It’s pretty clear why the international WorldSkills competition is referred to by some as the Skills Olympics when you look at the pics from the closing ceremony. Congrats to all who took part and for the incredible achievements of those who won.
Keep an eye out for regional competition announcements for future competitions through Tas TAFE.
Big news for WorldSkills with the announcement that the international competitions will be held in Japan in 2028. This is great news for our up and coming apprentices and trainees who should be setting their sights on steps that could take them to Japan in four years. What a great goal.
Wow. What an incredible night the Tasmanian Training Awards last Friday 6 September.
We headed north to Launceston and had close to 400 of our closest vocational training and education friends with us on the night.

WINNER-APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR
Congratulations to the 2024 Tasmanian Apprentice of the Year Benjamin (Ben) Barker from Hobart. Ben was inspired by a love of cars and time spent with his grandfather, an influential mentor, who taught him about patience and attention to detail. He has brought these qualities into to his Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology apprenticeship done through Tas TAFE at Veolia Environmental Services and says his early experiences have given him the drive to help young people overcome challenges and be the best they can be.

Congratulations to the 2024 Tasmanian Trainee of the Year Imogen Tyers from Devonport who completed a Business Traineeship with Work & Training. The traineeship has provided Imogen skills and experience to take on leadership roles at Seasonal South Motel & Function Centre and support the business’ charity arm, Due South, which provides wellness services for veterans and first responders.

Congratulations to pakana man Harley Mansell from Hobart who has been named as the 2024 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year for his achievements in Tas TAFE Certificate III in Guiding Course. Working with wukalina Walk, Harley has become an advocate for VET, encouraging young community members to explore the options available to them and says going out on country for the course has been an important part of the journey.

Congratulations to the 2024 Tasmanian Vocational Student of the Year Andrew Bartlett from Devonport. Andrew’s journey is an inspiration for many, having completed a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) with Avidity Training and Development RTO 60153 and now working at Possability.

Congratulations to 2024 School-based Trainee of the Year Aleira Chalker who gained a role with the Tasmanian Government’s Legislative Council. Based at Hobart City High School Big Picture she undertook a Certificate IV in Business with Scala the Training Company and through this has advocated for the development of the Youth Drop-in Centre in Glenorchy, presented at forums and has been an ambassador for school-based apprenticeships.

Congrats to the 2024 VET in Schools Student of the Year Connor Maguire from Elizabeth College Hobart, who has studied a Certificate II in Tourism with the goal of extending his hospitality experience and providing him a future pathway in the outdoor tourism sector.

Congratulations to the 2024 Teacher/Trainer of the Year Renee Hinds from Don College, Devonport who has been recognised for her work at the College and in the community to establish Early Childhood and Care opportunities for students, including plans for a childcare centre at the College, which will help students gain hands-on experience for their careers.

We adore last year’s Tasmanian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander winner of the Tasmanian Training Awards Bradley Maynard. A real inspiration, Bradley completed a Certificate IV in Work, Health and Safety with TasTAFE to help progress with his career. We’re looking forward to seeing who he hands the baton to at the 2024 Awards on Friday night.

From an apprenticeship in boiler making to a Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety with TasTAFE, Bradley’s commitment to upskilling has not only advanced his career, but also improved safety at his workplace Crisp Bros. and Haywards.
Bradley’s journey doesn’t stop there. Whilst studying, he assisted with the bushfire response on Kangaroo Island, enhancing his teamwork and leadership skills.
As a 20-year member of the Army Reserve, he leads the Defence Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Network and serves as an Indigenous Liaison Officer for Tasmania.

National Skills Week (19–25 August) is dedicated to raising the profile of Australian vocational learning and celebrating the skills of our apprentices and learners.
Across the week, TasTAFE is hosting 4 WorldSkills Australia Regional Competitions: in Hairdressing, Barbering, Beauty Therapy and Cloud Computing.
WorldSkills competitions are Australia’s biggest vocational education and excellence competitions, with more than 500 challenges held in 34 regions across Australia.
Joshua won gold at the WorldSkills national finals in 2018. He then represented Australia in the international finals in Russia in 2019: he finished 6th in the world and was awarded a Medallion of Excellence!
