Heavy Choir

Melbourne's Heavy Choir is the only dedicated choir for people who love singing metal and rock!

25/07/2024

One of the creative thrills we get from putting on our more thematic gigs like Dark Rituals is seeing what costume ideas some of our choir members come up with!

This Saturday's event at Valhalla Brewing & Taproom's Brewhall, and for next week's Goldfields Gothic: Festival of Dark Ideas in Maldon, we're exploring a 'gathering of the Gods' - old world, new world, light and dark. πŸͺ½

Heavy Choir's Melanie, who will also be performing a cover of 'Last Resort (Reimagined)' by Falling in Reverse, shared her costume idea:

'I am going as Atropos, the 3rd of the 3 fates.

✨In Greek mythology, The role of the Moirai (the fates) was to ensure that every being, mortal and divine, lived out their destiny as it was assigned to them by the laws of the universe. For mortals, this destiny spanned their entire lives and was represented as a thread spun from a spindle.
the 3rd and final of the three fates, Atropos chose the manner of death and ended the life of mortals by cutting their thread of life.

I have a spindle of glowing thread attached to my waist and a pair of scissors with which to cut the thread of life.'

(We saw the glowing thread at rehearsal last night - it's awesome!)

Since the fun at The Gaso gig last month, these guys have been learning a well known Machine Head song - probably an unconventional choice for a choral arrangement, but our in-house legend Dee Davidson has woven her magic and made it the perfect closer for our upcoming Dark Rituals II gig... here's a sneak peek at "A Farewell to Arms" 🀘

15/07/2024

We had such a brilliant time at The Gasometer Hotel a couple weeks ago - and what an awesome audience! Massive thank you to everyone who made a serious effort to brave the Melbourne winter on a Sunday night no less, to rock out with us! Because of you legends we rated this as one of our all time favourite gigs!

Next up: we're bringing our occult themed event Dark Rituals II to Geelong's Valhalla Brewing & Taproom on Saturday 27 July and then to Maldon's annual Goldfields Gothic: Festival of Dark Ideas on Saturday 3 August, joining the decadent evening line-up with The Sweet Sickness Band, Death of Art, One Part Gin and more...

We're in the recording studio today at Pony Music in Hallam with Choir Master Alana K Vocal and the legendary Troy Mccosker running a special vocal workshop and recording "Aces High" for our Iron Maiden project!

29/04/2024

Welcome new Choir Master to the Heavy Choir team!!! We are beyond thrilled to announce that Alana officially takes the helm as Choir Master of our northside chapter starting this week! 🀘

Alana brings a wealth of teaching, mentoring and performance experience to our team, but it was her mix of empathy, adaptability and community focus as a leader that made all the difference. (Okay, and the fact she has an oddball sense of humour like our Music Director Dee Davidson probably helped, too).

Not least of all, Alana is a specialist in the metal vocal genre. She's not into name-dropping, so we'll do it for her: bands she has worked with include and to name a few... and has run a vocal workshop . We think this stacks up as pretty awesome cred. (She's already been running harsh vocal workshops for the choir each term).

We're excited to collaborate with Alana as part of our team, and look forward to the combined skills, experience and vision that Alana and Dee can offer our Heavy Choir members on their vocal and performance journey. 🀘

Our big show needed a live band, and we were insanely lucky to have these guys again! But let it also be known, after these guys got together for our first Heavy Choir show last year, they ran away with one of our choir members and formed heavy metal cover bands C - NTACT and Rare Maiden! πŸ˜‚

Throughout the year, these guys gave their time and skill to support the choir, and we are grateful that our singers got to perform with such incredible musicians.

It's not easy to bring the live metal band element to a choir gig. It takes great sound management and, not surprisingly, a theatre style venue to get the best balance of vocals, screaming riffs and well, Con Milo (as long as you keep him behind some perspex!).

A special mention goes to bassist Scottie - who is tasked with coordinating the band, and did a mighty fine job. You got them there on time, and rocked.πŸ€˜πŸ™

Thank you Scottie, Con, John and Ben for rocking out with us Chapel Off Chapel this year!!! 🀘🀘🀘

Heavy Choir - we did it! After months and months of preparation, belief and commitment from our singers and team, we sold out the iconic Chapel Off Chapel and our performers blew the roof off! There's always so much to say in the afterglow of an event, and many people to thank, so a "making of" blog and show footage will follow sharing more of that story. In this moment however, I want to acknowledge the wonderful people who I work with in Heavy Choir to make this happen:

Dee Davidson - our inimitable Music Director & Arranger, and Choir Master of our southside chapter: for creating our beautiful choral arrangements that soar and give our singers the unique opportunity to sing music by bands we love, and supporting each of them to go from strength to strength, no matter their level of skill or confidence.

