Thank you community members and all those who have supported our fundraising efforts - the community is doing an incredible job to continue to support those who are risking and giving their lives defending Ukraine against the continuing russian aggression. What is happening in Ukraine at the hands of russia angers us all. We thank you all sincerely and sadly we still have to continue our efforts and help is vital and urgent. You can help by donating directly to Defend Ukraine Appeal and by supporting fundraising events that are organised by or partnered with the Association of Ukrainians in SA.

We Remember, Unite and Shall Overcome.

Today is the 90th Anniversary of the Holodomor-Genocide of the Ukrainian People by Famine. Many of the victims were Ukrainian children and infants. We gathered this morning to commemorate and remember this tragedy, which affected and continues to affect millions of Ukrainian families.

The Holodomor of 1932-33 was carried out on Soviet dictator Stalin’s orders, by the leadership of the communist party and government of the USSR in 1932-1933, who organized the artificial famine that caused the deaths of millions of Ukrainians in rural areas of the Ukrainian SSR, and in Kuban (Northern Caucasus, modern-day Russia), where the vast majority of the population was Ukrainian. Ukraine lost millions of human lives to the genocide of 1932-1933, and to other man-made famines in 1921-1923 and 1946-1947.

The goal of the Holodomor-genocide was to eliminate the Ukrainian people as a national group. Through forced confiscation of food, blockades of villages and entire districts, travel bans outside of famine-stricken Soviet Ukraine, curtailment of rural trade, and repression of dissenters, the communist totalitarian regime created “conditions” for Ukrainians that were “incompatible with life.” Moscow was counting on the physical destruction of our nation.

Ninety years after the Holodomor-genocide, Russians are once again employing genocidal methods against Ukrainians to destroy our identity, culture, and language, to destroy the Ukrainian nation as such. In order to accomplish this, the occupiers are killing and deporting Ukrainians en masse to remote regions of the Russian Federation, destroying Ukrainian cities, imposing forced assimilation and artificially changing ethnic compositions in the occupied territories.

As Russia continues its military aggression, the collective memory of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 is a force for social mobilization of Ukrainians and the international community to fight the aggressor state. That is why Holodomor commemorations are being held under the slogan "We remember, unite and shall overcome!"

25/11/2023

Today we remember the victims of the Holodomor - Where millions of Ukrainians died through a cruel, man-made famine that was orchestrated by Stalin’s regime. It is the 90th anniversary of this genocide.

Congratulating our young community member Kalani Pryzbylo on his selection to the Ukraine Tridents National Rugby League Team! Well done to Kalani, we wish him and the team the best of luck for their game this coming Saturday in Sydney

🇬🇧Ukraine Rugby League will take another step forward this week, making its Australian debut with the newly named Ukraine Trident’s Rugby League side; a team of eligible Ukrainian players based in Australia.

The side will take on South Sudan this coming Saturday 25th November 2023 at Terry Lamb Oval in Chester Hill in Sydney, New South Wales.

Head Coach Dan Beardshaw said this; “I’m really excited to see the boys take the field this coming week, we have a great mix of youth and experience who are really embracing their Ukrainian culture. Not only have the players been working hard on the field, a large number of them have begun studying the Ukrainian language and other aspects of their Culture headed up by Manager Peter Kobryn”.

“I think it also shows what an amazing group of guys we have, as current injured players Zayne Sluvinsky (South Sydney Rabbitohs) and Jett Cleary (Penrith Panthers) have committed to run water for this game and we have had Owen Hromow (Canberra Raiders) doing the same role in the Heritage 9’s a few weeks back.”

Saturday not only marks the day of the first 13 a side Rugby League game for the Ukrainians, but it is also a day of remembrance of the Ukrainian Holomodor. This was also known as the Great Ukrainian Famine which lasted from 1932 to 1933 and killed an estimated 4 million people through starvation.

The game will take place as a part of a great day of Emerging Nations football, kicking off at 11.20am with Philippines v Syria in u16’s, before our Tridents take on Sudan and finishing with Thailand v Philippine Admirals at 2.30pm.

We loved seeing and meeting and experiencing all of the many cultures and also the opportunity to share some of our own traditions. The Ukrainian Women's Association in South Australia did an amazing job cooking up a feast of Holubtsi and other delicious foods and Volya Ukrainian Cossack Dancers entertained the crowds on the stage, performing their 'Hopak'. We are very proud to be a part of this day, celebrating the multicultural values that we share in Australia.

We extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the Minister for Tourism and Multicultural Affairs Zoe Bettison MP, the Premier of South Australia, Peter Malinauskas and the team at Multicultural Affairs SA - for this wonderful event and for their ongoing support for the Ukrainian Community, especially for those who have recently arrived from Ukraine.

This month has been a big one for fundraising. On Sunday 22 October the main hall of the Ukrainian Community Centre was the setting for the ‘United for Ukraine’ concert. Three choirs performed at this event - Vocalize (directed by Kerry Polkinghorne), La La Land (directed by Carol Young) and our own Ukrainian choir, Leleki Ensemble (directed by Tania Elbert-Hammond). Well over 250 people attended the event and most were not from the Ukrainian community. The principal organiser of the concert was Kerry Polkinghorne who started the Vocalize community choir in 2012 in Marion. Today, it consists of over 90 choristers aged from 25 to 80+ and is accompanied by pianist Heidi Schutz. All profits from this event will be donated to Ukraine Crisis Appeal. Bravo! and Thank you Vocalize Choir and everyone who came to support!
