PLANT FEATURE: CHEN PI (BITTER ORANGE)

We’re deep in citrus medicine at the moment! So we though we would dive into a potent traditional Chinese citrus remedy, bitter orange aka Chen Pi.

Bitter Orange peel has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries, and is perhaps one of the most reliable remedies for supporting digestion

The thing with Bitter Orange peel is that it merges the flavour-poles of bitter, and sweet - which means it is great for any constitution and condition.

Its bitterness means it has an action on the secretions of the organs of the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the liver (remember, bitter things help the liver to release bile!).

This means that the liver more efficiently secretes bile, and the stomach more efficiently secretes acids so that any stagnation is released, particularly in the upper digestive tract. Symptoms like colic, painful digestion, gas and nausea are good indications Bitter Orange is needed.

The second place where Bitter Orange really shines is in the nervous system, and that is due to its sweetness, and its essential oil component.

Along with the tonifying and mood-lifting effects of the sweet flavour in general, Bitter Orange is the source of the well known Bergamot essential oil, which is fundamentally relaxing. In fact, Bergamot essential oil not only relaxes tension, but acts specifically as an antidepressant.

Is the heart actually a pump?

Did you know that the idea of the heart as the sole mechanism that pumps the blood through out the body is currently being challenged?

In fact, the heart is so much more beautiful and fascinating than we ever could have imagined!

“Modern analysis of the heart has shown that in spite of the fact that the most powerful ventricle of the heart can shoot water six feet into the air, the amount of pressure actually needed to force the blood through the entire length of the body’s blood vessels would have to be able to lift a one hundred pound weight one mile high” - Stephen Buhner

So how does the blood move around the labyrinth-like vessels of our body?

Well, it seems that blood is able to generate its own momentum!

You see, blood flow is not a simple stream like we once thought.

It is in fact composed of two streams, spiralling around each other much like the image of a DNA double helix, at the centre of which is a vacuum.

“Blood flow through living vessels is much more like a tornado than anything else: Such a vacuum is necessary for producing a vortex” - Stephen Buhner

How cool is that?

This spiral dance is not only found in the bloodstream, but also in the blood cell itself!

Blood cells in fact spin on their own individual axes of rotation. They are smaller spinning cells in a larger spinning vortex.

If your mind is not blown yet, let’s go back to the heart.

The heart itself has recently been discovered not to be a mass of muscle, but rather a ‘helicoidal myocardial band’ that has spiralled in upon itself, creating its unique shape and its separate chambers.

This is called the Helical Heart, and you can see doctors unravel it by searching ‘Helical Heart’ on Youtube.

Pair this with discoveries that the heart functions as an endocrine gland, has its own nervous system that makes and releases its own neurotransmitters, and omits an electromagnetic field that is far stronger than the brain’s, and we begin to move from the idea that the heart is simply a mechanical pump.

It is a spiralling organ of perception.

If that’s not beautiful, we don’t know what is.

It’s not as simple as that though, so I wanted to explain briefly the overlapping relationships between the endocrine, neural and immune systems. They are talking to one another all the time and how one works, effects how they all work. But firstly, it would be incorrect to imply it stops at just these 3 systems. Reality is, the functioning of your whole body relies on the perceptions and communications of every specialised system working together. Digestion. Reproduction. Thinking. It doesn’t even stop at your skin. It continues out into the systems of the community and the whole world. If one fails, it all becomes compromised over time.

BOUNDARIES >> is the biggest theme of the immune system. Energetic. Emotional. Physical. It’s all part of the immune system.

How are your boundaries - Do you over emphasise? Do you feel responsible for things around you to your own detriment? Are you carrying the weight of the world, whilst struggling to carry the weight of your own body? Do other people’s bad moods stick to you and drag you down? This is the immune system of someone very open and vulnerable. Someone letting in a huge amount of the outside world. On the other hand - Do you struggle to emphasise with others’ suffering? Do you struggle to understand other people’s emotions at all unless they verbalise it explicitly? Do you defend yourself often in reaction to events outside of you? This is the immune system of someone very closed off, defending their inner world with thick walls.

The immune system’s role is to protect the inner sanctum from the external world, and to mediate what enters the Temple. This will impact the emotional nervous system of the body as it reacts to external pathogens that have walked right inside through poorly defended gates with stress - histamine, cortisol, and cascades of hormonal reactions - or will not let in important information & emotional connection through its impassable defences. The thing about the endocrine system is that it is a mirror and will mimic the systems it is entrained with aka the people around you. The nervous system does the same. It entrains to calm itself down, or enrage itself up which results in hormones surging about telling the body stories.

Be mindful who you entrain with during times of stress. Women’s oestrogen will steady smoother around other oestrogen dominant systems aka feminine support. Likewise the same with male testosterone. It’s so tempting to dump it all on your opposite s*x partner, but it isn’t helping either of your endocrine, nervous or immune systems to manage the Castle Walls.
