Time on Bikes Closed Tue-Thurs till April

Alison currently has limited mobility – so on Tuesdays to Thursdays we won’t be open for bike pickups and deliveries unless you already have a booking on those days. We are still open for phone calls after 5pm on those days.

She has a spiral fracture on her Fibula.. so she’s kitted out with a Moon Boot for a while. The incident involved bringing in some washing.. and the dining room.. thus demonstrating the dangers of NOT riding a motorcycle 😊

As usual, give us a call on 0419 791 186 7am-10pm Fri-Sun or after 5pm Mon-Thurs if you want to get more “Time on Bikes”

Alison as a Touring Novice - Day 5 & 5.5! - Wollongong - Brisbane

Today's focus was a transit run & meant to be the day we arrived home. With weather hold ups early in our trip, we knew it was ambitious to ride Wollongong to Brisbane in a day, but thought we would just try to get as far as we could and see how things go. We've done that trip in the car before, but not with a novice tourer like me on the bike.

The plan was to avoid Sydney, and we decided to go to the west via the Putty Road which is always fun riding. From there we would head up the New England highway to home. Overnight in Wollongong, strong gusty winds came up, so I wasn't looking forward to riding. We left Corrimal and headed up Bulli Pass towards Appin and were delighted to find that the winds had stopped at the top of Bulli Pass.

We tried to manage stops as best we could - stops are important for fatigue management but are the thing that can cost you a lot of time. We try to combine stops eg get food & fuel at the same time, if stopping for fuel, make sure to fuel up all the bikes at the same time to save extra stops later.

When riding together, we have found that it works best for us not to necessarily ride with each other in sight at all times. We ride at our own pace so that we can corner etc as we feel comfortable, and then regroup at the next town or other agreed upon spot. It's important to us not to work super hard to stay together - if someone gets through a set of lights while the person behind needs to stop, that's ok. In the whole trip, only twice did I completely lose Brooke - once I had no idea where he was, but knew we were due for a fuel stop. I pulled in at the next servo and phoned him, and he was waiting a little down the road. Another time he had pulled into a rest area, but I didn't see him, so I stopped in the next town and we worked it out.

The Putty Road was enjoyable - lots of roadworks, but also lots of nice corners where I was able to put into practice flipping left/right corners. Being weekdays, there was very little traffic, which added to the enjoyment.

A quick lunch at Muswellbrook, and by mid afternoon we were in Tamworth where we briefly caught up with Brooke's uncle. We stopped for a quick drink in Uralla & talked about how far to go. It was close to dusk, but we felt good so decided to keep going. 120km down the road just after 8pm we pulled over in Glen Innes - in the dark I had slowed down a lot over concern for animals on the road and managing road surface (our entire trip there have been a lot of potholes and road damage, likely from heavy rain over much of Australia this year). We decided it was more sensible to stop for the night even though Brooke was due at work in Brisbane the next morning and I had customers to meet with. The motel we had pulled up near was open so we stayed.

Next morning, we left Glen Innes at first light (see the beautiful clouds in the photo below) just after 5am (4am Qld time) and rode to Warwick for a quick breakfast. It was especially cold around Tenterfield (around 2 degrees), but slowly got warmer as we went. Leaving Warwick, Brooke headed straight into his "day job" work at fortitude valley, while I arrived at the Time on Bikes shed to meet a customer. After riding 694 km the day before, and then 342km before our work days.. we slept really well that night! I had about 45 calls on Thursday and 35 calls on Friday getting back to the backlog of bike hire messages we collected while away on our trip.

Some of the things I've learnt about touring on motorcycles are:

It always takes longer. Allow yourself enough margin in your trip to enjoy the ride without worrying about time too much.

Don't take too much stuff (but take wet weather gear!!!) Have enough space to pack everything without "squeezing" stuff in.. which takes a lot of time to repack. we had 3 x dry bags, a dirty clothes bag - each went into 1 pannier, and 2 top box/rack bags for odds and ends.

Have a definite plan for route and timing.. but keep it flexible. if you don't have a plan at all you'll waste time deciding. If you aren't flexible to change it along the way you might miss great experiences, endure more weather than necessary, and be more stressed.

Just ride the bike you have. The bikes we took were what worked out. both naked bikes, comfy enough. not perfect .. (windscreens would be nice) but perfectly fine with some throwover panniers fitted. If you adjust your ride program to the bike capability you can almost ride anything.

Make sure the touring group understand the aims... relaxing, keeping to schedule, twisties, comfort etc. Not a problem for the two of us riding.. but sometimes larger groups can hamper each other's enjoyment. With everyone being grown ups.. its OK to split the tour if necessary so everyone can enjoy the ride they are looking for.

Take breaks, take it easy, and ride to live another day.

