The Rum Rebellion
Q: What do pirates & Australians have in common?
A: They love being girt by sea & indulging in obscene amounts of rum.
So much so, that the only military takeover in Australian government history had to do with - you guessed it - rum.
Picture this, itâs Sydney 1808, a penal colony where money is scarce, public intoxication is rife and people are unsavoury, even the soldiers were wily and often corrupt.
Instead of coins or bank notes, people were almost exclusively paid in goods (most notably rum) of which the good old NSW corps had a monopoly on.
In what is now known as the âRum Rebellionâ, colonial soldiers decided to take it upon themselves to boot out the governor, William Bligh, from his office and take control.
For what was his heinous and clearly âevilâ crimes you might ask? Trying to do what his predecessors could not, which was to crack down on public drunkenness & eradicate the extortionate on-selling of rum from the soldiers onto convicts and lower ranking military officials.
The soldiers, or the ârum corpsâ as they became known, simply couldnât have some one meddling with their shady enterprise. Of course, justice eventually prevailed as this ushered in a new era where politics and alcohol could peacefully co-exist without corruption. Or is that just the rum talking?
A homage to the event of the pastâŚ
The Rum Rebellion:
â˘tropical rum blend
â˘pineapple

The newest addition to the snacks menu:
Meatball subs
Hand rolled meatballs cooked in a rich, house-made San Marzano Napoli sauce, finished with Parmesan, garlic mayonnaise and parsley. Served in artisan buns baked by our good friends at Blanc Bakery in Berwick.
What to drink? Take your pick.
Or ask our knowledgeable staff, who love being able to get creative and choose for you based on your preferences and tastes.
With over 30 cocktails on our list, plus 100âs more in our back pocket - we can find something for you!
Our courthouse home was built in 1884 and is a significant fabric of the heritage of Berwick.
Designed by JT Kelleher, who also designed the Traralgon Post Office, as well as two other identical Post Office/Courthouse buildings in Mortua & Donald, it stands proudly to look over the High Street of Berwick.
When you join us, you are immersing yourself in history.

At Circa 1884, we love cocktails.
We also love the link between literary greats and their love of cocktails, such as Ernst Hemingway & F. Scott Fitzgerald (Hemingway invented the cocktail, âDeath in the Afternoonâ - look it up, if you dare).
We like to think that cocktails were the key to their literary genius. Yet while they dealt purely in fiction, at Circa 1884 we deal only in pure hard (alcohol) facts that will stand up in the court of law.
So today we pay homage to another literary giant, none other than our main man, William âBilly Boyâ Shakespeare, itâs his birthday later this month.
As Shakespeareâs Macbeth once famously said, âCome what mayâ.
So, in honour of that jovial wordsmith (who may or may not have given us a few migraines in year 9 English) - we present to thee:
âKumquat Mayâ
Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin
Kumquat juice
Kumquat syrup
A few sips of this bad boy and youâll be speaking Middle English in no time. Rain, hail or shine, kumquat may.
Come down and join us this Wednesday and/or Thursday before the Easter break. Donât forget to pick up some takeaway cocktails if you canât make it down.
Happy Easter! đ¸

All you have to worry about? Which cocktail to order first.
Cicchetti are small savoury snacks (much akin to the Spanish 'tapas') originating in Venice, Italy. Normally accompanied by a 'shadow' - a small glass of wine - or
'ombra' as it is known in Venetian language. It is quite socially acceptable to ask your friends:
'AndĂŠmo bĂŠver un'ombra'
Meaning, 'Let's go drink a shadow.'
There are two lessons here:
1. The Italians know how to eat & drink well
2. Never be afraid of your own shadow
Salut đŽđš
Our mushroom & truffle arancini.
Arancini derives its name from the Italian word for 'orange' or arancia, due to its resemblance in colour and shape to the citrus when fried.
We hand roll and cook our arancini fresh in our kitchen using the best quality ingredients, so you can be sure that when you dine with us, you're enjoying food of true provenance.
The Adjournment
Bright fruitiness gives way to refreshing acidity of the shrub & verjus, with the boozy kick almost unnoticeable.
If ever a court had to adjourn, this is what weâd like to think theyâd have waiting for them on the other side.
