Fun in the garden at lunchtime today. Thank you to New Town Station Nursery for the kind donation of seedlings to get our garden started.
Due to the windy conditions, our cake stall will now be held in the multi-purpose room. It will be a little squishy, so please be patient.
Reminder that the School Association cake stall will be held tomorrow to raise funds for our Garden Club.
Open to parents from 2.35pm and students from 2.45pm. Donations can be left at the office.
Congratulations to Yusef and Mary for their ongoing chess accomplishments. Yusuf came 4th (out of 37 players, just behind two Tasmanian State and Open champions) in the Kingston Chess Classic (an Australian Chess Federation rated adult tournament), and Mary won the Hobart Girls Chess Tournament, playing an undefeated 7 out of 7 rounds. A very talented family.
A huge thank you to the families who came along to the working bee in our school garden today. Every little bit helps, and this morning proved that. Thanks to Harmony for organising it.

Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:
• Walking with them the whole way to school
• If they get the bus, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop
• If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.
Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic. Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so please join us for Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 10 May.

Last year, NTPS students fundraised to purchase a bench seat and tree in memory of New Town Primary School teacher, Alison Bailey. We warmly invite you to the tree planting ceremony on Thursday, 9 May.
Welcome back to term two. We will be holding a School Association Meeting on Tuesday 30 May (this week) at 6.30pm, at the school. If you would like to participate but you are unable to attend in person, please contact the office or email me directly, and I will send you an invitation to join via Teams - [email protected]
Thanks.
We are very proud of all our students who were involved in Anzac Day commemorations today.
We had 13 students carry banners for the 15th and 40th Battalions in the Hobart Anzac Day Parade, and Erica and Onadee were guest speakers at the Lenah Valley RSL Anzac Day service.
Lest we forget
All of the staff at New Town Primary School would like to wish students and their families a safe and restful holiday break. See you all for the beginning of Term 2 on
Monday 29 April.
Last day of Term 1 is tomorrow, Friday 12 April.
Have a wonderful Easter break.
We return back to school on Wednesday 3 April.
Some of our staff were able to attend the Teaching Matters Summit 2024, in Hobart for 2 days.
They heard from a selection of speakers, including Dr Nathaniel Swain, Dr Jan Hasbrouck (reading fluency), and Dr Jennifer Buckingham (speaking on the significant deficits in initial teacher education).
All great steps in the right direction in supporting Tassie teachers & leaders to be well equipped to ensure we produce a literate society
Sorry, no breakfast club this morning.
What a wonderful Harmony Week at NTPS, celebrating our diversity. It was about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
What a great morning to ride to school. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered, and most of, to the students who participated. Everyone did a great job at listening and being safe.
Today is National Ride to School Day. We have 2 meeting points: John Kennedy Park or for more experienced riders, corner of Cross and Swanston Streets. Meet at 8.20 for an 8.30 departure. Be safe 🚴♀️
As part of our Harmony Week celebrations, tomorrow, students are invited to wear traditional dress or orange clothing/accessories.
The canteen will be open at recess for orange themed snacks (50c), and the courtyard will come alive at lunch with the opportunity for students to get a small henna design painted on their hand.
Harmony Week is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It’s about inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Reminder that our School Association AGM will be on tonight from 6pm at the school. This will be followed by a regular School Association meeting. Please email [email protected] if you would like to join via Teams

From 2024 all our teachers are undertaking training in how to teach reading based on the latest evidence.
This means that by 2026, no matter where your child goes to school, they will be taught to become confident readers in the same effective way.

NAPLAN tests start tomorrow, 13 March and run until 25 March.
NAPLAN is an assessment that helps parents and carers to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy. NAPLAN is just one of the many methods used to help teachers support your child’s learning.
The assessment is based on what students learn in the classroom and is not a pass or fail test.
Best of luck to all students participating and thank you to all involved that enable this to occur.
