‘What is our future?’: the Nauru detention centre was empty. Now 100 asylum seekers are held there The number of asylum seekers at the centre has been slowly growing, with fears they will spend years trapped on the island
Victorian Labor’s decision yesterday to approve gas extraction near the 12 Apostles was devastating. The climate science is clear: there can be no more coal and gas if we want to limit the very worst impacts of climate change.
Labor know this - which makes their decision all the more shameful.
We cannot allow our future, our kids’ future, to continue to be sold out.

While there are no refugees currently held in Nauru, and the Albanese Government has begun to implement the change to permanent visas for people who were granted temporary protection in Australia, there are several issues in Australia’s refugee policy which are still in need of address. Among them, is that up to 12,000 people remain in limbo after their applications for asylum were rejected in what the current government states was a flawed and unfair system.
This forum will explore the situation for these people and the action that needs to be taken to provide them with safety.
Speakers:
- Sr Brigid Arthur AO
Long time asylum seeker advocate and social justice activist, and co-founder of the
Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project in Melbourne.
- Ben Goulding
Senior Lawyer from Refugee Legal, Australia’s largest provider of free specialist legal
assistance to people seeking asylum, refugees and disadvantaged migrants.
- Geetha Ramachandran
Asylum seeker with lived experience of the Fast Track system.

2022 has been a massive year for the Geelong Greens. We've run a federal and state election, seen our local candidate, elected to state parliament, and celebrated our 30th anniversary as a political party. We have more elected representatives at every level of government than ever before.
The Greens remain very much a grassroots organisation. Our successes would not have been possible without our members' and supporters' hard work and dedication.
However you celebrate it, we can be proud of the year's work we've put in and the progress made.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy 2023!
Tune in to watch the opening of the 60th Parliament of Victoria. Our new members, including Sarah Mansfield - Greens for Western Vic, are currently being sworn in.

Western Victoria has just elected Sarah Mansfield - Greens for Western Vic to represent them in the upper house 💚
Sarah is a local GP and has served as councillor for the City of Greater Geelong since 2017. She's committed to listening to the community and taking action together on the climate crisis, affordable housing, and creating an equal society for all.
This is a historic result - we’re heading into the next Parliament with a doubled party room and the first regional Victorian Greens state MP. Thank you to everyone who voted Green!

I'm so excited to announce I'll be the Greens' lead candidate for Western Victoria at the upcoming state election.
As a GP, councillor and parent, I'm driven to build a healthier and more sustainable community. I'm proud of what we've achieved since being elected to the City of Greater Geelong in 2017. Together, we've set ambitious climate and waste targets, committed to social housing initiatives, and pushed for safer active transport routes. I care deeply about my community, and I will continue to work hard as a councillor while I am in that role.
However, over my time in local government I've become increasingly frustrated. Our region is being left behind, and we need strong action at state level to achieve the necessary major improvements in public transport, affordable housing, rental affordability, and healthcare we deserve. We must tackle the climate crisis by replacing coal and gas with 100% renewable energy by 2030, and protect our precious 12 Apostles from gas drilling.
Western Victoria is one of the most desirable places to live in Australia - and I'm proud to call it home for me and my young family. But without urgent action we face critical threats to our livability.
It is an honour to be representing the Greens' at this election, and I thank our members for their support. Together, along with our community, we can make a difference this November.
I'll be setting up a separate campaign page, and keep this one for council-related posts, so please jump over and follow it! https://www.facebook.com/SarahMansfieldGreens/

The climate bill has passed the lower house with Greens support.
You wanted us to push Labor to go further & faster on climate, and to improve & pass this Bill. That’s what we did.
The Greens ensured that the target is a floor not a ceiling, and that the Bill is “Dutton proofed” from future Governments.
We also made it harder to fund coal & gas by applying the target to many government agencies, and ensured greater transparency & accountability on the Climate Change Authority which will advise on climate targets.
Disappointingly, Labor teamed up with the Liberals to vote against Greens amendments to increase the target to 75% and to stop new coal & gas mines.
This is a climate parliament, the only thing standing in the way of more action is Labor and their fossil fuel donors.
We will ramp up our fight to stop Labor opening coal and gas mines.
Because it is the battle of the century and the battle of our lives and we need everyone to be in it. ✊
A fabulous way to spend tomorrow!
National Tree Day 🌳 is this Sunday, and we’re getting behind it by holding a local planting day from 9:30am on the Ted Wilson Trail at the rear of Haines Reserve, 1A Wilks Street in Hamlyn Heights.
Trees are an essential part of our environment, cooling our streets, absorbing carbon, providing habitat and bringing beauty to our city, which is why we planted more than 2,700 trees in 2020-21.
All members of the community are welcome and encouraged to attend this event. Details 👉 geelong.link/PlantingDay
We’ve also launched a new Urban Forest Dashboard to share data about the more than 165,000 trees that we manage in parks, reserves and streets.
The Urban Forest Dashboard features a map of Greater Geelong, and you can zoom in to learn more about any city-managed tree – including species, age, health and size.