Thanks for following along. I don't have a "next" trip planned yet, but maybe you are inspired to plan one soon! Cheers, Alison

*** Mentor's notes from Brooke ***

The goal of this trip was to "immerse" Alison in riding to help her "make riding normal" again. She used to ride to work sometimes in the early 90's, but had long gaps of not riding and needs to build her confidence again.

A big trip like this has let her focus on just riding almost everyday for just short of a week. it means no school drop offs, customers, work (nursing), washing, bills etc that distract focus, and just let life be about riding for an intense period.

My aim was to provide this for her. I thought a 2-way trip to philip island was too much for her first trip, so the chance of a fly -ride trip for her.. with 2 days of melbourne/Philip island commuting followed by 3 days of touring was fantastic. Days of starting stopping, parking, fuelling, navigating and even some overtaking that gave her practice, practice, practice while she was busy experiencing a holiday break.

I loved this ride, but as a "ride mentor" the whole ride had to be about Alison's needs and capabilities. She made the calls on how she was feeling - and about stops, stayovers, and some of the route planning. I encourage all mentors to focus on the needs of the developing rider.. and put that ahead of your own trip preferences.

This last week Alison has ridden around 3000km. That probably more than she has totalled in the previous 15 years. its been great for her experience.. and I wonder how long before she's eying off my Goldwing. Once she's confident to start and stop in it... the comfy seat might mean long trips I'll have to find a different ride! :) Cheers, Brooke

Alison as a Touring Novice - Day 4 - Orbost to Wollongong.

Today was gear failure day, much better weather, beautiful places, and family.

The plan was to leave Orbost early and head through Cann River, up the south coast of NSW to Wollongong (580km). I started with a rookie mistake - sat my helmet on the seat of the bike before we left, bumped it off, breaking the visor into a few pieces. The helmet was due for retirement soon and we were carrying an extra one in the topbox from Brooke’s passenger from the last trip. Thankfully it fitted me OK.

The first part of our ride was a pre-breakfast run on the nice twisty roads from Orbost to Cann River, with great weather. Today was the day for chilling, and enjoying the scenic ride.

We stopped at Cann River and enjoyed a beautiful breakfast at Squire’s Cafe - Cann River . Great food, positive & friendly service, and a great vibe. Here we also made some running repairs to tape the heel of my boot back on! Most of my gear is due for renewal, & was a wedding anniversary gift from Brooke in 2011 (he's romantic, hey?!? You know - 50th anniversary is Gold, 25th anniversary is silver, 20th anniversary is bike gear...)

From there we headed up the coast through Eden & Merimbula, then took a detour to Tathra for a warm drink and a walk on the beach. Some roads through forest, some lovely old wooden bridges (the lengthways planks with chunky bolts sticking up looked daunting, but I kept my eyes up and the bike didn’t get pulled around as much as I expected), and lots of beaches are a real feature of this area. The weather today was sunny, occasional strong wind and next to no rain, which made for a really lovely day. Stronger winds came into play around Nowra, but were much easier to cope with when there was no torrential rain.

Late in the day we joined some of my extended family in Wollongong for dinner - so lovely to be together again after the separation of the last few years, and extra special to meet our newest little family member.

Some people have been surprised at my choice of bike - our Honda CB500F - for a long ride. Returning to riding, and being quite unsure of myself, I have appreciated taking my time in working my way up to bigger bikes again. First up, I got comfortable on the XT250 for slow riding, then moved onto the CMX500 Rebel before hopping on the CB500F. Being a mid-sized LAMS bike the CB500 for me was a step up from smaller, lighter bikes like our MT03, short enough that (at 162cm) I can touch the ground, and it has enough power. It’s also particularly comfortable for longer distance runs. I will likely start trying some 650's in the near future. I mostly enjoy riding naked bikes, and I think I would enjoy adventure bikes if the height was ok for me.

It was great to have an enjoyable day soaking in some of the scenery and relaxing along the way, but this did mean a lot of km’s to cover on the next day. More about that on my next post – you may realise what a hectic end to our trip this created, and why I am only posting Tuesday’s ride on Saturday.

Cheers, Alison

Alison as a Touring Novice - Day 3 - Philip Island to Orbost.

Weather warnings didn't disappoint today as we had cold, rain, wind, rain, sun and finally, more wind & rain.

It's our first day on our trip home, and so far the longest day of riding I have had. We only covered about 400km, stopping early due to a mid afternoon storm at Orbost. The weather fined up later in the arvo so we could have ridden a few more hours, but the motel had already been booked by that stage.

With forecasts for bad weather for coastal and alpine areas, we took the middle ground through Warragul, Traralgon & Bruthen through to Orbost.

With weather on and off, we made more stops along the way - warm food at Warragul Maccas, Black-Pearl Fish-Cafe excellent souvlaki at Sale.

