Karen Wheatland Photographer. Firstly, I would like to let you know that most people call me Kaz. A very successful re-inventor you could say. Kaz X
I love being creative and I especially love getting behind a lens to capture what I see through my own eyes. I have had a career at sea of over 20 years and have travelled the coast of Australia on merchant ships, fishing boats and pearling vessels. I have worked under the water as a pearl diver, on boats as a captain, engineer, cook, and deckhand. I have worked in State and Federal Government, se

Super excited about this years WALGA breakfast and our keynote speakers! Layne Beachley AO and Kirk Pengelly , (INXS). A pair of Australian legends and from the sporting and music industry. Music and surfing have been in my life since I was a kid growing up in Geraldton and my earliest memories are filled with music and the beach....
I was only 12 when INXS played at the Wintersun Hotel in the City of Greater Geraldton in 1981. It drove me crazy at my mums pronunciation of the bands name, announcing 'incs' when the posters first started appearing. I was also mad that I was not able to attend the gig, and my brother could!! The music of INXS was our soundtrack from the start and often spent days at the beach, playing their music at the end of the day in our stereo cassette machines as we had no walkman's back then.
Layne Beachley AO smashed the gender stereotype and created an army of young girls and women following her. Growing up girls just didn't surf, although we tried grovelling in the white wash! Layne paved a path and became, not only a role model, but an absolute champion of the sport. I was slightly before her time so I blame my age for not becoming a surfing machine, (hahaha).
I am super proud to reflect on my bestie, Shaun Glass (Glassy), for her tenacity and passion for surfing, which is like the blood that flows through her veins. Layne has always been an idol of Glassy's, fast froward to today where Glassy has created an army of girl surfers through her business - A Glassy Day Surf Coaching in Geraldton. A clear example of Layne's impact of being a role model has had on women and the sport.
I can honestly say that both of them have created many threads in the fabric of who I am today and I am looking forward to being present at this breakfast and listening o their stories. Kudos to Nick Sloan and WA Local Government Association (WALGA) on landing this talent. I am super stoked!!
This is a drone shot of Glassys surf school at back beach. Have you booked a lesson yet? Do it - it's awesome! Can't wait to go for a grovel at backs in Gero when I head up in a few weeks! Get amongst it!! Follow the link in the comments to purchase a print!
Starting out my career as a merchant seafarer, at the onset of the Patricks dispute in 1997 impacted me greatly. I was in the last industry sponsored group of Australian Seafarer Trainee's, becoming a part of history.
Unbeknownst to our group we were to embark on our training onto our ships at one of the most dramatic moments in Australian industrial history. The waterfront dispute, better known as the Patrick's dispute.
Years after this, as I ventured into motherhood, I turned to union activism, educated through the dispute, and forged ahead advocating for workers and also to raise the voice for women. It was then that I met Mich-Elle Myers, a Patricks stevedore, the first woman. An active delegate who was in the negotiating team for the EBA, dedicated to her job and for workers rights.
My first impression of Mich-Elle was strong. I remembered being very impressed at this young woman, fighting alongside men to keep the conditions for stevedores during the years after the Patricks dispute. That moment still stands out to me, a formidable union activist, not afraid to take a stand.
Fast forward to this image. Taken in January this year. Some 25 years later and she sits as one of the Maritime Unions of Australia's Assistant National Secretary's, the very first woman to be elected to this role. This is not the only role she holds but one that she holds in her heart and soul strongly. Its a part of her fabric, her identity.
Bravo Mich-Elle. I am proud to be your sister, your comrade. Keep fighting the fight and inspiring others to follow your lead!!

As I look back today it blows me away - when I remember some of the roles that I have held whilst at Sea.
Being in the Merchant Navy is definitely one of the best parts of my career at sea!! It was a huge part of my life and really shaped who I am today.
I spent years steaming around the Australian coastline, in and out of ports. Carting Sugar, gypsum, heavy diesel, aviation gas, mud, potable water, and many other products.
It wasn't easy being one of the few women in the industry back then. I faced plenty of challenges, but I also found a lot of strength and determination I didn't know I had. The experiences taught me so much about teamwork, leadership, and resilience.
Iβll never forget the comradery that was forged on those voyages, the excitement of the open sea, and how every new day brought a new lesson.
As a seafarer it taught me to embrace change, adapt quickly, and stay strong no matter what.
Now, I carry those lessons with me in everything I do. The Merchant Navy wasn't just a job; it was a life-changing adventure that helped make me who I am today.

