Each year, the Refugee Camp in My Neighbourhood initiative offers the wider community a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of refugees and people seeking asylum. In our third annual field trip, BUILD invited students to engage in this immersive experience, tracing the journey of a refugee to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges they face upon arriving in Australia.
It's easy to form opinions from a distance, but it's difficult to truly understand another person's life until we make the conscious effort to step into their shoes. This is the transformative power of the Refugee Camp in My Neighbourhood (RCIMN) experience. Participants not only learn essential facts and figures about the global refugee crisis, but also connect with individuals who were forced to flee their homes in search of safety.
The RCIMN allows participants to develop empathy and mindfulness as they listen to the personal testimonies of those with lived experience, offering a profound insight into the realities faced by refugees around the world.
Thank you to the students who came along!

What a successful turnout for our first field trip of the year! 🤩
This past week, our students engaged with Aboriginal history and culture through a fascinating presentation and guided tour at the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability in Waverton.
We were led by Karen Smith, the Aboriginal Education Officer from the Aboriginal Heritage Office, who educated our group on a wealth of topics including:
🌱 the Indigenous history of the local land
🌱 the significance of rock engravings on the site
🌱 native plants and their sustainable use as resources for Indigenous people
🌱 traditional use of waterways through Sydney’s harbour islands
With an average rating of 5.00/5.00 from our feedback survey, students strongly agreed that they were able to walk away with a greater understanding of the topic that was presented. Students were able to connect not only with each other but also with the history of Aboriginal culture that they may not have known prior to this field trip. 🖤💛❤️
Thank you to all the students who came along! It is always a pleasure to provide students with new learning opportunities that can enhance their global citizenship. 🌏

"As a young person, which global issue concerns you the most?"🤔
This was the question that our students pondered upon at the 'Youth Voices Amplified: UN Youth Representative Listening Tour' with Gavin Choong, the 2024 United Nations Youth Representative for Australia. Gavin represents young Australians domestically and internationally, gathering input through nationwide consultations with people aged 12-25. Following the tour, Gavin compiles a report for government, business, civil society leaders, and the UN General Assembly.
The intimate group of eager changemakers were able to explore the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and voice desired change on their most passionate concerns in both the global scene and their own life in Australia.
With an average rating of 4.86/5 in our post-event survey, students walked away from the session feeling "more empowered to apply what I have learnt to my life" 💡
Thank you Australian Youth Representative to the UN for inspiring our students to take one step closer to being responsible and aware global leaders and encouraging positive change. We look forward to sharing your report to the UN later this year.