Our clothes are kept dry in canoe bags carried in soft panniers (see photos) which works really well. I finally got hold of a wet weather jacket at Christensens Motorcycles at warragul but no pants yet.

The rain made for uncomfortable riding today, and slowed me down when it got super heavy, but the most challenging thing was the wind. Extremely strong, gusting headwinds and crosswinds push the bike around, which I had to correct for by counter steering.

It fined up for a beautiful run from Bairnsdale to Orbost which I really enjoyed with the adverse conditions lifted. We pulled up to plan where to sleep tonight, when a massive storm started rolling in so we called it & scrambled for the Orbost Country Road Motor Inn . Brooke got me to decide how fatigued I was and whether to keep going or not.

Tonight we have decided tomorrow to head up the coast from Cann River, chasing milder temperatures & better weather.

That's all for now.
Cheers,
Alison

World SBK up close!

Thanks for everyone's patience while we closed for our world sbk trip. Our 3 day general entry ticket included a paddock pass.. that and $30 pit lane walk got us some real close up moments.. great racing and a great weekend. Its pretty cool being able to ride around the track outfield too.

We'll be back to take bookings on Thursday.. but bikes are still booked ahead.. and there's still around 2300km to ride to get home (see alisons touring newbie posts..)

Alison as a Touring Novice - Days 1 & 2 - Melbourne to Philip Island.

As Brooke previously mentioned, our World Superbikes trip from Melbourne to Brisbane is my first ever long tour on a bike. I'm writing a few notes to share my experience as someone who is getting reacquainted with bike riding, after long periods of little or no riding. I had my restricted licence for 20 years, & then my unrestricted for about 10 years, but sometimes still lack confidence when dealing with things like parking & slow riding, especially while trying to manage traffic at the same time.

The first part of our trip was the ride from Melbourne to Philip Island, parking and moving around the circuit, and the ride to our local accommodation.

Some of the things I dealt with were getting out of the electric sliding gate at the storage place where we picked up the bikes, lane positioning on the freeway through the city, parking at a busy service station, and then parking at the track.

At the Superbikes you can ride around the outfield perimeter road and pull up pretty much wherever you like to watch the racing. This was great fun, but meant dealing with gravel roads, soft conditions and parking on wet grass at various angles and slopes.

What have I learnt? To park far enough away from the bike beside you in case the side stand sinks into the soft ground - need to avoid damaging another bike. To point the bike uphill on a slope to keep it level side to side which prevents issues with the bike leaning to far (or not enough) to be on the side stand. This also means the side stand wont fold up like it might if you point the bike downhill and it starts to roll forward. Finally, pointing it uphill means less pushing the bike backwards as you can use the engine to move uphill or just let the bike roll backwards to move downhill.

Riding on wet grass and soft ground has taught me to be soft & gentle - brake gently, accelerate gently & turn gently.

Tomorrow the real touring begins with severe weather warnings and no wet weather gear. We'll be looking for some bike shops in a hurry (I was on my way to buy wet weather gear in Brisbane when our flights to Melbourne got cancelled and I had to immediately go to the airport for an earlier flight).

I'll post again in the next day or so & let you know how I go with some long distance riding. Cheers, Alison

SBK trips starts early for timeonbikes...

We had a mad scramble to get to the airport 8 hours earlier than planned .. when our flight to Melbourne tonight got cancelled..

Our new home is Newcastle airport for the next 4 hours.... unplanned stopover for us... but still will put us ahead of actual schedule.

We've seen a few messages come through for bike hire.. we can't get to our booking sheet till next Thursday... no room for the PC on the bikes for the trip home.

Off to philip island for SBK...

Time on Bikes motorcycle hire is closed this weekend till thurs 24 November while we head to philip island for the world superbikes. After a scramble of a day, the last two bikes went out on hire tonight.. the vfr800f and CBR650R. Now it is time to pack!!!

After Brooke rode down to the motogp last month.. this time its a fly/ride trip returning on the cb500f (Alison) and a borrowed Harley fat bob (Brooke).

While Brooke has extensive bike touring experience.. its Alison's first ride of more than a few hours.. even though she's ridden for 30 years. We'll try to post a ride report from Alison to give some perspective of the journey from a touring noob.

Have a great weekend and we'll see some of you next week for more bike hires... cheers Brooke and Alison 0419 791 186

Ram Raid Thief at Time on Bikes!!!

***Edit Post we've added a photo of the Shoei helmet that was stolen - please get in touch if you see it for sale anywhere.

This morning, two people in a white triton single cab rammed our shed door in broad daylight just after 5am. If you know the dude in the photo, you might like to suggest that he is nudging businesses like ours that help people get ride time that little bit closer to closing.

