Most modern cars use a suspension system called a 'MacPherson strut' system, as pictured below.
When the MacPherson strut suspension system in a car starts to wear out or becomes damaged, it can exhibit several symptoms indicating potential issues. Here are some common symptoms of worn MacPherson struts:

Excessive Bouncing: One of the noticeable signs of worn MacPherson struts is excessive bouncing or a "bouncy" ride. When the struts lose their damping capability, they no longer effectively control the up-and-down movement of the vehicle, causing it to bounce excessively over bumps or uneven surfaces.

Poor Ride Quality: Damaged or worn MacPherson struts can lead to a noticeable decrease in ride comfort. You may experience a harsher, rougher ride, with increased vibrations and a greater impact felt from road imperfections.

Uneven Tire Wear: If the MacPherson struts are no longer properly supporting the vehicle, it can result in uneven tire wear. Excessive or uneven tire wear patterns, such as cupping or feathering, can indicate that the struts are not maintaining proper wheel alignment or providing consistent suspension support.

Nose Diving or Rear Squatting: When braking or accelerating, a worn MacPherson strut may cause the vehicle's front end to dive forward excessively during braking or the rear end to squat down during acceleration. This can affect vehicle stability and handling, compromising control.

Increased Body Roll: As the MacPherson struts lose their ability to provide proper damping and control, you may notice increased body roll or sway when cornering or maneuvering. The vehicle may feel less stable and more prone to leaning or rolling excessively.

Knocking or Clunking Noises: Worn-out or damaged MacPherson struts can produce knocking or clunking noises, especially when driving over bumps or rough surfaces. These noises may indicate loose or worn strut components, such as mounts or bushings.
