Vietnam Villages

In a temple on the outskirts of a small town there is an elderly musician. He lives on the compound and when not being involved in the numerous Buddhists ceremonies he will often entertain the tourist that wonder in here.

Images taken March 2024 during our photographic workshop here. The next workshop will be in September 2024.

Vietnam Villages Photographic Workshop
March & September 2024

On the last official day of our March workshop, we get up around 4am to get to the local fish market.
The boats are still coming in after a night's fishing and the venders at the market are engulfed in a frenzy of activity.
They are very busy and ignor the presence of a few keen photographers. Every now and then they lift their heads from their frantic work to give us a glimpse of their natural hospitality.

Vietnam Villages Photographic Workshop
2024 March - September

Having stumbled upon these pretty young Mongolian girls from north Vietnam (North of Hanoi) we proceeded to have a fortunate but hasty portrait workshop.

They delighted in the attention, and we rejoiced in our good luck.

But having done around 11 of these Vietnam Workshops I am always expecting these gems to appear regularly.

March 2024 - September 2024

My client Geoff Tanner shows 2 young Mongolian girls the images on the back of his camera.
We had just climbed a small mountain at Mau Caves and when working our way back down the steep slope we came across these pretty young women.
They were delighted that we wanted to photograph them and both Geoff and I proceeded to capitalize on this surprising photographic opportunity.

The one thing I say to my clients on these workshops is that you never know what will be around the next corner.

Mai's family estimate her age as 118 years. That means she has lived through 2 World Wars, the French War, the American War, depressions and several pandemics.

From the invention of the telephone to this high-tech world that engulfs us now.

Her life in this remote mountain location may not have been affected by world affairs but I am sure she has seen and lived through an unimaginable number of dramas, hardships and many of life's simple pleasures.

Look into her face and see.

March 2024

On our last day in Hanoi we came across some young women dressing up for some pics with their brother. They were very excited for us to photograph them in a museum in Hanoi.

On these workshops you never know when an excellent photo opportunity will occur.

On the banks of a river in Hoi an vendors sell lit lantins that tourist float on the river amongst the boats. A young mother and her daughter, also dressed in pink sell these lantins' enthusiastically. I was taken by this beautiful little girls' enthusiasm and with her mother's consent (by buying a lantin) I took this photo.

I am currently seeking 4 keen photographers to join me when I return for another workshop in September.

Central Australia Photographic Workshop
July 2024

During our Central Australia Workshop there will be many opportunities to get some spectacular Astro images.

This image was taken during a scouting trip several years ago.

I know we will get some great images from places like Kings Canyon, MacDonnell Ranges and Uluru.

I can only take a small number of keen photographers on this trip of a lifetime.

Another pic of Mai. She is reported as being 118 years old. Whatever her age, she is a remarkable woman.

She lives in a very humble home on the edge of her village. When my client, Geoff and I arrived with our guide she got up and arranged all our seating.

It is always a pleasure to photograph her.

Our September workshop will be somewhat different, but the photo-ops will be the same.

I waited for such a long time waiting for the right combination to happen. It was funny because I was there so long people started bringing up their children so that they could practice their English with me. It was fun but slightly distracting and I had to keep an eye on my background.

Anyway, this is what my patience gave me, I hope you like it.

Next - September 2024

Having balked at the Incense village tourist location we ventured into the back streets of this village.
Along the way we passed many small cottage industry buildings where locals worked on preparing the incense sticks for market.
They are delightful people who were very happy to oblige our small photographic team.

I can only take 4 people in September. By keeping the number of photographers to this size ensures that we get the best possible photographs.

One of the Villages we visited as part of the Phototourism Workshop was the Incense Village south of Hanoi.

The driver took us to a tourist location which I immediately balked at and took to the streets to find some photo-opps. The children of this village wander safely around the streets. They are very much raised by the community here.

In September I will need to have 4 keen photographers who will be prepared to travel and explore this amazing country.

With a day to spend in Hanoi before catching a flight to Melbourne I am sitting in my Hanoi hotel room looking at some of the images that I have taken over the last few weeks.
This one is a Hmong lady selling fruit at a little market in a remote town on the edge of the Vietnamese and Chinese borders. It is a rugged and mountainous area full of wonderful photographic opportunities.

Back in Hanoi.

My Vietnam Villages Photography Workshop has come to an end.

Tomorrow morning, I will leave Vietnam until the next workshop in September. I will be taking 4 more keen photographers to see and photograph amazing Vietnam.

This image is of the bright red bridge that leads to the iconic temple set on an islet in the Ho Hoan Kiem Lake at the edge of Hanoi's famous Old Quarter.

In Ninh Binh we had to be very patient to be in the right spot at the right time. It seems to have come through.
When we return for our September Workshop the conditions in Vietnam will be very different.
I only take up to 4 people so hopefully we can achieve a good result again later this year.

One of those odd moments when your camera is ready to shoot.

This lady from one of the many ethnic tribes in the northern mountains of Vietnam pulls off a cone hot with a reflective interior. The light catches her in a flash of light.

The two ladies are in deep conversation at the Red Zhoe marketplace in the northwestern mountains of Vietnam.

I am a bit of a fan of rim lighting and saw this as a good opportunity to catch an image using this technique.

I am also considering how it would look in black and white?

Vietnam Villages

On the first night of our Vietnam Villages Workshop we visit the famous flower market in Hanoi. It is crazy busy and the vendors work frantically to sell their flowers.

It is filled with colour and activity.

22/03/2024

On the way back down after our strenuous climb we by chance encounted two lovely girls in traditional costumes.
The girls belong to an ethnic group from the north that comes from the Mongolian people many centuries ago.

On all the photography workshops I have done in Vietnam it is the first time I have come across these beautifully dressed people.
