RESTORE - Why This Trial 03/05/2023

Cognitive Functional Therapy is a landmark trial that has recently been published in the Lancet. It demonstrated significant outcomes for patients in decreased pain and improved function over 3 months and at 12 months. The key messages are that back pain is a biopsychosocial pheonomenon, and patients may need a health coach to help them navigate their pain journey and get back to doing the things they enjoy doing. Is coffee good for our cardiovascular health? 27/09/2022

New UK biobank study involving over 400,000 people concludes coffee is beneficial. Decaffeinated, ground, and instant coffee, particularly at 2–3 cups/day, were associated with significant reductions in incident CVD and mortality. Ground and instant but not decaffeinated coffee was associated with reduced arrhythmia.

Is coffee good for our cardiovascular health? There is some new research which looks at the effects of coffee on our cardiovascular health, as well as all cause mortality. And the findings may surprise you. Despite what you may have been told in the past, much of the intuitive advice on caffeinated drinks may have been ill founded. After all, w...

Is there a relationship between steps per day and risk of dementia? 08/09/2022

Is 112 the new 10000? In this study, 1) brisk walking at 112 steps per minute reduced dementia risk by 62% 2) 3800 steps/day decreased risk by 25% and 9800 steps/day by 50%. Beyond 9826 steps per day, there was an uptick in the rate of dementia. Perhaps a lower step count and an increased rate count is healthier for preventing dementia?

Is there a relationship between steps per day and risk of dementia? We have all heard the saying, "10000 steps per day," is a key to our health goals. However, where does that number come from? And is more or less walking better? What about the rate? A new study in the journal JAMA has looked at a very large sample of UK residents and found some interesting associat...

Association of Leisure Time Physical Activity Types and Risk of Mortality 30/08/2022

Are different types of leisure time physical activity differentially associated with mortality risks among older adults?

Findings This cohort study of 272 550 older adults found that participation in 7.5 to less than 15 metabolic equivalent hours per week of running, cycling, swimming, other aerobic exercise, racquet sports, golf, and walking for exercise was associated with lower mortality risks compared with nonparticipants, although there were differences between risk estimates.

Meaning This study suggests that being physically active through participation in any type of leisure time activity is associated with lower mortality risks for older adults. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2795598?s=09

Why leisure-time activity and work-time activity are not the same 30/08/2022

Why leisure-time physical activity and occupational activity are not the same.

Why leisure-time activity and work-time activity are not the same In the modern world there are many complexities. Life can keep us so busy that we lose track of important health priorities. Running Footwear: what you need to know 23/08/2022

Running Footwear: what you need to know Running footwear is a huge business. Never forget it is a business. Running shoes for preventing lower-limb running injuries in adults 23/08/2022

Are you a runner? There is a new, high quality review looking at lower limb injuries and footwear. Do they prevent injuries? Probably not...the best advice is to run in what is most comfortable to you, and to note that prescribing running shoes on foot type probably doesn't prevent injuries. The results: "Most evidence demonstrates no reduction in lower-limb running injuries in adults when comparing different types of running shoes. Overall, the certainty of the evidence determining whether different types of running shoes influence running injury rates was very low to low, and as such we are uncertain as to the true effects of different types of running shoes upon injury rates.

There is no evidence that prescribing footwear based on foot type reduces running-related lower-limb injures in adults. The evidence for this comparison was rated as moderate and as such we can have more certainty when interpreting these findings. However, all three trials included in this comparison used military populations and as such the findings may differ in recreational runners.

Future researchers should develop a consensus definition of running shoe design to help standardise classification. The definition of a running injury should also be used consistently and confirmed via health practitioners. More researchers should consider a RCT design to increase the evidence in this area. Lastly, future work should look to explore the influence of different types or running shoes upon injury rates in specific subgroups."

‘Good’ posture doesn’t prevent back pain, and ‘bad’ posture doesn’t cause it | Peter O'Sullivan, Leon Straker and Nic Saraceni for The Conversation 19/08/2022

Posture is not as big of a component of back pain as many people think, and certainly not as important as: feeling stressed
experiencing low mood
tired or fatigued
sleeping poorly
being less active

Some things that we know help with back pain include:
moving and relaxing your back
engaging in regular physical activity of your preference
building confidence and keeping fit and strong for usual daily tasks
maintaining healthy sleep habits and body weight
caring for your general physical and mental health