We find it upsetting that we spend a lot of personal time and risk our personal savings to help provide an awesome service, and then stuff like this happens.

The thief didn't escape with any bikes.. just a crappy old helmet - black and white with a swirly pattern on it. We assume that he (and his assistant in the car) discovered that we don't leave the bike keys at the shed, that they were all individually locked with alarmed disc locks, and maybe (or not) realised that we utilise GPS trackers for bikes.

So our landlords have a damaged shed to deal with.. which they certainly don't deserve (or anyone) with the associated cost and hassle of immediate re-securing and ultimate final repair.

We were about to refresh and increase our fleet to meet increasing demand, but I'm sure you can understand why this takes away some of the enthusiasm of doing so. We'll probably re-evaluate our strategy over the next month or so to see how we can still help people get riding experience without unduly exposing us to personal risks. Certainly the likelihood of getting any more "premium" bikes for the occasional rider just took a massive dive.

Let's hope we can see past this to get some more learner bikes out there, but I'm sure you'll excuse us for being a little grumpy for a little while :) cheers, Brooke and Alison 0419 791 186

Motogp trip .. some family time out

Last week Alison, Brooke and 1 of our daughters headed off to the motogp for some fun and down time.

Fantastic weekend. Brooke rode down on our CB500F, to be joined by the girls by plane where we borrowed a Harley to commute to philip island.

Great races, we were able to park the bikes at the track on Saturday, but Sunday we had to join the bus crowd from Cowes.

We are looking forward to superbikes next month.. when we'll fly back down to ride back together. We might even get a ride report from Alison as it will be her first big distance ride..

As always, call us if you need bike hire.. we love help people get "time on bikes" cheers, Brooke and Alison 0419 791 186

Bike hire prizes - Father's day at Mt Crosby bowls club

We've put up some bike hire vouchers for the Mt Crosby bowls club raffle at their Father's day event today. Mt Crosby Bowls Club are running food, barefoot bowls, live music, jumping castle from 12pm today.

We've loaded up to have a few bikes on display (due to rain cancellations fri/sat), and then back to our karalee shed for afternoon customers from 5pm.

Today it will be me, Alison and all 4 kids for church together, lunch at the bowls club, and (after a few customers) round it out by watching the motogp action at Misano tonight

Hire Bike Delivery from Time on Bikes

We've been putting together an affordable delivery package for those that find getting to Karalee to pick up a bike difficult.

On Monday nights we can deliver North Brisbane (as far as Caboolture) for weekly hires. $50 per bike for delivery, $50 per bike for pickup.

On Friday nights we can deliver South Brisbane (as far as Beenleigh) for weekly hires. $50 per bike for delivery, $50 per bike for pickup.

On Mondays and Friday nights we can deliver to CBD or closer to Karalee than CBD for 3day or weekly hires. $40 per bike for delivery, $40 per bike for pickup.

* these are based on delivering on a fixed schedule so we can take multiple bikes in 1 trip and work around our family and day job commitments. Requests for any other times will cost $$$ as it means about 3 hours labour plus vehicle costs for individual deliveries.

* we may extend to a Gold Coast run in the future. Working on price and schedule depending on how the Brisbane runs work out.

* if you are a learner, we will need your supervisor to sign the agreement to be responsible that you won't ride unsupervised as per our usual learner hires.

* if these costs are too high for you, we still offer courtesy pickup at Dinmore railway station, or leave your vehicle with us to save getting a lift.

We are hoping this helps more riders get out there for some Time on Bikes

7 Years of Time on Bikes!!!

This week "Time on Bikes" had its 7th birthday.. renting to thousands of people to help them get "Time on Bikes" as learners, tourists, returning riders, or some just wanting an occasional weekend of fun.

It's been a massive journey for us - seeing great joy in those building confidence, and some challenging moments that make us question our path as small business owners.

The photos show our initial fleet at our original Brassall shed (where Gary's Marine Centre are now), and early photos of our current Karalee shed. Many of these bikes have now gone and been replaced by fresher ones.. most of which will be leaving us this year as we renew our fleet again.

We have "tag teamed" our employment journey along the way.. with Brooke initially working casual... then Brooke took a full time job while Alison ran Time on Bikes.. and now we are both working part time day jobs with our weekend Time on Bikes together.

This year we'll be looking to start some regular delivery runs with the truck we bought last year to allow easier access to more customers... more about that later. We'll also have to increase some of our prices as newer bikes come in due to their higher purchase price. The pre-2021 bikes will stay at our existing prices which have been stable since 2016.

We'd welcome any comments here if we have helped you along in your motorcycling journey.. and maybe where you have taken it since.

Hopefully the next 7 years will bring great fun, joy and blessings with safe, relaxing riding and heaps of Time on Bikes.

Cheers, Brooke and Alison 0419 791 186
