We couldn’t be prouder of the students at St Thomas Aquinas Primary School

Through Geelong Gallery’s mural program, students at St Thomas Aquinas worked alongside First Nations artists and cultural educators, Norm Stanley and Nikki McKenzie to design and create this collaborative mural—an important and lasting legacy for their school.

Norm Stanley provides this insight into the program process:
“The question we asked: What connects you to Wadawurrung Country?
Some of the answers were: Hills, beaches, trees, ocean, rivers, and family.
From the top [of the mural] we have the ocean with a touch of trees in the form of leaves.
The yellow running across is the coastline, the middens that are such an important Ancestral connection.
The red is the gathering of classes and their families which all belong to each other, connected as the School community.
The blue is the river, the Barwon that runs around the hills.
And the Green at the bottom are the hills of this place we call home. are stencilled to represent themselves, and their connection to the land.”

Congratulations to all involved in creating this mural. It is an important visual reminder of the meaningful connections the students formed celebrating the rich culture, knowledge and experience of our First Nations people.

Thanks to Creative Futures for funding this important program

🖤💛❤️ Over the last few years, we have been working with passionate staff of Kardinia College who are committed to creating change. Together we have been working towards creating ongoing Cultural Education programs across all year levels.
This year, we are seeing the planning and hard work come together as we put the programs into place and start delivering them.

I started with Grade 4 students as an "Artist in Residence" sharing Storytelling and the importance of sharing story.
How the birds got their colours was the focus story and the students have been creating their own Artwork to tell that story.
Last week I returned to share "Dance and Human Movement" with approximately 150 Kinder (3+4 year olds) and Prep students. I shared dance movements, music, beats and rhythm with all classes, helping them to understand the connection between Storytelling, Dance and Music.
Today my session was with Year 9 Humanities. The subject "Researching the Modern World" and looking at perspectives of modern Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues such as Land Rights, Right to vote and Citizenship.
This is just the beginning of what will be an amazing journey of development around embedding Aboriginal Cultural Education into the curriculum.
A few more sessions this week and many more locked in over the next few months.

Creating change takes time, it'll take even longer if we don't work together.

We are Wurri-Ki Culture 🖤💛❤️

As our commitment to National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week continues, today and across Term 2 & 3, students from St Thomas Aquinas Primary School in Norlane are collaborating with First Nations artists and educators Norm Stanley and Nikki McKenzie from Wurri – Ki Culture and Gallery Educators in a series of workshops to design and create a mural at their school.

This project is an ideal opportunity to provide meaningful connections for all students to celebrate the rich and thriving culture, knowledge and experience of our First Nations people.