Theo Bird - our talented Choir Master of the northside chapter: for skillfully and thoughtfully guiding and inducting our new cohort of singers along their choir journey in such a short amount of time, ensuring they feel capable, prepared and encouraged for the challenge ahead. (He sings with them, too!)

I am privileged to work with these two people. They have been instrumental in making everyone in Heavy Choir feel welcome and excited to experience the thrill of singing, and I especially love that they achieve this in very different ways. I have so much respect and gratitude for both of them, and thank them for trusting my vision, for being people-focused, and helping me be better at my job along the way. πŸ™

Never least, at the centre of it all, THANK YOU to all of our singers: you are an incredibly wonderful community to serve and we hope this amazing event experience is etched in your crazy joyful souls forever. You bring joy, inspire purpose, and energise us by being yourselves, giving everything a go, and wearing your heavy metal hearts on your sleeve.

You absolutely rocked. The Heavy Metal Gods heartily accepted your offering last night.

Being a heavy metal choir means part of the fun when performing is getting dressed up! For our big show this Saturday, we've given the choir creative licence with the dress code being "dark glam" - open to whatever these guys want it to be. Some are getting crafty like Christine's "Alice in Chains-inspired" outfit, while others are patching up old and new battle vests (any excuse, really πŸ˜…), and adding studded glam to a tux. There'll be lace, corsets, leather, horns, fishnets, chains, studs and dark robes - and co**se paint, most likely. It's a tribute to all things heavy metal, goth, dark or glam - but ultimately, the freedom to creatively express their individuality!

One week to go till we're on at Chapel Off Chapel!! We had our last session with the band yesterday - and these guys are sounding and looking πŸ‘Œ This week we bring all the final performance elements together: 33 choir singers, the band, sound and lighting design, and 4 incredible dancers - it's a real theatrical heavy metal show for both nostalgic metal fans and the curious!

Also, we don't get to perform with the band a lot (it's a huge undertaking) so get your tickets before they SELL OUT - it's going to be an awesome night! 🀘

Are we born to hold a tune or can we learn it? The science of singing 11/10/2023

It's a common question! Can anyone sing or really learn to? Research finds it's actually an "interplay between nature and nurture" - so even if you didn't exactly inherit musical genes, your environment plays a big role.

So, we'd venture to say that stick around long enough in a choir and you will get better at singing! (Actually, pretty sure that's backed by research too 😏).

Check out the article below, it's a good read, featuring details on the mechanics of the voice and how we make and filter sound (if you're curious!).

Are we born to hold a tune or can we learn it? The science of singing New research sheds light on whether singing talent is a matter of nature or nurture.

"We've come a long way since the very first Heavy Choir meetup where nine metalheads showed up to sing in a community dining room. You could only get to it by going through an op shop on Chapel Street, and this incredibly nice lady, Anne, would open the door every Saturday and let us weirdos in.

After the first Choir Master bowed out on day one (we eventually found our gem, located all the way in Ballarat!), it would take a whole term to learn just one song, endless weeks spent trying to sing online (thanks COVID) and failing to make tech work, then a chaotic and stressful lead up to our first show - it was a ride that offered crucial lessons on how to better lead, teach, and prepare a community choir.

We absolutely stumbled many times along the way to figuring out how exactly to pull this crazy idea off. Finding a way to balance vision with purpose, and real meaning for everyone involved. It's a work in progress, and you must never stop learning.

Most who were with us from day one are still here. And they've been joined by so many others - all similarly misfits in their own way and who just bloody love metal and want a chance to sing with genuinely decent people. Each in their own way has helped grow this choir into a real community.

When I think deeply about "purpose" - the driver beyond the creative stuff and all the thrills of hearing heavy metal being sung communally - it really comes down to "belonging". This resonates with me, and I bet it resonates with a lot of you out there. Creating a sense of belonging for people to be themselves, to feel seen and heard, while being given a safe and real place to explore or (re)discover what it is to sing, is central to Heavy Choir.

We're not a professional choir and we're hardly the biggest community choir out there. Maybe we're the quirkiest, the dark horse, or the one that scares people πŸ˜…. Some think we're just a "cute hobby". Or maybe "heavy metal" and "choir" doesn't make sense. But given how much this whole thing means to people (and, how awesome it sounds!) "heavy metal" and "choir" actually does work.

Heavy metal isn't just a genre: it's a way of life, a way of being and experiencing and relating. It chooses you. You accept. And this union cuts through and reaches deep, just like singing does - because these things are in our bones. They connect us to each other.

Since 2021, Heavy Choir has been uniting metalheads and misfits in harmony regardless of generation, gender or ability.🀘

The takeaway? Don't let anyone stop you from singing what you love.🀘" - Emily, Founder and Creative Director
