SELF DEFENSE & COMMON SENSE & KORYU
In the kata of the various koryu bujutsu (jujutsu, Houjutsu etc) there is a "system of ideas" intended to explain the movements, especially one's based on a set of independent principles on which the practice of the kata is founded.
Several of these traditions e.g. Yagyu Shingan-ryu are commonly referred to as sogoh jujutsu, sogoh bujutsu or sogoh budo, i.e. where various unarmed skills and weapons are combined within the tradition.
However, the individuals experience in practical contact, and observation of facts and violent events that one encounters or undergoes is where the "system of ideas" is proven.
There are many schools around the world that use the term jujutsu (Jiu Jitsu, Ju jitsu [sic] & so on) to describe their system. A small few are original traditional Japanese styles known as koryu, but most prevalent are the non- traditional modern systems developed according to their country’s national culture and the teacher’s level of understanding or belief of Japanese budo.
Traditional Japanese Jujutsu is used both unarmed or armed (with small weapons) and can be either defensive or offensive in its concept of combat.
Don't enter a confrontation without being sufficiently equipped or in the right frame of mind to deal with the situation. Awareness is the answer.
It's just good sense and sound judgement in practical matters.
"By exploring the old, one becomes able to understand the new".

Caught up with friends for a quick coffee and chat on their way from Brisbane to Dubbo for a Taekwondo seminar and Instructor Development Program.
Nigel, Andrew, Bill, Justin and Tim. Safe travels men.
I recently caught up with a karate enthusiast friend Nigel for a quick chat over coffee on the Gold Coast. He spoke of his "Instructor Development Program", and his attitude towards what he describes as functional karate (traditional V's non-traditional martial arts) and his achievements gained from his practise and studies under his mentor in the IRKRS and Shorinji-ryu as well as his guest Instructors to his club. Thank you for your time Nigel.

Our Story
Gunnedah Jujutsu Academy - A Private school of Japanese Martial Arts, was established in 1978. It is one of only a few of the leading contemporary Nihon Jujutsu School’s in Australia.
For those who are unaware Jujutsu comes from Japan. It was developed by the Warrior's of Japan (Samurai) for self preservation in combat.
In Japan 'sogo bujutsu', is described as composite martial arts with a comprehensive curriculum.
Techniques of grappling including pinning, joint locking/dislocation, bone breaking, strangulation/choking, throwing, pressure points as well as striking/kicking and traditional jujutsu related weapons (Japanese Swordsmanship) including the dagger, cord tying art and many others, as well as fi****ms ( Police Weapons and Defensive Tactics) are practiced in this diverse martial art at the Gunnedah Jujutsu Academy.
The objective is for a weaker armed or unarmed person to overcome a much bigger or stronger armed or unarmed person in combat.
The mainline ways such as judo (Kodokan) founded in the 1880’s and aikido (Aiki kai) founded in the 1930's, karate (Wado ryu and Shindo Jinen ryu) have their foundations in some of the older schools of jujutsu developed by the Samurai.
The Gunnedah Jujutsu Academy is led by two of the most senior exponents of Japanese Jujutsu in Australia today. The master teacher Phil Hinshelwood holds several teaching and accreditation licences, and has gained much experience from his studies (since 1971) in the art from it's source in Japan, as well as from his police career in the elite Tactical Teams, and military personal around the world. He is a Director of the Koryu Jujutsu Division of the Australian Ju Jitsu Association. His credentials include Master Instructor Methods of Self Defence, Police Weapons and Defensive Tactics Instructor, Police Tactical Team Instructor, Police Fi****ms Instructor. As such, all that is practiced at the Gunnedah Jujutsu Academy is his interpretation and comes from his experiences and qualifications gained.
The Gunnedah Chief Instructor John Hinshelwood having trained in Japan holds several Jujutsu teaching and accreditation licences, and heads the full time academy. Our dojo is assisted by Hunter Valley (Cessnock) Senior Instructor Simon Louis and Gold Coast (Tweed Heads) Senior Instructor Chris Davis who also hold Japan accreditation licences.
Training in Japan is offered to selected members of the Gunnedah Jujutsu Academy each year to have their skills tested by Japan's best Jujutsu fighters and teachers.
The Academy is open for training or practice Monday to Friday 9.00am to 9.00pm. Private lessons are available on request. Extended hours can be arranged.
