I’ll be competing in the annual Footscray Cycling Club Tour this weekend. This will consist of two mass start road stages and a short time trial.
After coming last in the 2023 event (my first ever stage race finish), I wanted an advantage. The individual time, where no-one can sit in your wake, is the obvious place to achieve this and reducing air resistance one sure way to do this.
A mate gave me some clip on aero handlebars a while ago, so I fitted them to my Fuji Transonic road bike.
Making them help me, as opposed to getting in my, was the challenge. After much adjustment, I had the bars in a position where they put my upper body in a streamlined position and allowed me the push against the bars.
Under the right conditions (fairly straight, smooth road), well set up aero bars provide a significant speed advantage. In other conditions (tight corners & bumps), they’re best avoided
I’m taking a welding course at Sunshine TAFE one night a week. This means riding 35km there carrying a lot of equipment.
At first, I did this on my Fuji Gran Fondo road bike, with my favourite 24 litre Ortlieb backpack. This is quite hard on my shoulders.
How about a rack and panniers? My excellent Ritchey Ultra MTB doesn’t have rack mounts (as do many high MTBs now).
Enter the NZ designed Aeroe Spider Pannier Rack! This fits bikes without rack mounts and is adjustable to accommodate many frame variations, including dual suspension.
It’s really well made and much more robust than its minimalist appearance would suggest.
I check se the pannier carrying version because I already owned superb Ortlieb panniers. There is also the Aeroe Spider Rear Rack, designed to carry a dry/kit/sausage bag.
I rode to Sunshine last night in comfort. The bike handled as a touring bike should, turning safely and predictably but not as abruptly as when unladen

After YEARS of waiting, and set back after set back Yarra Ranges Council has officially confirmed that World Trail will commence construction of the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination in mid-June!
Our last update on the project was back in December, you can read more here.

I posted about this at least a year ago but it's still a serious issue.
The south end of Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, descending from Tremont towards Ferntree Gully, has several dangerous bumps in it.
The top layer is a uniform colour and this conceals the depressions in the road. At mountain descending speed, these are invisible and enough to throw the unwary off their bikes
My faith in humanity went down then up again abruptly last Sunday.
I met a friend for lunch in the city, parking in St Kilda Rd and riding my Ritchey Ultra MTB to the Victoria Market. I locked my bike and helmet to a parking loop with a medium sized cable lock. This was all I had with me and it made me uneasy.
When I returned from a delicious lunch, the lock had been cut, but the bike was still there!
" Is that your bike?", asked a voice behind me.
He had been parking his motor scooter nearby and saw 3 adolescent boys approach my bike and cut the lock. He chased them off but they took my white Fox helmet.
He then waited quite a while for me to return, so no-one else made off with the bike!
I didn't get his name, but my deepest gratitude to the Italian bloke on the red motor scooter who prevented what would have been a devastating loss!
As a friend said many years ago after has favourite bike was stolen, that this made him think about the immense effort and we put into customising and maintaining our bikes.
Bikes are such personal things and the loss is more than their cash value

The greatest club in the world is holding on of it most spectacular races around the block containing Williamstown High School.
Many competitors pull out something special for this race. My favourite performance was Matthew Heath’s win in a solo breakaway several years ago. I was transfixed and barely able to watch, simultaneously, as he took every corner on the point of sliding out
Anzac day is fast approaching! Come join us as we race in honour of Bob Robson on the streets of Williamstown. BBQ provided afterwards at the bowls club.

I don’t want to sound like your mother, but…..maybe guards keeps you and your bike clean when riding on wet roads.
I recently bought myself this Fuji a gram Fondo 1.3 to train and commute on and to serve as a customer demonstrator. It has exceptional tyre clearance and hidden mounts for mudguards. Very few carbon framesets have this.
Inspired by the recent rain, I fitted a pair of BBB Slim Guard mudguards this week

New bike day: my new Fuji Gran Fondo 1.3 . While continuing to race my magnificent Fuji Transonic, I’m going to use the Gran Fondo as a demonstrator, to commute, train on and, with Schwalbe cyclocross tyres, in Footscray Cycling Club’s annual gravel race.
The gunmetal colour, Selle Italia seat and bar tape, wider tyres and wider spread of gear ratios are among the improvements for this year.
Available for sale in all sizes
This is particularly import when riding the trails along the Yarra River
As the days become warm, brown snakes start to emerge to bask in the sun or search for food. If you see a snake, keep calm, and move yourself and anyone with you away from that area.
Warn one of the Marshalls or one of our event organisers/crew as soon as you can. Do not attempt to move the snake away yourself even though it may be just sitting in the sun or just trying to move along.
If you leave them alone, they will leave you alone.
For emergencies, there will also be paramedics onsite present on both days.

I’m closing the shop at 11 this morning to go racing with the greatest club in the world.
Today’s race commemorates the late Harry Jones, a much loved club volunteer. He was one of several old timers who welcomed and encouraged me when I first joined the club in the 90s.
Earlier this year, we hed the Hughie Cram Memorial Race. Hughie was a top professional rider in the 50s and 60s. He is in the big old photos at the front of the shop counter
