoughts and beliefs by accessing information from our neural substrate.
Our neural substrate holds our memories, information on mental, emotional, physical and energetic states and affects our muscle tension.
The information gathered from muscle testing allows us to determine what our bodies need in order to be balanced, enhances our self awareness and empowers us to make conscious decisions.

I truly believe that what we donāt express, we store. After all, Newtonās Law states, energy can neither be created or destroyed, only transformed.
At art remedy, we learn to allow what comes up, to come out, no matter how much clay we need to whack, punch or stomp!
Lucky for us, your body will tell us just what it needs to heal.
At art remedy, depending on how our first session together unfolds, we may hold off using art as a theraputic intervention right away, delaying it until the second or third session. This is because itās important we donāt rush the process. Much like the Chinese idiom ē²äŗŗęøč±” demonstrates.
The idiom refers to only having a surface-level understanding of something, or to only understand part of something but think you have the whole story.Ā Literally, it means, blind people touching an elephant.
The story goes as such: A long time ago, there were four blind villagers who wanted to know what the mysterious new creature passing through the village, an elephant, was. But as they couldnāt see, all they could do was use their hands to touch. The first villager touched the elephants tusks and said āoh I know! an elephant is like a massive carrotā. The second, felt the elephants ears and remarked āno, no, no, youāve got it all wrong, an elephant is like a large floppy fan!ā The third, felt the elephantās leg and the fourth, its tail. None of them could agree as to what an elephant was, and all were adamant the others got it wrong.
This story shows us that it is only when we take a patient, holistic approach that we can truly understand a whole picture. Unlike the villagers and the elephant, we need to be across all of the unique aspects that make you, you. A deeper sense of the bigger picture will allow us to facilitate the therapeutic intervention that is the most powerful for you.
As my dad would say: āmy body is my buddy, my buddy is my body!ā
how many of us are stuck in chronic doing? A lil reminder itās ok for us to just be human-beings not doings š

Hello and welcome to Art Remedy!
At Art Remedy we offer Neuro-Linguistic Kinesiology and specialise in using art as a tool to help you move through your emotions and release emotional blockages.
So what IS Kinesiology??
Kinesiology blends ancient knowledge from traditional Chinese medicine and the Western understanding of anatomy to form a unique complementary therapy.
Through muscle testing we identify imbalances and stresses on your body. This bio-feedback allows a deeper understanding of your emotions and enables us to provide the treatment needed to restore balance to the body.
Kinesiology is built on the basis that your body knows what it needs to heal itself, all we need to do is interpret what your body is telling you and remove the blocks that prevent your natural state of balance.
For those especially, who may not be as comfortable verbally expressing themselves, creativity is the spoken language of the heart and art remedy may just be the right fit for you.
Keep your eyes peeled, we are set to open our doors at the end of June!
