💫UNCOMMON KIDS💫

Introducing Tilly Loves Tools, the story of a little girl who learns with her hands. She doesn’t fit in at school until she realised that her differences are superpowers. We wrote this book years before Uncommon was ever on our horizon and it’s now the first offering in our Uncommon Kids initiative.

Some kids learn with their hands. Some kids learn by moving. Some kids learn through music. Some kids need different forms of language. Some don’t need language at all. From a really young age we give kids boxes to tick. Tell them what to aim for and how to get there. And how to feel if they can’t. I’m not sure we really teach them how to learn about themselves and see differences as strengths. It’s a bit ironic; when we know the ones that don’t fit the mould often end up changing the world. The innovators. The rebels. The trailblazers.

The thing that I love the most about the concept of Uncommon, is that being unique is actually the thing that makes us all the same. It shouldn’t be true, but makes perfect sense when you stop and think about it. I’m not sure the world is structured in a way that encourages us to lean into different, to learn about ourselves and each other and to use that knowledge to make us collectively stronger. These days more than ever, we need to do better at this and we need to teach our kids to do the same.

Uncommon Kids will roll out over the next few years with the aim of empowering the next generation to learn about learning, to learn about themselves and each other. If one kid realises that being different is actually their superpower, our work will be done.

One of the most special parts of our rebrand was commissioning a custom piece of art work from local Aboriginal artist Kye Lane as part of our Welcome to Country.

Kye’s talent as an artist is obvious, but it’s his connection to spirit and story that blew us away. Take a read of the story behind this beautiful artwork, combining local Aboriginal culture with the Uncommon spirit, reflected in the uniqueness of the platypus and the historical significance across the Ipswich region.

Thank you so much Kye, it’s been an absolute privilege - this will hang in our office forever!

You can check out Kye’s amazing artwork at Kye Lane-Art

We’ve known for a while that one day we would outgrow Chalk Electrical. It will always be our first hoorah, the place we cut our teeth and learned how much we had to learn. But we knew it wasn’t the path that would get us where we wanted to go.

Since the beginning we’ve had innovation on our minds and excellence in our blood, but there was always something missing. There’s no reason a trade company can’t breathe culture and soul, seek social impact and spark change. There’s no reason a trade company can’t reinvent what it means to invest in its workers, not just professionally but in terms of personal growth and mental resilience.

These days more than ever we need to understand ourselves and each other, and we need to teach our kids to do the same. Ironically, being uncommon is actually what connects us the most. We’re proud as punch to launch what has been a lifetime in the making. Doing common things in an Uncommon way. Here’s to the next chapter - welcome to Uncommon Electricians.
