We're coming up on the end of 2023, and we have one last bash planned. We'll be at MONA - Museum of Old and New Art on the lawns from 12-2 this Sunday. This one's for all our friends who haven't been able to make it to a weekend show. Sit down on the grass, enjoy the warmer weather, and listen to some math rock. Go on. You deserve it. 🍟

We’re getting keen to hit .cider on Friday, how fun! Also extremely pumped to catch , who are absolute dears and will open up the pit in the most wholesome manner imaginable.

We have a few more shows over the following months if you missed the fry-up. More on those soon.

Friends, this party is gonna get QUIET 🤘🏼

We’re very pleased to be back celebrating the launch of our new tune Cloudy Bay, and this time, we’re doing things a bit differently. We’re hanging upstairs at our fav joint for some drinks and tacos and reimagining a bunch of our songs in a more intimate style. Joining us is the charming and the gregarious Sam Hunn, who’s recent split from has the paparazzi in quite the flap.

23/11/2021

Hello friends!

Our first single, which has yet failed to be released... (more on that)... will be getting its premier tonight on Edge radio sometime after 7pm along with a bunch of other cool home grown stuff, including new stuff! (heck yeah)..
About the single... the tune went up pretty close to the expected release date and we missed the “x business days” clause, oops. In any case, sometime between now and the 30th, it’ll drop, and we don’t even know when so it’ll be a surprise for us too! 😅

So hey, if you see it pop up, give us a hoy, otherwise we’ll be ringing the bells when it lands and we’ll see you on the 26th for a look at everything else we have in stock.

Yours truly,
The Friars

'Song of Ascents' -- Coming 21.11.21

There’s a couple of instrumental sections in Song of Ascents, including a pretty long wordless outro. It’s something we’ve been really enjoying working into a few Deep Friars tunes, as we have a bit of a bent toward immersive, cinematic songs instead of cramming hooks into two minute bangers. This section uses some odd time signatures to reflect the non-symmetrical, chaotic perfection of the old growth forests that inspired the lyrics. Plus, almost any song is improved with harmonised guitar lines, right?

19/11/2021

'Song of Ascents' -- Coming 21.11.21

The chorus section of Ascents tries to capture the ‘hikers glow’: the feeling of calm, clarity and presence to the moment that comes during and after seeing a superb view or being in a remote, sacred place. There’s a certain awareness of the connectedness of all things and an acceptance of your place in them that comes with mountaintops or old forests. To me it’s like putting your favourite jeans back on when they’re freshly clean and dry, but for my brain.

19/11/2021

'Song of Ascents' -- Coming 21.11.21

I wrote the sketch for Song of Ascents in the winter of 2020, just after restrictions were easing after the months-long lockdown. The council had just officially opened up Wellington Park, which has all the forest and alpine trails for exploring kunanyi, Hobart’s friendly neighbourhood mountain. I headed up there at first opportunity on the first day it was allowed. Having basically not left my suburb for weeks on end, getting back amongst the towering, ancient trees and the panoramic views was a transcendent experience. Those trees have stood tall through so many turmoils and crises in human history, receiving each day with it’s gifts and challenges and always pushing upwards towards sunlight. The verses hijack the language of liturgy and sacrament to describe the sacred experience of standing among those gentle giants and trying to glean some wisdom and perspective from their calm presence. “Creation is our first and final cathedral.” - Richard Rohr
