Paramotor worlds wrap up.

So the First paramotor endurance world champs is done and dusted.
I really like the idea of this event as I thought I had a strong chance at doing really well. Having never been to the UK I wasn’t sure of what the country would be like for flying other than the weather is fickle, how hard can it be. Well….
Going into this event I didn’t have much time to train any kind of navigation due to other commitments. I did feel under prepared and did consider pulling out but that would be letting down the team who were counting on me to help them along being their first comp.
Anyway we went early to get some training in over there as that would be more valuable than at home. Unfortunately the weather had other ideas and we only got one practice day in flying prior to the start of the comp.

Things I liked about the comp.

I like the nav tasks particularly the estimated speed tasks.
I felt like the choice of equipment for this comp was top notch with the Parajet Maverick and the EFI Moster paired with the Niviuk Kougar 3 18m gave me a significant advantage in terms of speed and efficiency over almost everyone else at the comp bar the other EFI machine however I have about 10km/h higher top speed. I feel like I utilized this by flying every available minute there was and at top speed where possible to maximize available points. It’s just a shame wasn’t more accurate to really make it count.

We had a great team I really enjoy helping the guys learn how all the comp strategies work and what is really important like not flying into no fly zones and avoiding penalties. Everyone learnt an extraordinary amount during their time at this event and it was great to see how hungry they were to learn more and compete in the future! 🥳 it was alto really great to catch up with people who I had met many years ago at comps and making new friends at this event. It is a small community and they are a great bunch of people.
Travel this the engine was the least stressful I have ever experienced I will certainly fly china eastern again!

Things I didn’t like.
Being under prepared prior to the comp.
Not knowing there was a comp at this venue 2 months prior to this event. It would have been invaluable training to get to know the area for this event. Publicity is not the best for paramotor events and not having an Australian NAC representative for FAI so we are kept informed of what’s happening in the future is not great. I will be putting my hand up to take on this roll.
It is frustrating not performing to the level I know I am capable of but it was a good learning experience and I have a lot of things to take away from this event and I plan on doing much better at the next event in France next year.
The French open in end of May 2025 followed by the worlds in August at the same venue. This is a classic comp similar to this one except all pilots fly the same task at the same time.
Who wants to go to France?!🇫🇷

As a nation we finished 7th of 14
I finished 9th overall
Ross 36th
Dan 37th
Telfer 44th
Tony 48th

Worlds update.
Sorry for the delay. It’s been a rollercoaster of an event.
The last few days have been bad weather. We flew another navigation task with 2.5 hrs flight time and a flight window between 5am and 10am. With winds increasing to around 25km/h as the morning goes on it was Importnat to get away early in order to take advantage of lighter winds on the outward leg and use the wind to get home again.
That would have worked well if I didn’t break my map board mount after takeoff….. this meant I had to do a circuit which meant my time started and lost 3 minutes crossing the start gate to avoid the no fly zone and cross the finish gate to stop the clock.
I returned to the deck and got the spare parts from tony on the team who had the same mount ran back out to the field and then realize I had drilled the holes out on mine to bolt it on. So ran to the Vittorazi tech to borrow a drill. Got it drilled out ran back fitted it and moved onto the deck.
Obviously rushing as I’m now way behind schedule. I didn’t kite my wing and just did a forward launch and had help spreading my wing. Launched good and now I’m getting pulled right like crazy! Look up I’ve got a tension knot in my right D lines🤦‍♂️ unable to clear it I had to turn and return to the deck again! No so gracefully this time as I had no flare authority on the right due to the knot. I’m also super heavy with 17ltrs fuel on board. I cleared the knot and took off again. Talk about a crazy start…. Anyway I’m off flying full speed to cover as much ground as possible in the time available. My plan was I tag a couple turn points on the was to complete the last task which was a snake in the far corner on the map. I got there and completed the task ahead of time but then realized my fuel burn was much higher at that speed so I had a slow down on the more down wind legs in order to conserve fuel. Now it was a race to take more higher value turn points on the way home and return before the time ran out. I tagged an extra point which made it very tight returning home which meant it was full speed again and hosing fuel to do it. Hoping the computer was a little conservative on its figures and just gave it the beans and hoped. I crossed the finish line with about 200mm of fuel left and less than a minute spare. And covered 170km.

I’m currently in 9th place over all after making a couple of mistakes that cost me approx 1400 points. Getting lost on a precision task and missing a couple time gates due to being high so I didn’t get lost I was less accurate. Lessons learned.
Today we are fueling for an eco task if the winds allow. Fingers crossed for another task. I might make a couple places if I don’t make any mistakes but it could be all over with the weather forecast.
It’s been a great event and I’ve learn so much. The team is currently sitting in 7th out of 14 nations with the team all learning a lot. I looks forward to the next comp already!
I’ll keep you posted after today 🤞🙌

05/08/2024

Day 1 saw light winds most of the day which allowed us to have a flight window from 7am to 4pm and available air time window of 5hrs from the start line to finish line.
We have all the nav tasks available to complete and it’s the pilots choice to complete which one they like and when.

As it was light winds I opted to complete the times tasks to take advantage of the light winds in order to be more accurate with estimated times.
This plan would have gone great if I didn’t get lost on my second task on the 3rd leg 😅 I found my way again and continued to complete the rest of the timed tasks which ended close to the air field so I returned for fuel and had 1:10min left which was enough for a 60km snake task close to the field. The winds were a little stronger which took longer than expected, I was planning to have 10min to return to the field but ended up with 5 min once I finished the task, fortunately the thermals has mellowed by this point and allowed me to push full speed and cross the line with 1 min spare.

Day 2 We had a bowling landing with wheelbase first to take advantage of the lighter winds but by the time that was completed the wind was too strong for the foot launch and was cancelled.

We have now emptied our machines and run them dry ready for a pure economy task this afternoon. Figured crossed the thermals will be nice and strong to stay up easily. 🤞
Sorry for the long video and bad audio.

We have been in the UK for a week now on the lead up to the worlds, the weather has been very hot and a lot of wind. The last couple of days has seen lighter winds and a bit more cloud and thermal activity which allowed up to explore some of the area we are going to be flying.
The area is huge! Approx 80 square KM. I’ve flown almost half got lost a at least once per flight for a short time so it’s going to be interesting once the comps starts.
We had a time and distance task today which fried my brain doing all the calcs but flew ok but certainly room for improvement and finished the day with a spot landing task and scored a bullseye.
These are just practice tasks to test all the systems are working for the scoring.
Tomorrow is opening ceremony and planning. The first flying day should be Monday with light winds we should get some good tasks in.

Ground handling is one of the most important aspect of our sport. The better you get at it the safer you will be. This also help to reduce stress on launch which then allows you to make better decisions once in the air.
We focus a lot of time to honing these skills and it really pays off! All the students are doing exceptionally well with favourable coastal breezes so you don’t have to run around in the heat and really get a chance to feel what’s going on.
It’s very rewarding to see everyone progressing so well.
Let’s get our knees in the breeze!🪂🪂🪂👏👏👏