Today on this WA Day weekend I wish to celebrate a true champion of the netball community. A tribute to Liz Booth.
Liz Booth left the world on Saturday 1st June surrounded by her loving family and friends sending ripples throughout the Netball community not only in WA but throughout Australia.
The Netball WA Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships are played out every June long weekend in Perth. Where Netball Associations from all over WA and International come to Perth and compete.
When I first became involved in it, the champs were played at Wanneroo Districts Netball Association - WDNA, evolving to this day to the Perth Netball Association - Inc. It takes a year of planning from trials, to shortlisting, to squads, to teams, to mini competitions, to the Champs. It takes dedication from players, parents, umpires, coaches, assistant coaches, managers, development officers, player coordinators, Association executive, all the way to the top.
Which is where Liz was. An inspirational leader. For decades Liz oversaw the sport she loved. Leading the development pathways, the grass roots sport and championing the sport of Netball.
My connection to Liz is no where near as deep as many that surrounded her, but I will always remember the impact and the presence she held in my life.
I can still hear your voice say to me, with a cheeky grin and a twinkle in her eye,
'Hello Karen Wheatland. What are you up to now? What are you working on in the background?'
Liz Booth. You will forever be Netball.
The Champs will always be your weekend.
Netball in Western Australia is Liz Booth. It was touching to see teams wearing a black armband in your honour yesterday. Youβre already missed and will be forever.
Rest well legend and help us weave some magic to help us get Netball some huge wins through infrastructure and funding wins into the future.
At peace now.
Vale Liz. π π€ π

I am so blessed to have grown up in the coastal City of Greater Geraldton.
With the Indian Ocean as my neighbour, my best friend.
Whilst I did not grow up on the Abrolhos Islands, I have spent my share of time working and living there.

There is value in supporting young women in the pursuit of their dreams. I have sponsored this amazing young woman for many years in her netball pathway and will continue to do so. .eastaugh is an incredible athlete and even more so a beautiful soul. She is fierce on the court as a shooter and I loved watching the impact she had on the game with the last night!
I have been busy upgrading my website and getting my products and services catalogue together.
This is the start of it.
Love to know what you think!

It was a privilege to shoot the wedding of Ginger & Cherie recently in Broome.
It was, without a doubt, a Broome 'Royal' wedding.
The love and respect that flowed from the bride and groom made it easy to capture so many special moments.
I'd like to share this photo with you of Mr & Mrs Hezo, at Streeters jetty in Broome.
I was blown away when I read Dianne Ryder OAM's Inductee statement.
Di was a former Australian Army Non-Commissioned Officer. She joined the Australian Army in 1974, when there were few Aboriginal soldiers, and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant by 1995. Ahhhmazing!
A respected Nyoongar elder, Di volunteers for various health, education, and cultural programs, making a positive impact on many lives. A lifetime of dedication to serving her community and promoting reconciliation.
She has been recognised by the Australian Army, the City of Swan, and the National NAIDOC committees for her unparalleled service.
What impressed me even more about Di was her bubbling energy that shone from within, her humbleness and her beautiful smile!
Thank you Dianne Ryder and congratulations!!

The colours of the Kimberley are second to none.
The contrasts, the richness, the culture.
The way the magic waters of the Kimberley shape the landscape is so precious.

During the covid pandemic I put my drone up in a lot of places across Western Australia and will be showcasing these soon in my 'Colours of Covid' photography showcase.
The Western Australian coastline is beautiful. Boasting some of the most rugged and picturesque landscapes in the world. This is a sneak peak into some of the work that will be included in the exhibition.
Images that have been captured from the Kimberley down to Esperance and inland to the Wheatbelt. Details to follow soon.

A Trailblazer!
Flamboyant, confident and powerful are words that spring to mind when I look at this portrait of Jessica Gethin - Conductor. The moment she walked into the studio she commanded attention.
Jessica is used to being the centre of attention as an award winning conductor,
performing internationally with orchestras, ranging from core symphonic works to mainstage ballet, opera, and film score. Jessica is Principal Conductor of the West Australian Ballet and Head of Orchestral Studies and Conducting at Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA)
Being inducted into the WA Women's Hall of Fame under the category of Arts, see's Jessica shining a light on women in the arts and particularly in the role of Conductor.
Blazing a trail for women, her advocacy for women has, and will continue to make significant impact on elevating emerging women artists who follow in her path.
Jessica is also an Ambassador for Perth Symphony Orchestras Women on the Podium initiative. What an incredible role model!!

I was one of the WA Women's Hall of Fame champions this year and was proud to promote the inclusion of a new category under the STEM umbrella, named technical and trades.
Enter Master Mariner Carole Dooley. Becoming the first female international shipmaster inducted into the Hall of Fame. Creating a role model for other girls and young women to aspire to. Women can go to sea, drive ships, tugs, pilot boats, captain tankers and many other vessels!! They can work on deck, fix engines, drive cranes!!
Carole Dooley has had the courage to go where other women had not previously ventured in the male dominated maritime industry and succeeded as a Foreign-Going Unlimited Ship Master, Pilot, and Marine Manager.
A woman after my own heart, it gives me great pleasure and privilege to share her achievement with you all!
I give her a hearty At-ay Captain!!
