Women's Agenda has highlighted AAPi's calls for enhanced psychological support for mothers this Birth Trauma Awareness Week, with AAPi Executive Director Tegan Carrison, and member Lucy Frankham, quoted in this article.
“Unaddressed psychological issues resulting from birth trauma can have profound negative implications for new parents and their children. We are calling on the government to provide the appropriate levels of care this vulnerable group deserves.” Tegan said.

This week is Birth Trauma Awareness Week 2024 with the theme of Informed Consent (permission). The week aims to raise awareness, drive policy change, and prevent trauma.
Following the recent publication of the first global Perinatal Trauma Prevention Guidelines, AAPi's Executive Director Tegan Carrison is featured in this Byron Coast Times article calling for increased Medicare-rebated sessions for perinatal women.
“For anyone with serious/complex problems, research shows that 40 sessions are considered the optimal level of treatment.
“Clients are being forced to stretch out their sessions for issues such as anxiety, PTS related to childbirth, adjustment to parenthood, changes in partner relationships, difficulty bonding, and suicidal ideation. These
issues require ongoing care.”
Psychologist and AAPi member Lucy Frankham is also quoted in the article, noting that the parliamentary inquiry attracted more than 4,000 submissions, however “Despite this recent attention, many people remain unaware of the profound and lasting impacts that birth trauma can have on women and their families, and this extends to healthcare providers, policymakers, and support networks”.

This Birth Trauma Awareness Week, Director Carly Dober spoke on 2SM News regarding AAPi's calls for 40 rebated psychology sessions for women needing support as a result of birth trauma.
"We know that one in four mothers experience some PTSD symptoms after birth, and one in 16 meet all the criteria for having PTSD. And what we know as well is that early intervention is key. We can get mothers feeling better so they're able to look after themselves, their baby, and to participate fully in their community," she said.

AAPi Director Katrina Norris is quoted extensively in an online article in the Medical Journal of Australia, criticising recent WorkCover changes in Victoria.
These changes include limits on compensation for mental health injuries.
Dr Norris said the eligibility requirements for mental injury claims are not in line with national standards or best practice for occupational health and safety, nor are they aligned with current mental health assessment and treatment standards.
She also said it places a higher burden on GPs.
“Under Victoria’s WorkCover, a psychological diagnosis needs to be provided by a medical practitioner (GP or other medical doctor). The new requirement is for the doctor to provide this diagnosis within 28 days of the claim being lodged.
“This places a higher burden on GPs as the initial treating doctor to assess and accurately diagnose their patient in a short period of time, while also coordinating more appropriate and focused treatment; or to refer on to a psychiatrist with availability (a rare find in the current climate).”
Dr Norris argues for a greater role for psychologists.
“A solution would be a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach that allows the primary treating party to engage those they believe to be best placed to assess, diagnose and support the individual.”
