TAFE Queensland
TAFE Queensland is proud to be Queensland's largest, most experienced training provider.
Elli's passion for customer service led her to study hospitality management at TAFE Queensland.
Her studies honed her skills and earned her a Front of House Attendant job at Queensland Parliament. Along the way, she won state and national WorldSkills Australia titles for restaurant service.
Elli is now gearing up to represent Australia on the world stage at the 2024 WorldSkills International Competition in Lyon, France.
One of her biggest supporters is her dad, Stewart McRae, who has been with her every step of the way and was with Elli to witness her win gold at the WorldSkills Australia National Championships in 2023, alongside Elli's grandmother Elizabeth McRae.
“Watching Elli put in the hours, perfect her craft, and see her hard work pay off is inspiring. I’m beyond proud of her journey from studying at TAFE Queensland to now representing Australia - she is carving her own path, literally.”
This Father's Day, we celebrate dads like Stewart who support and help their kids to chase their dreams. We’re proud to be a part of our students' journeys, providing the practical education they need for success.
From helping in the family restaurant to representing Australia on the global stage, Abbey Kuhnell’s journey to becoming a chef began with her biggest inspiration—her father.
Lee Kuhnell, Head Chef at House of Gabriel Riverside Restaurant, which he owns with his wife and Abbey’s mum Joanne, shared his passion for cooking with Abbey when she was just ten years old, sparking her love for the kitchen.
Following in his footsteps, Abbey joined The Star Culinary Institute apprenticeship and completed training blocks with TAFE Queensland while helping out at the family restaurant on weekends.
Since finishing her apprenticeship, Abbey has relocated to tropical north Queensland and has taken a chef position at Townsville's highly-regarded Shaw & Co steak restaurant.
Every dish Abbey creates reflects the love for cooking she learned from her dad. Later this month, she will represent Australia in the Culinary Arts category at the 47th WorldSkills International Competition in Lyon, France, competing against chefs from 44 other countries.
This Father's Day, we thank all the dads like Lee who inspire and support their children’s dreams. We’re proud to play a part in each of our student's journeys by providing practical education that equips them for success.

It’s National Skills Week – a week to celebrate the benefits of Vocational Education and Training and our amazing students and graduates.
While in high school, Sari Conte was focused on getting a high Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score, going to university and becoming a doctor or lawyer.
However, six months into studying fashion through TAFE at School, Sari knew her future was in fashion and decided to leave school early and earn her fashion diploma full-time.
Sari’s passion quickly turned into potential, and she was encouraged to sharpen her design and technical fashion skills for WorldSkills by training with TAFE Queensland teacher and WorldSkills Australia expert, Carol Costa.
After winning Gold at WorldSkills Nationals, Sari will now showcase her skills at the WorldSkills International Competition in France this September, representing Australia in Fashion Technology.
The 2024 World Competition sees 1500 competitors from more than 65 countries compete in Lyon at the 47th WorldSkills International Competition in Lyon, France.
Sari will test her advanced technical and creative skills against competitors from 26 other countries and hopefully stitch up another gold medal. Go, Sari!

This National Skills Week we're profiling our amazing Skillaroos, like Cookery Apprentice, Abbey Kuhnell.
Abbey's passion for cooking was ignited when she helped her father in the kitchen of her family’s restaurant and discovered the magic of how food brings people together.
Her cookery journey began when she joined The Star Culinary Institute apprenticeship program, getting on-the-job training and opportunities at The Star Gold Coast while completing block training with TAFE Queensland.
Her teachers quickly recognised her potential and encouraged her to compete in WorldSkills Australia competitions, which saw her win both Queensland and National gold medals.
This September, she’s set to turn up the heat at the WorldSkills International Competition in Lyon, France, representing Australia in Culinary Arts.
She’s thrilled to sharpen her knives and represent Australia against 44 other countries in the Cookery Category on the global stage. Let’s cheer her on!
The 2024 World Competition will see Abbey join 1500 competitors from more than 65 countries to compete against each other at the 47th WorldSkills International Competition in Lyon, France.

Lucia Ramirez came to TAFE Queensland to turn her passion for people into a career in tourism through our TAFE in School program, and now she’s applying her skills in luxury hotel management. 👩💼
Our TAFE at School Program allows Year 11 and 12 students to complete a TAFE course while still in high school, gaining qualification and credit points towards their QCE, all while completing their senior studies. 📚
The former Cannon Hill Anglican College student studied with us one day per week, gaining practical experience under the guidance of teachers from industry, readying her for work in an industry she’s passionate about. 🙌
After graduating with a Certificate II in Tourism (SIT20122) at 17 years old, she began working in the industry almost immediately at the boutique hotel, The Inchcolm, before recently moving to The Calile Hotel. 🏨
Lucia credits the hands-on practical training she received from her teachers for giving her the skills to work with people, greet guests, check them in and out, support events, manage complaints and operate in high-stress situations – all essential for the hotel and tourism industry. 🎓
Lucia proves that our TAFE at School Program is a fantastic learning path for high school students to get practical skills that prepare them for the workforce and further study. 👏
