Tanning damages your skin cells and speeds up visible signs of aging.
More importantly, tanning can lead to skin cancer. The more often you burn the greater the risk.

Over 95% of skin cancers are caused by exposure to UV radiation. UV radiation is not the same as sunshine – UV levels can be high on a cloudy day or at the snowfields.

To protect your skin, Slip on clothing, Slop on sunscreen, Slap on a hat, Slide on sunglasses and Seek shade.

National Skin Cancer Action Week is here, running from the 20-26th of November.

The Cancer Council Australia estimates that sadly 2000 Australians will die of skin cancer this year. In fact, skin cancer accounts for 80% of newly diagnosed cancers, and 2 out of 3 Australians are expected to be diagnosed in their lifetime.

It's not all bad news though! More than 90% of skin cancers are caused by UV exposure, which means practising proper sun safety can drastically reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. Also, the earlier a skin cancer is detected, the better the expected outcome, with many skin cancers requiring only a simple surgery to be removed. This makes it equally important to get regular skin checks.

Use this Skin Cancer Action week as a reminder to be sun safe this summer, and to book your next skin check!
