Unsettling Queenstown
3 August - 8 September 2024

https://unsettlingqueenstown.org/

Design Tasmania is proud to present Unsettling Queenstown - architecture for recovering country, the Australian representation at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2023. Haunted by a large-scale copper replica of the belvedere of Queenstown’s Empire Hotel, this show immerses audiences in the dark magnetism of Tasmania’s history and landscapes, opening unsettling perspectives on decolonising architectures and alternative futures.

Our first public program for the exhibition included a panel discussion with Unsettling Queenstown's Creative Directors who shared the ideas behind the making of the Biennale exhibition. We also hosted First Nations arts and cultural leaders discussing issues relating to cultural renewal and colonialism. We thank Aunty Theresa Sainty, Julie Gough and Ali Gumillya Baker (facilitator), and the Creative Directors for sharing their time and thoughts.

Our second public program event here at Design Tasmania (hosted by the Australian Institute of Architects - Tasmania Chapter) will be on Saturday 31 August 11am - 12.30pm. The speakers will talk about how they consider Country and First Nations perspectives when designing.

Speakers include Ashley Halliday (Ashley Halliday Architects), Paul Wakelam (Paul Wakelam Architect) and Felicity Bott (Great Southern Dance), with more to be confirmed.

We'd love for you to join us. Entrance is free.

Our Tactic Work with Paul Wakelam Architect as a part of 2023 Venice Bienalle Showing now at Design Centre in Launceston with talks at the nd of the month. Go to our web site https://greatsoutherndance.com.au/ and check out our two tactics Site Geist I and II, “KEEP LISTENING UNTIL YOU FIND THE BEAUTY”(films), and “[…+THE BUILDINGS THEY ARE SLEEPING NOW]” (mappings to dance). The tactics attempt to start conversations around de-colonisation in Tasmanian topography.

Mike’s exhibition is now open!

Here’s one section featuring 72 experimental inkjet poster prints on paper. Together, they present a snapshot of life at the end of the 1980s with social, political and historical references relating to LGBTIQA+ rights and issues in Tasmania and beyond. And plenty of colourful pop culture, which provided a necessary escape from the fear, shame and struggles of being a q***r kid in Tassie at a time when it was being gay was yet to be decriminalised and the HIV/AIDS epidemic was causing a climate of hatred and division. It’s a deeply personal story, including some difficult topics but also one which celebrates youthful nostalgia, q***r excellence and survival against the odds.

Check it out if you get the chance!
